A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.

3 A nche quando lo stolto cammina per la strada, il senno gli manca e mostra a tutti che è uno stolto.

Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

4 S e l'ira di un sovrano si accende contro di te, non lasciare il tuo posto, perché la calma placa offese anche gravi.

If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

5 C 'è un male che ho visto sotto il sole, un errore che viene da chi governa:

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

6 l a follia è posta in cariche elevate, mentre i ricchi seggono in luoghi bassi.

folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

7 H o visto servi a cavallo e principi camminare a piedi come servi.

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

8 C hi scava una fossa vi può cadere dentro, e chi demolisce un muro può essere morso da una serpe.

He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

9 C hi sposta delle pietre può esserne ferito, e chi spacca la legna si mette in pericolo.

Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

10 S e la scure è smussata e non se ne affila il taglio, bisogna usare maggior forza, ma la sapienza ha il vantaggio di riuscire sempre.

If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

11 S e il serpente morde perché non è stato incantato, l'incantatore diventa inutile.

Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

12 L e parole della bocca del saggio sono piene di grazia, ma le labbra dello stolto lo distruggono.

The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

13 L 'inizio del suo parlare è stoltezza, e la fine del suo dire è pazzia dannosa.

The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

14 A nche se lo stolto moltiplica le parole, l'uomo non sa che cosa avverrà, chi gli può dire ciò che avverrà dopo di lui?

A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

15 L a fatica dello stolto lo stanca, perché non sa neppure come andare in città.

The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

16 G uai a te, o paese, il cui re è un fanciullo, e i cui principi pranzano fin dal mattino!

Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

17 B eato te, o paese, il cui re è di stirpe nobile, e i cui principi pranzano al tempo giusto, per ristorare le forze e non per ubriacarsi!

Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

18 P er la pigrizia le travi della casa crollano, e per l'inattività delle mani piove in casa.

By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

19 U n banchetto è fatto per divertirsi, e il vino rallegra la vita, ma il denaro viene incontro ad ogni bisogno.

A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.

20 N on maledire il re neppure col pensiero, e non maledire il ricco nella tua camera da letto, perché un uccello del cielo potrebbe portare lontano la tua voce, e un uccello in volo potrebbe riferire la cosa.

Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
