1 C ry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

«Grida a squarciagola, non risparmiarti; alza la tua voce come una tromba e dichiara al mio popolo le sue trasgressioni e alla casa di Giacobbe i suoi peccati.

2 Y et they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

Mi cercano ogni giorno e desiderano conoscere le mie vie, come una nazione che pratichi la giustizia e non abbandoni la legge del suo DIO, mi chiedono dei giudizi giusti e desiderano avvicinarsi a DIO.

3 W herefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

Essi dicono: "Perché abbiamo digiunato, e tu non l'hai visto? Perché abbiamo afflitto le nostre anime, e tu non l'hai notato?". Ecco, nel giorno del vostro digiuno voi fate ciò che vi piace e costringete a un duro lavoro i vostri operai.

4 B ehold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

Ecco, voi digiunate per liti e dispute, e per percuotere empiamente col pugno. Digiunando come fate oggi, non fate udire la vostra voce in alto.

5 I s it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord ?

E' questo il digiuno di cui mi compiaccio, il giorno in cui l'uomo affligge la sua anima? Piegare la testa come un giunco e distendersi su un letto di sacco e di cenere? Chiami forse questo un digiuno e un giorno gradito all'Eterno?

6 I s not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Il digiuno di cui mi compiaccio non è forse questo: spezzare le catene della malvagità, sciogliere i legami del giogo rimandare liberi gli oppressi, spezzare ogni giogo?

7 I s it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

Non consiste forse nel rompere il tuo pane con chi ha fame, nel portare a casa tua i poveri senza tetto, nel vestire chi è nudo, senza trascurare quelli della tua stessa carne?

8 T hen shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward.

Allora la tua luce irromperà come l'aurora e la tua guarigione germoglierà prontamente, la tua giustizia ti precederà e la gloria dell'Eterno sarà la tua retroguardia.

9 T hen shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

Allora chiamerai e l'Eterno ti risponderà, griderai ed egli dirà: Eccomi! Se tu togli di mezzo a te il giogo, il puntare il dito e il parlare iniquo.

10 a nd if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:

se provvedi ai bisogni dell'affamato e sazi l'anima afflitta, allora la tua luce sorgerà nelle tenebre e la tua oscurità sarà come il mezzogiorno.

11 a nd the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

L'Eterno ti guiderà del continuo sazierà la tua anima nei luoghi aridi e darà vigore alle tue ossa, tu sarai come un giardino annaffiato e come una sorgente d'acqua le cui acque non vengono meno.

12 A nd they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

I tuoi riedificheranno le antiche rovine, e tu rialzerai le fondamenta di molte generazioni passate; cosí sarai chiamato il riparatore di brecce, il restauratore dei sentieri per abitare nel paese.

13 I f thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Se tu trattieni il piede dal violare il sabato, dal fare i tuoi affari nel mio santo giorno, se chiami il sabato delizia, il giorno santo dell'Eterno, degno di onore, se lo onori astenendoti dai tuoi viaggi, dallo sbrigare i tuoi affari e dal parlare dei tuoi problemi,

14 t hen shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

allora troverai il tuo diletto nell'Eterno, e io ti farò cavalcare sulle alture della terra e ti darò da mangiare l'eredità di Giacobbe tuo padre, poiché la bocca dell'Eterno ha parlato».
