1 І почув Шефатія, син Маттанів, і Ґедалія, син Пашхурів, і Юхал, син Шелемеїн, і Пашхур, син Малкійїн, ті слова, що Єремія говорив до всього народу, кажучи:

Now Shaphatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard Jeremiah telling all the people,

2 Т ак говорить Господь: Хто сидітиме в цьому місті, той помре від меча, голоду та від моровиці, а хто вийде до халдеїв, той буде жити, і стане йому душа його за здобич, і він житиме!

“The Lord says, ‘He who stays in this city will die by the sword and by hunger and by disease. But he who goes over to the Babylonians will live. He will get away with his life and live.’

3 Т ак говорить Господь: Напевно буде дане це місто в руку війська вавилонського царя, і він здобуде його!

The Lord says, ‘For sure this city will be given to the army of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.’”

4 І сказали зверхники до царя: Нехай же уб'ють цього чоловіка, бо він ослаблює руки вояків, позосталих у цьому місті, та руки всього народу, говорячи їм слова, як оці. Бо цей чоловік не шукає для цього народу добра, а тільки зла!...

Then the leaders said to the king, “Now let this man be put to death. For he is making the hearts of the men of war weak who are left in this city, and of all the people, by saying such words to them. This man does not care about the well-being of these people, but instead wants them hurt.”

5 І сказав цар Седекія: Ось він у ваших руках, бо цар нічого не вдіє супроти вас.

So King Zedekiah said, “He is in your hands. The king can do nothing against you.”

6 І взяли Єремію та й кинули його до ями Малкійї, царевого сина, що в подвір'ї в'язниці, і спустили Єремію шнурами. А в ямі була не вода, а тільки багно, і загруз Єремія в багні!

So they took Jeremiah and put him into the well of Malchijah the king’s son, in the open space of the prison, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the well, but only mud. And Jeremiah went down into the mud.

7 І почув мурин Евед-Мелех, евнух, який був у царському домі, що Єремію кинули до ями, а цар сидів у Веніяминовій брамі.

But Ebedmelech, an Ethiopian servant of the king who had been made so he could not have children, heard in the king’s house that they had put Jeremiah into the well. Now the king was sitting in the Gate of Benjamin.

8 І вийшов Евед-Мелех з царського дому, та й сказав цареві, говорячи:

And Ebedmelech went from the king’s house and said to him,

9 П ане мій царю, ці люди вчинили зло в усьому, що зробили пророкові Єремії, якого кинули до ями, і помре він на своєму місці через голод, бо в місті нема вже хліба...

“My lord the king, these men have been very sinful in all they have done to Jeremiah the man of God. They have put him in the well. And he will die there of hunger, for there is no more bread in the city.”

10 І наказав цар муринові Евед-Мелехові, говорячи: Візьми з собою звідси троє люда, і витягнеш пророка Єремію з ями, поки він ще не вмер!

Then the king told Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “I am giving you the power to take thirty men with you, and bring Jeremiah the man of God up from the well before he dies.”

11 І взяв Евед-Мелех тих людей з собою, і прийшов до царського дому під скарбницею, і набрав ізвідти подертого шмаття та непотрібних лахів, і спустив їх до Єремії до ями шнурами.

So Ebed-melech as the leader took the men with him and went into the king’s house to a place under the store-room. He took from there old pieces of cloth and worn-out clothes and let them down by ropes to Jeremiah in the well.

12 І сказав мурин Евед-Мелех до Єремії: Поклади це подерте шмаття та лахи попід пахи своїх рук під шнури! І зробив Єремія так.

Then Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the clothes and pieces of cloth between your arms and the ropes,” and Jeremiah did so.

13 І потягнули Єремію шнурами, і витягли його з ями. І сидів Єремія в подвір'ї в'язниці.

Then they pulled Jeremiah up with the ropes and lifted him out of the well. And Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison. Zedekiah Asks Jeremiah about Future Happenings

14 І послав цар Седекія, і взяв пророка Єремію до себе, до третього входу, що в домі Господньому. І сказав цар до Єремії: Запитаю я тебе про щось, не заховуй від мене нічого!

