5 A caso você consegue fazer dele um bichinho de estimação, como se fosse um passarinho, ou pôr-lhe uma coleira para dá-lo às suas filhas?

“Will you play with him as with a bird, Or will you bind him for your maidens?

6 P oderão os negociantes vendê-lo? Ou reparti-lo entre os comerciantes?

“Will the traders bargain over him? Will they divide him among the merchants?

7 V ocê consegue encher de arpões o seu couro, e de lanças de pesca a sua cabeça?

“Can you fill his skin with harpoons, Or his head with fishing spears?

8 S e puser a mão nele, a luta ficará em sua memória, e nunca mais você tornará a fazê-lo.

“Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle; you will not do it again!

9 E sperar vencê-lo é ilusão; apenas vê-lo já é assustador.

“ Behold, your expectation is false; Will you be laid low even at the sight of him?

“Who can strip off his outer armor? Who can come within his double mail?

14 Q uem ousa abrir as portas de sua boca, cercada com seus dentes temíveis?

“Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth there is terror.

15 S uas costas possuem fileiras de escudos firmemente unidos;

“ His strong scales are his pride, Shut up as with a tight seal.

16 c ada um está tão junto do outro que nem o ar passa entre eles;

“One is so near to another That no air can come between them.

17 e stão tão interligados que é impossível separá-los.

“They are joined one to another; They clasp each other and cannot be separated.

18 S eu forte sopro atira lampejos de luz; seus olhos são como os raios da alvorada.

“His sneezes flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

19 T ições saem da sua boca; fagulhas de fogo estalam.

“Out of his mouth go burning torches; Sparks of fire leap forth.

20 D as suas narinas sai fumaça como de panela fervente sobre fogueira de juncos.

“Out of his nostrils smoke goes forth As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.

21 S eu sopro acende o carvão, e da sua boca saltam chamas.

“His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes forth from his mouth.

22 T anta força reside em seu pescoço que o terror vai adiante dele.

“In his neck lodges strength, And dismay leaps before him.

23 A s dobras da sua carne são fortemente unidas; são tão firmes que não se movem.

“The folds of his flesh are joined together, Firm on him and immovable.

24 S eu peito é duro como pedra, rijo como a pedra inferior do moinho.

“His heart is as hard as a stone, Even as hard as a lower millstone.

25 Q uando ele se ergue, os poderosos se apavoram; fogem com medo dos seus golpes.

“When he raises himself up, the mighty fear; Because of the crashing they are bewildered.

26 A espada que o atinge nada lhe faz, nem a lança nem a flecha nem o dardo.

“The sword that reaches him cannot avail, Nor the spear, the dart or the javelin.

27 F erro ele trata como palha, e bronze como madeira podre.

“He regards iron as straw, Bronze as rotten wood.

28 A s flechas não o afugentam, as pedras das fundas são como cisco para ele.

“The arrow cannot make him flee; Slingstones are turned into stubble for him.

29 O bastão lhe parece fiapo de palha; o brandir da grande lança o faz rir.

“Clubs are regarded as stubble; He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.

30 S eu ventre é como caco denteado, e deixa rastro na lama como o trilho de debulhar.

“His underparts are like sharp potsherds; He spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mire.

31 E le faz as profundezas se agitarem como caldeirão fervente, e revolve o mar como pote de ungüento.

“He makes the depths boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.

32 D eixa atrás de si um rastro cintilante, como se fossem os cabelos brancos do abismo.

“Behind him he makes a wake to shine; One would think the deep to be gray-haired.

33 N ada na terra se equipara a ele: criatura destemida!

“ Nothing on earth is like him, One made without fear.

34 C om desdém olha todos os altivos; reina soberano sobre todos os orgulhosos”.

“ He looks on everything that is high; He is king over all the sons of pride.”
