1 M ientras Jeroboán estaba frente al altar de Betel dispuesto a quemar incienso, un profeta de Judá llegó a Betel por órdenes del Señor,

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

2 y comenzó a hablar en contra del altar. Dijo: «Altar, altar, así ha dicho el Señor: La dinastía de David va a tener un descendiente. Se llamará Josías, y él sacrificará sobre ti a los sacerdotes que sobre ti queman incienso. En lugar de incienso, sobre ti se quemarán huesos humanos.»

And he cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.

3 E se mismo día, el profeta dijo: «Como señal de que el Señor ha hablado, el altar se hará pedazos y las cenizas que hay en él serán esparcidas.»

And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

4 C uando el rey Jeroboán escuchó las palabras que aquel varón de Dios pronunció en contra del altar de Betel, lleno de ira extendió el brazo y ordenó: «¡Deténganlo!» Pero el brazo que había extendido se le secó, y ya no lo pudo doblar.

And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Beth-el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

5 Y en efecto, el altar se hizo pedazos y las cenizas se esparcieron, con lo que se cumplió la señal que el varón de Dios había anunciado por órdenes del Señor.

The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.

6 E ntonces el rey le dijo al varón de Dios: «Te pido que ruegues por mí ante el Señor tu Dios, para que mi brazo sea sanado.» El varón de Dios rogó al Señor, y el brazo del rey fue sanado y volvió a estar como antes.

And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

7 E ntonces el rey le dijo al varón de Dios: «Ven a comer a mi palacio. Quiero hacerte un regalo.»

And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

8 P ero el varón de Dios contestó: «Aun si me dieras la mitad de tu palacio, no podría acompañarte. Tampoco podría comer ni beber agua en este lugar.

And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

9 E l Señor me dio órdenes precisas, Me dijo: “No comas ni bebas nada, ni regreses por el mismo camino.”»

for so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

10 Y el profeta volvió por otro camino, y no por el que había tomado para ir a Betel.

So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.

11 P ero había en Betel un viejo profeta, cuyo hijo había estado cerca del altar y había visto y oído lo sucedido. Éste fue con su padre y le contó lo que el profeta había hecho en Betel, y lo que le había dicho al rey.

Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

12 E l viejo profeta le preguntó: «¿Y por dónde se fue el profeta?» Cuando sus hijos le mostraron el camino que el varón de Dios había tomado para regresar a Judá,

And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

13 é l les ordenó que aparejaran su asno; y en cuanto sus hijos lo hicieron, él lo montó

And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,

14 y se fue por el camino que había tomado el varón de Dios. Poco después lo halló sentado a la sombra de una encina. Se detuvo y le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el varón de Dios que vino de Judá?» El varón le respondió: «Sí, yo soy.»

and went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

15 E ntonces el viejo profeta le dijo: «Ven a mi casa, y come pan conmigo.»

Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

16 P ero el varón de Dios le respondió: «No puedo volver contigo, ni acompañarte, ni tampoco puedo comer ni beber agua en este lugar,

And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

17 p orque el Señor me dijo: “No comas pan ni bebas agua allí, ni regreses por el mismo camino.”»

for it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 P ero el viejo profeta lo engañó y le dijo: «Yo, lo mismo que tú, también soy profeta. Un ángel me habló de parte del Señor, y me dijo: “Llévalo a tu casa para que coma pan y beba agua.”»

He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

19 E ntonces el varón de Dios lo acompañó a su casa, y allí comió pan y bebió agua.

So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20 P ero cuando estaban comiendo, el Señor le dio un mensaje al profeta que lo había hecho regresar,

And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back:

21 y al varón de Dios que había venido de Judá le dijo con fuerte voz: «Así dice el Señor: “Por haberte rebelado contra el mandato del Señor, por no haber obedecido el mandamiento del Señor tu Dios,

and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,

22 y por haber regresado para comer pan y beber agua en donde el Señor te ordenó que no lo hicieras, tu cuerpo no será sepultado junto con tus padres.”»

but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

23 E n cuanto el varón de Dios terminó de comer y beber, el viejo profeta que lo había engañado le aparejó el asno.

And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

24 Y a en el camino, un león salió y atacó al varón de Dios y lo mató, y su cuerpo quedó tendido en el camino, y junto a él se echaron el asno y el león.

And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.

25 L a gente que pasaba por allí, al ver tendido el cuerpo del profeta, y al león a su lado, fueron a la ciudad y se lo contaron al viejo profeta.

And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26 E l profeta que había hecho volver al varón de Dios los escuchó y dijo: «Se trata del varón de Dios. Pero desobedeció el mandato del Señor, y por eso el Señor lo castigó dejando que un león lo matara. Así se cumplió la palabra del Señor.»

And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.

27 D icho esto, llamó a sus hijos y les pidió que aparejaran su asno, y ellos así lo hicieron.

And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.

28 E ntonces el viejo profeta fue a ver el cuerpo tendido en el camino. El asno y el león todavía estaban echados junto al cuerpo, sin que el león hubiera devorado o dañado el cuerpo del asno.

And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.

29 E ntonces el viejo profeta levantó el cuerpo del varón de Dios, lo echó sobre el asno y se lo llevó. Al llegar a la ciudad, cantó endechas y luego lo enterró.

And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

30 C olocó el cuerpo en su propio sepulcro, y entre sollozos decía: «¡Ay, hermano mío!»

And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

31 D espués del entierro, llamó a sus hijos y les dijo: «Cuando yo muera, quiero que me sepulten junto a este varón de Dios. Pongan mis huesos junto a los suyos,

And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

32 p orque con toda seguridad se cumplirá la palabra del Señor contra el altar que está en Betel y contra todos los altares que se han levantado en las ciudades de Samaria.»

for the saying which he cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 A pesar de todo esto, Jeroboán no se arrepintió de su maldad, pues volvió a nombrar sacerdotes para los altares que había levantado entre el pueblo, y a cualquiera que quisiera ministrar en esos altares lo consagraba como sacerdote.

After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34 É ste fue el gran pecado de Jeroboán, y por eso su descendencia fue exterminada de la tierra.

And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
