1 Ц ар Валтасар справив велике прийняття для тисячі своїх вельмож, і на очах тієї тисячі пив вино.

King Belshazzar gave a special supper for a thousand of his important men, and drank wine with them.

2 К оли вино опанувало розум, Валтасар наказав принести золотий та срібний посуд, який виніс був його батько Навуходоносор із храму, що в Єрусалимі, щоб із нього пили цар та вельможі його, його жінки та його наложниці.

When Belshazzar tasted the wine, he had all the gold and silver cups brought which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the Lord’s house in Jerusalem. The king sent for them so that he and his important men and all his wives could drink from them.

3 Т оді принесли золотий посуд, що винесли з храму божого дому, що в Єрусалимі, і пили з них цар та вельможі його, жінки його та його наложниці.

So they brought the gold cups that had been taken from the house of God in Jerusalem. And the king and his important men and all his wives drank from them.

4 П или вони вино й славили богів золотих та срібних, мідяних, залізних, дерев'яних та камінних.

They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, brass, iron, wood, and stone.

5 А ж ось тієї хвилини вийшли пальці людської руки, і писали навпроти свічника на вапні стіни царського палацу, і цар бачив зарис руки, що писала.

All at once the fingers of a man’s hand were seen writing on the wall near the lamp-stand of the king’s house. And the king saw the back of the hand as it wrote.

6 Т оді змінилася ясність царя, і думки його настрашили його, ослабіли суглоби крижів його, і билися коліна його одне об одне.

Then the king’s face turned white, and his thoughts turned to fear. His legs became weak and his knees began shaking.

7 Ц ар сильно закричав привести заклиначів, халдеїв та віщунів. Цар заговорив та й сказав вавилонським мудрецям: Кожен муж, що прочитає це писання й об'явить мені його розв'язку, той зодягне пурпуру й золотого ланцюга на свою шию, і буде панувати третім у царстві.

The king called in a loud voice for the wonder-workers, the men who learned from stars and those who used their secret ways. He said to the wise men of Babylon, “Any man who can read this writing and tell me what it means will be dressed with purple clothing and have a chain of gold around his neck. And he will be the third in power in the nation.”

8 Т оді поприходили всі царські мудреці, та не могли прочитати писання й об'явити цареві його розв'язку.

Then all the king’s wise men came in. But they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.

9 Т оді цар Валтасар сильно перестрашився, а його ясність змінилася на ньому, і його вельможі були безрадні.

Then King Belshazzar was very afraid. His face lost even more of its color, and his important men did not know what to do.

10 Н а слова царя та вельмож його ввійшла до дому прийняття цариця. Цариця заговорила та й сказала: Царю, живи навіки! Нехай не страшать тебе думки твої, а ясність твоя нехай не міняється!

The queen heard the words of the king and his men, and came into the room where they were eating. She said, “O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts make you afraid or your face turn white.

11 Є в твоєму царстві муж, що в ньому дух святих богів, а за днів твого батька в ньому знаходилась ясність і розум та мудрість, рівна мудрості богів. І цар Навуходоносор, твій батько, настановив його начальником чарівників, заклиначів, халдеїв, віщунів, батько твій цар,

There is a man in your nation who has the spirit of the holy gods in him. In your father’s time light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him. And King Nebuchadnezzar, your father, made him the head of the wonder-workers, the men who learned from stars, and those who use their secret ways.

12 б о в ньому, в Даниїлові, якому цар дав ім'я Валтасар, знаходився надмірний дух, і знання та розум розв'язувати сни, і висловлювати загадки та розплутувати вузли. Нехай буде покликаний тепер Даниїл, і нехай він оголосить розв'язку!

This was because a special spirit was found in this Daniel whom the king called Belteshazzar. He had much learning and understanding to tell the meaning of dreams and secrets and to give answers to problems. Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what this means.” Daniel Tells What the Writing Means

13 Т ого часу Даниїл був приведений перед царя. Цар заговорив та й сказав до Даниїла: Чи ти той Даниїл, що з Юдиних синів вигнання, яких вивів цар, мій батько, з Юдеї?

So Daniel was brought to the king. And the king said to him, “Are you that Daniel who is one of the people whom my father the king brought from Judah?

14 І чув я про тебе, що в тобі дух богів, і що в тобі знаходиться ясність, і розум та надмірна мудрість.

I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you. Light and understanding and special wisdom have been found in you also.

15 А тепер були приведені перед мене мудреці, заклиначі, щоб прочитали оце писання, і розповіли мені його розв'язку, та не могли вони висловити розв'язки цієї речі.

