1 І було Самуїлове слово для всього Ізраїля. І вийшов Ізраїль на війну проти филистимлян, та й таборував при Евен-Гаезері, а филистимляни таборували в Афеку.

So the news of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They set up their tents beside Ebenezer while the Philistines stayed at Aphek.

2 І вишикувались филистимляни навпроти Ізраїля, а коли бій став тяжкий, то Ізраїль був побитий перед филистимлянами. І вони побили в боєвому шикові на полі близько чотирьох тисяч чоловіка.

The Philistines came dressed for battle to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel lost to the Philistines. The Philistines killed about 4, 000 men on the battle-field.

3 І прийшов народ до табору, а Ізраїлеві старші сказали: Чому вдарив нас Господь сьогодні перед филистимлянами? Візьмімо собі з Шіло ковчега Господнього заповіту, і нехай ввійде поміж нас, і нехай спасе нас із рук наших ворогів.

When the people returned to the tents, the leaders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord made us lose today to the Philistines? Let us bring the special box that holds the Law of the Lord here from Shiloh. Then He may come among us and save us from the power of those who fight against us.”

4 І послав народ до Шіло, і понесли звідти ковчега заповіту Господа Саваота, що сидить на херувимах. А там були двоє Ілієвих синів, Хофні та Пінхас, із ковчегом Божого заповіту.

So the people sent men to Shiloh to take the special box with the Law of the Lord of All Who sits above the cherubim. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the special box with the Law of God.

5 І сталося, як ковчег заповіту Господнього прибув до табору, то ввесь Ізраїль скрикнув великим окриком, аж застогнала земля!

When the box with the Law of the Lord came among the tents, all Israel called out with a loud noise, so that the earth shook.

6 А филистимляни почули голос окрику, та й сказали: Що це за голос цього великого окрику в єврейському таборі? І довідалися вони, що Господній ковчег прибув до табору.

When the Philistines heard the noise, they said, “What does this loud noise among the Hebrews mean?” Then they understood that the special box of the Lord had come among the Israelites.

7 І полякалися филистимляни, і говорили: Бог прибув до табору! І сказали вони: Біда нам, бо такого, як це, не було ще ніколи!

The Philistines were afraid. They said, “A god has come among the tents. Trouble has come to us! Nothing like this has happened before.

8 Б іда нам! Хто нас урятує від руки цих потужних богів? Оце вони, ті боги, що вдарили були Єгипет усякою поразою у пустині!

Trouble has come to us! Who will save us from the hand of these powerful gods? These are the gods who destroyed the Egyptians with all kinds of troubles in the desert.

9 З міцніться та будьте мужні, филистимляни, щоб ви не служили євреям, як вони служили вам. І будьте мужні, і воюйте!

Be strong and act like men, O Philistines. Or you will be made to work for the Hebrews, as they have been made to work for you. Be men and fight.”

10 І воювали филистимляни. І був побитий Ізраїль, і кожен утікав до свого намету. І та поразка була дуже велика. І впало з Ізраїля тридцять тисяч піхоти.

So the Philistines fought, and Israel lost. Every man ran to his tent. And many were killed, for 30, 000 foot soldiers of Israel fell.

11 А Божий ковчег був узятий, і два Ілієві сини, Хофні та Пінхас, полягли...

The special box of God was taken. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died. Death of Eli

12 І побіг один веніяминівець із бою, і прибув того дня до Шіло; а одежа його була подерта, і порох на голові його.

A man of Benjamin ran from the battle and came to Shiloh the same day. His clothes were torn and he had dust on his head.

13 І прибув він, аж ось Ілій сидить на стільці при дорозі й виглядає, бо серце йому тремтіло за Божого ковчега. А той чоловік прийшов, і розповів у місті, і закричало все місто!

When he came, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for he was very worried about the special box of God. The man told the news in the city, and all the city cried out.

14 А Ілій почув голос того крику та й сказав: Що це за голос того натовпу? А той чоловік поспішив і прийшов, та й розповів Ілієві.

When Eli heard the noise in the city, he said, “What does this noise mean?” Then the man came in a hurry and told Eli.

15 А Ілій був віку дев'ятидесяти й восьми літ, а очі його померкли, і він не міг бачити.

Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were weak so that he could not see.

16 І сказав той чоловік до Ілія: Я той, що прибіг із бою, і я втік сьогодні з бойових лав. І сказав Ілій: Що то сталося, мій сину?

The man said to Eli, “I have come from the battle. I ran from the battle today.” And Eli said, “How did it go, my son?”

17 І відповів вісник і сказав: Ізраїль побіг перед филистимлянами, і сталась велика поразка в народі. І обидва сини твої, Хофні та Пінхас, полягли. А ковчег Божий узятий!

The one who brought the news answered, “Israel has run from the Philistines and there have been many people killed. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead. And the special box of God has been taken.”

18 І сталося, як згадав він про Божого ковчега, то впав Ілій зо стільця навзнак при брамі, зламався карк йому, і він помер, бо той муж був старий та тяжкий. А він судив Ізраїля сорок літ.

When he told about the special box of God, Eli fell back off the seat by the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

19 А невістка його, Пінхасова жінка, була важка, близька до родів. І як зачула вона ту звістку, що взятий Божий ковчег і помер тесть її та чоловік її, то впала на коліна, та й породила, бо прийшли на неї породільні болі її.

Now his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was going to have a child and about to give birth. When she heard the news that the special box of God was taken and that her father-in-law and husband had died, she started to give birth, for her pains came upon her.

20 А як настав час смерти її, то казали ті, що стояли при ній: Не бійся, бо ти породила сина! Та вона не відповіла, і не взяла цього до серця свого.

About the time of her death, the women who stood by her said to her, “Do not be afraid. For you have given birth to a son.” But she did not answer or listen to them.

21 І вона назвала ім'я тому хлопцеві: Іхавод, кажучи: Відійшла Ізраїлева слава! Бо почула про взяття Божого ковчегу, і про тестя свого та про мужа свого,

She gave the boy the name Ichabod, saying, “The honor has left Israel,” because the special box of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and husband.

22 т а й сказала: Відійшла слава від Ізраїля, бо взятий Божий ковчег.

She said, “The honor has left Israel, for the special box of God was taken.”
