1 « Sono nauseato della mia vita; darò libero sfogo al mio lamento, parlando nell'amarezza dell'anima mia!

My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

2 D irò a Dio: "Non condannarmi! Fammi sapere perché contendi con me.

I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.

3 T i par bene opprimere, disprezzare l'opera delle tue mani e mostrarti favorevole ai disegni dei malvagi?

Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

4 H ai tu occhi di carne, o vedi anche tu come vede l'uomo?

Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?

5 S ono forse i tuoi giorni come i giorni di un mortale, i tuoi anni come i giorni di un uomo?

Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man’s days,

6 p erché tu debba indagare sulla mia colpa e andare in cerca del mio peccato,

that thou enquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?

7 p ur sapendo che non sono colpevole e che non c'è nessuno che mi può liberare dalla tua mano?

Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.

8 L e tue mani mi hanno fatto e plasmato tutt'insieme, ma ora vorresti distruggermi.

Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

9 R icordati, ti prego, che mi hai plasmato come argilla, e che mi farai ritornare in polvere!

Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

10 N on mi hai forse versato come il latte, e fatto coagulare come il formaggio?

Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?

11 T u mi hai rivestito di pelle e di carne, e mi hai intessuto di ossa e di nervi.

Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

12 M i hai concesso vita e benevolenza, e la tua provvidenza ha vegliato sul mio spirito,

Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

13 m a nascondevi queste cose nel tuo cuore; ora so che pensavi questo.

And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.

14 S e pecco, tu mi tieni d'occhio e non mi lasci impunito della mia colpa.

If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.

15 S e sono malvagio, guai a me! Anche se fossi giusto, non oserei alzare il capo, sazio come sono d'ignominia e vedendo la mia miseria.

If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;

16 S e alzo il capo, tu mi dai la caccia come un leone, compiendo nuovamente meraviglie contro di me.

for it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.

17 T u rinnovi i tuoi testimoni contro di me, accresci la tua ira contro di me e truppe sempre fresche mi assalgono.

Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

18 P erché dunque mi hai fatto uscire dal grembo? Fossi morto, senza che alcun occhio mi avesse visto!

Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!

19 S arei stato come se non fossi mai esistito, portato dal grembo alla tomba.

I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

20 N on sono forse pochi i miei giorni? Smettila dunque, lasciami stare, perché possa riprendermi un po'

Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

21 p rima che me ne vada per non tornare piú, verso la terra di tenebre e di ombra di morte,

before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
