1 “ ¿Sacarás tú a Leviatán (al monstruo marino) con anzuelo, O sujetarás con cuerda su lengua?

“ Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down his tongue with a cord?

2 ¿ Pondrás una soga en su nariz, O perforarás su quijada con gancho ?

“Can you put a rope in his nose Or pierce his jaw with a hook?

3 ¿ Acaso te hará muchas súplicas, O te hablará palabras sumisas?

“Will he make many supplications to you, Or will he speak to you soft words?

4 ¿ Hará un pacto contigo? ¿Lo tomarás como siervo para siempre?

“Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him for a servant forever?

5 ¿ Jugarás con él como con un pájaro, O lo atarás para tus doncellas?

“Will you play with him as with a bird, Or will you bind him for your maidens?

6 ¿ Traficarán con él los comerciantes ? ¿Lo repartirán entre los mercaderes?

“Will the traders bargain over him? Will they divide him among the merchants?

7 ¿ Podrás llenar su piel de arpones, O de lanzas de pescar su cabeza?

“Can you fill his skin with harpoons, Or his head with fishing spears?

8 P on tu mano sobre él; Te acordarás de la batalla y no lo volverás a hacer.

“Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle; you will not do it again!

9 F alsa es tu esperanza; Con sólo verlo serás derribado.

“ Behold, your expectation is false; Will you be laid low even at the sight of him?

10 N adie hay tan audaz que lo despierte; ¿Quién, pues, podrá estar delante de Mí?

“No one is so fierce that he dares to arouse him; Who then is he that can stand before Me?

11 ¿ Quién Me ha dado algo para que Yo se lo restituya ? Cuanto existe debajo de todo el cielo es Mío.

“Who has given to Me that I should repay him ? Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine.

12 N o dejaré de hablar de sus miembros, Ni de su gran poder, ni de su agraciada figura.

“I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, Or his mighty strength, or his orderly frame.

13 ¿ Quién lo desnudará de su armadura exterior ? ¿Quién penetrará su doble malla ?

“Who can strip off his outer armor? Who can come within his double mail?

14 ¿ Quién abrirá las puertas de sus fauces ? Alrededor de sus dientes hay terror.

“Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth there is terror.

15 S us fuertes escamas son su orgullo, Cerradas como con apretado sello.

“ His strong scales are his pride, Shut up as with a tight seal.

16 L a una está tan cerca de la otra Que el aire no puede penetrar entre ellas.

“One is so near to another That no air can come between them.

17 U nidas están una a la otra; Se traban entre sí y no pueden separarse.

“They are joined one to another; They clasp each other and cannot be separated.

18 S us estornudos dan destellos de luz, Y sus ojos son como los párpados del alba.

“His sneezes flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

19 D e su boca salen antorchas, Chispas de fuego saltan.

“Out of his mouth go burning torches; Sparks of fire leap forth.

20 D e sus narices sale humo, Como de una olla que hierve sobre juncos encendidos.

“Out of his nostrils smoke goes forth As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.

21 S u aliento enciende carbones, Y una llama sale de su boca.

“His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes forth from his mouth.

22 E n su cuello reside el poder, Y salta el desaliento delante de él.

“In his neck lodges strength, And dismay leaps before him.

23 U nidos están los pliegues de su carne, Firmes están en él e inconmovibles.

“The folds of his flesh are joined together, Firm on him and immovable.

24 S u corazón es duro como piedra, Duro como piedra de molino.

“His heart is as hard as a stone, Even as hard as a lower millstone.

25 C uando él se levanta, los poderosos tiemblan; A causa del estruendo quedan confundidos.

“When he raises himself up, the mighty fear; Because of the crashing they are bewildered.

26 L a espada que lo alcance no puede prevalecer, Ni la lanza, el dardo, o la jabalina.

“The sword that reaches him cannot avail, Nor the spear, the dart or the javelin.

27 E stima el hierro como paja, El bronce como madera carcomida.

“He regards iron as straw, Bronze as rotten wood.

28 N o lo hace huir la flecha; En hojarasca se convierten para él las piedras de la honda.

“The arrow cannot make him flee; Slingstones are turned into stubble for him.

29 C omo hojarasca son estimados los mazos; Se ríe del blandir de la jabalina.

“Clubs are regarded as stubble; He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.

30 P or debajo tiene como tiestos puntiagudos; Se extiende como trillo sobre el lodo.

“His underparts are like sharp potsherds; He spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mire.

31 H ace hervir las profundidades como olla; Hace el mar como un recipiente de ungüento.

“He makes the depths boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.

32 D etrás de sí hace brillar una estela; Se diría que el abismo es blanca cabellera.

“Behind him he makes a wake to shine; One would think the deep to be gray-haired.

33 N ada en la tierra es semejante a él, Que fue hecho sin temer a nada.

“ Nothing on earth is like him, One made without fear.

34 D esafía a todo ser altivo; él es rey sobre todos los orgullosos.”

“ He looks on everything that is high; He is king over all the sons of pride.”