The wise men and wonder-workers were brought in to me so that they might read this writing and tell me what it means. But they could not tell me its meaning.

16 А я чув про тебе, що ти можеш розв'язувати недовідоме, і розплутувати вузли. Тож тепер, якщо можеш прочитати це писання, і розповісти мені його розв'язку, то зодягнеш пурпуру, а золотий ланцюг на твою шию, і ти будеш панувати третім у царстві.

Now I have heard that you are able to tell the meaning of such things and give answers to hard problems. If you are able to read the writing and tell me what it means, you will be dressed in purple and wear a chain of gold around your neck. And you will be the third in power in the nation.”

17 Т оді Даниїл відповів та й сказав перед царем: Твої дари нехай будуть тобі, а дарунки свої давай іншим. Це писання я прочитаю цареві, і розповім тобі його розв'язку.

Then Daniel answered the king, saying, “Keep your gifts for yourself, or give them to someone else. But I will read the writing to the king and tell him what it means.

18 Т и, царю, Всевишній Бог дав твоєму батькові Навуходоносорові царство, і велич, і славу та пишноту.

O king, the Most High made your father Nebuchadnezzar king, and gave him greatness, honor, and power.

19 А через велич, яку Він дав був йому, всі народи, племена та язики тремтіли та лякалися перед ним, бо кого він хотів забивав, а кого хотів лишав при житті, і кого хотів підіймав, а кого хотів понижував.

Because of the greatness He gave to him, all the people of every nation and language shook in fear in front of him. He killed whomever he wanted. And he let live whomever he wanted. He gave honor to whomever he wanted. And he put down whomever he wanted.

20 А коли загордилося його серце, а дух його ще більше запишнів, він був скинений з трону свого царства, і його слава була взята від нього.

But when his heart and spirit became proud and he acted in pride, he was taken from his throne and his greatness was taken from him.

21 І він був вигнаний з-поміж людських синів, і серце його було зрівняне зо звіриним, а пробування його було з дикими ослами. Годували його травою, як волів, а небесною росою зрошувалося його тіло, аж поки він не пізнав, що в людському царстві панує Всевишній Бог, і Він ставить над ним того, кого хоче.

He was driven away from people, and his mind became like that of an animal. He lived with the wild donkeys. He ate grass like cattle, and his body became wet with the water from heaven. It was like this for him until he understood that the Most High God is ruler over the nation of all men, and that He lets whomever He wants rule it.

22 А ти, сину його Валтасаре, не смирив свого серця, хоч усе це знав.

Yet you, his son Belshazzar, have not put away the pride from your heart, even though you knew all this.

23 І ти піднісся понад Небесного Господа, і посуд храму Його принесли перед тебе, а ти та вельможі твої, жінки твої та наложниці твої пили з них вино, і ти хвалив богів срібних та золотих, мідяних, залізних, дерев'яних та камінних, що не бачать, і не чують та не знають, а Бога, що в руці Його душа твоя й що Його всі дороги твої, ти не прославляв.

You have honored yourself more than the Lord of heaven. The cups of His house have been brought to you. And you and your important men and all your wives have been drinking wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver, gold, brass, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see, hear or understand. But you have not honored the God Who holds your life and your ways in His hand.

24 Т ого часу від Нього посланий зарис руки, і написане оце писання.

So the hand was sent from Him to write on your wall.

25 А оце писання, що написане: Мене, мене, текел упарсін.

“This is what was written: ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN.’

26 О сь розв'язка цієї речі: Мене порахував Бог царство твоє, і покінчив його.

And this is what it means: ‘MENE’ means that God has numbered the days of your rule and has brought it to an end.

27 Т екел ти зважений на вазі, і знайдений легеньким.

‘TEKEL’ means that you have been weighed and found to be too light.

28 П ерес поділене царство твоє, і віддане мідянам та персам.

‘PERES’ means that your nation has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

29 Т оді наказав Валтасар, і надягли на Даниїла пурпуру, а золотого ланцюга на шию його, і розголосили про нього, що він буде третім пануючим у царстві.

Then Belshazzar had them dress Daniel in purple and put a chain of gold around his neck. And he made it known that Daniel was the third most powerful ruler in the nation. Belshazzar Is Killed

30 Т ієї ж ночі був забитий Валтасар, цар халдейський.

That very night Belshazzar the king of Babylon was killed.

31 ( 6-1) А мідянин Дарій одержав царство в віці шостидесяти й двох років.

So Darius the Mede became the king when he was sixty-two years old.
