Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

2 S omos como las flores: al cortarlas se marchitan; somos como sombras: efímeras y pasajeras.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3 ¿ Y sobre alguien así pones los ojos? ¿Y con alguien así entras en juicio?

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

4 ¿ Acaso la impureza puede purificarse? ¡Eso es algo que nadie puede lograr!

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5 L os días del hombre ya están contados; tú has decidido ya cuántos meses vivirá; su vida tiene un límite que no puede traspasar.

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

6 ¡ Deja de mirarlo! ¡Déjalo tranquilo! ¡Deja que goce de la vida antes de morir!

turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

7 » Al árbol cortado, le quedan raíces; y vuelve a retoñar, y no le faltan renuevos.

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8 T al vez con el paso del tiempo envejezca su raíz, y su tronco llegue a morir en el polvo,

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

9 p ero al sentir el agua, cobra vida, y crece y echa nuevo follaje.

yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

10 P ero si el hombre muere, termina su vida; si el hombre perece, ¿a dónde va a parar?

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11 ¡ Se evapora, como el agua del mar! ¡Desaparece, como el agua de un río seco!

As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12 E l hombre muere y no vuelve a levantarse; ¡mientras el cielo exista, no se levantará de su sueño!

so man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

13 » Quisiera que me escondieras en el sepulcro, que me ocultaras mientras se aplaca tu enojo, que te fijaras un plazo para acordarte de mí!

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14 C uando el hombre muere, ¿acaso vuelve a vivir? Mientras tenga que cumplir mi servicio obligatorio, esperaré con paciencia a que llegue mi relevo.

If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

15 C uando tú me llames, yo te responderé; y te deleitarás en la obra de tus manos.

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

16 D ejarás entonces de vigilar todos mis pasos, y dejarás también de contar todos mis pecados,

For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

17 e charás en un saco y guardarás todas mis locuras, y cubrirás por completo mis injusticias.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

18 » El monte que se desgaja, no vuelve a levantarse; ruedan sus peñas y cambian de lugar;

And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

19 e l ímpetu del agua desgasta las piedras, el aluvión arrastra el polvo de la tierra, y tú pones fin a nuestras esperanzas.

The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

20 N os apabullas, y desaparecemos; nos avasallas, y entonces nos despides.

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21 S i nuestros hijos llegan a triunfar, no lo sabremos; tampoco llegaremos a saber si caen en la deshonra.

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22 S olamente sabremos de nuestros sufrimientos, y cargaremos con nuestra propia tristeza.»

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
