The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 « Vanità delle vanità», dice il Predicatore

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

3 V anità delle vanità; tutto è vanità», Che vantaggio ha l'uomo da tutta la sua fatica in cui si affatica sotto il sole?

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

4 U na generazione va, una generazione viene, ma la terra rimane in eterno,

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

5 A nche il sole sorge e poi tramonta, e si affretta verso il luogo da dove sorge di nuovo.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

6 I l vento soffia verso il mezzogiorno, poi gira verso settentrione; gira e rigira continuamente e ritorna a fare gli stessi giri.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

7 T utti i fiumi corrono al mare, ma il mare non si riempie mai; al luogo da cui i fiumi provengono, là essi ritornano nuovamente.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

8 T utte le cose richiedono fatica, piú di quel che l'uomo possa dire, l'occhio non si sazia mai di guardare, né l'orecchio è mai sazio di udire.

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 Q uello che è stato è quel che sarà; quello che è stato fatto è quel che si farà; non c'è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

10 C 'è qualcosa di cui si possa dire: «Guarda, questo è nuovo!»? Quella cosa esisteva già nei secoli che ci hanno preceduto.

Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

11 N on rimane alcun ricordo delle cose passate, e cosí non rimarrà alcun ricordo delle cose che accadranno tra coloro che verranno in seguito.

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

12 I o, il Predicatore, sono stato re d'Israele, in Gerusalemme,

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 e ho applicato il mio cuore a cercare e a investigare con sapienza tutto ciò che si fa sotto il cielo; questa è un'occupazione penosa, che DIO ha dato ai figli degli uomini perché vi si affatichino.

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

14 I o ho visto tutte le cose che si fanno sotto il sole, ed ecco tutto è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

15 C iò che è storto non si può raddrizzare e ciò che manca non si può contare.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

16 I o ho parlato col mio cuore, dicendo: «Ecco, io ho ottenuto grandezza e acquistato maggiore sapienza di tutti quelli che hanno regnato prima di me in Gerusalemme e il mio cuore ha visto molta sapienza e conoscenza».

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

17 E ho applicato il mio cuore a conoscere la sapienza, come pure a conoscere la follia e la stoltezza; e ho compreso che anche questo è un cercare di afferrare il vento.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

18 P oiché dove C'è molta sapienza c'è molto affanno e chi aumenta la conoscenza, aumenta il dolore.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