King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the man of God and had him brought to him at the third door of the house of the Lord. And the king said to him, “I am going to ask you something. Do not hide anything from me.”

15 І сказав Єремія до Седекії: Коли я провіщу тобі, то чи справді не вб'єш ти мене? А коли пораджу тобі, то мене не послухаєш...

Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not kill me? Even if I speak wise words to you, you will not listen to me.”

16 І присягнув цар Седекія Єремії таємно, говорячи: Як живий Господь, що створив нам цю душу: не вб'ю тебе, і не дам тебе в руку тих людей, що шукають твоєї душі!

But King Zedekiah promised Jeremiah in secret, “As the Lord lives, Who gave us life, for sure I will not kill you or give you over to these men who want to kill you.”

17 І сказав Єремія до Седекії: Так говорить Господь, Бог Саваот, Бог Ізраїлів: Якщо справді вийдеш ти до зверхників вавилонського царя, то житиме душа твоя, а місто це не буде спалене огнем, і будеш жити ти та дім твій.

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God of All, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the captains of the king of Babylon, then you will live. This city will not be burned with fire, and you and those of your house will live.

18 А якщо ти не вийдеш до вавилонського царя, то це місто буде дане в руку халдеїв, і вони спалять його огнем, і ти не втечеш з їхньої руки...

But if you will not go out to the captains of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given to the Babylonians. They will burn it with fire, and you will not get away from them.’”

19 І сказав цар Седекія до Єремії: Я боюся юдеїв, що перейшли до халдеїв, щоб не дали мене в їхню руку, і щоб не насміялися з мене...

King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians. I am afraid I will be given over to them, and that they will make it hard for me.”

20 І сказав Єремія: Не дадуть! Послухай Господнього голосу до того, що я говорю тобі, і буде добре тобі, і буде жити душа твоя!

But Jeremiah said, “They will not give you to them. Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you and you will live.

21 А якщо ти не схочеш вийти, то ось слово, що Господь мені виявив:

But if you will not go out, this is the word which the Lord has shown me:

22 І ось усі жінки, що залишилися в домі Юдиного царя, будуть відведені до зверхників вавилонського царя, і вони скажуть: Підмовили тебе й перемогли тебе твої приятелі; погрузили в багно твої ноги, та вони назад відійшли.

‘All of the women left in the house of the king of Judah are going to be brought out to the captains of the king of Babylon. And these women will say, “Your trusted friends have lied to you and have become stronger than you. Now when your feet have gone down into the mud, they turn away from you.”

23 А всі жінки твої та всі сини твої будуть відведені до халдеїв, і ти не втечеш з їхньої руки, бо рукою вавилонського царя будеш схоплений, а місто це буде спалене огнем...

All your wives and your sons will be led out to the Babylonians. And you yourself will not get away from them. The king of Babylon will take hold of you, and this city will be burned with fire.’”

24 І сказав Седекія до Єремії: Нехай ніхто не знає про ці слова, і ти не помреш.

Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know about these words and you will not die.

25 Б о коли почують зверхники, що я говорив з тобою, то прийдуть до тебе та й скажуть тобі: Розкажи но нам, що говорив ти цареві! Не ховай перед нами, і не вб'ємо тебе. І що ж говорив тобі цар?

The leaders might hear that I have talked with you, and come and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king, and what the king said to you. Do not hide it from us, and we will not kill you.’

26 т о скажеш до них: Я склав своє благання перед царське обличчя, щоб не вертали мене до Єгонатанового дому, щоб там не померти.

Then you must tell them, ‘I was asking the king not to make me return to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”

27 І прийшли всі зверхники до Єремії й запиталися його, і він розказав їм згідно зо всіма тими словами, що звелів був цар. І вони мовчки відійшли від нього, бо не довідались про обговорену річ.

All the leaders did come to Jeremiah to ask him questions. So he said to them everything the king had told him to say. And they stopped speaking with him, because the words he and the king had spoken together had not been heard by anyone else.

28 І сидів Єремія на подвір'ї в'язниці аж до дня, коли був здобутий Єрусалим. І сталося, як був здобутий Єрусалим:

So Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison until the day Jerusalem was taken.
