1 ¿ Sacarás tú al leviatán con el anzuelo, o con la cuerda que le echares en su lengua?

“ Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down his tongue with a cord?

2 ¿ Pondrás tú garfio en sus narices, y horadarás con espinas su quijada?

“Can you put a rope in his nose Or pierce his jaw with a hook?

3 ¿ Por ventura multiplicará él ruegos para contigo? ¿Te hablará él lisonjas?

“Will he make many supplications to you, Or will he speak to you soft words?

4 ¿ Por ventura hará pacto contigo para que lo tomes por siervo perpetuo?

“Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him for a servant forever?

5 ¿ Jugarás por ventura con él como con pájaro, y lo atarás para tus niñas?

“Will you play with him as with a bird, Or will you bind him for your maidens?

6 ¿ Por ventura harán banquete por causa de los compañeros? ¿Lo partirán entre los mercaderes?

“Will the traders bargain over him? Will they divide him among the merchants?

7 ¿ Cortarás tú con cuchillo su cuero, o con asta de pescadores su cabeza?

“Can you fill his skin with harpoons, Or his head with fishing spears?

8 P on tu mano sobre él; te acordarás de la batalla, y nunca más tornarás.

“Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle; you will not do it again!

9 H e aquí que tu esperanza acerca de él será burlada; porque aun a su sola vista se desmayarán.

“ Behold, your expectation is false; Will you be laid low even at the sight of him?

10 N adie hay tan osado que lo despierte; ¿quién pues podrá estar delante de mí?

“No one is so fierce that he dares to arouse him; Who then is he that can stand before Me?

11 ¿ Quién me ha anticipado, para que yo restituya? Todo lo que hay debajo del cielo es mío.

“Who has given to Me that I should repay him ? Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine.

12 Y o no ocultaré sus mentiras, ni lo de su fuerza ni la belleza de su orden.

“I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, Or his mighty strength, or his orderly frame.

13 ¿ Quién descubrirá la delantera de su vestidura? ¿Quién se llegará a él con freno doble?

“Who can strip off his outer armor? Who can come within his double mail?

14 ¿ Quién abrirá las puertas de su rostro? Los órdenes de sus dientes espantan.

“Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth there is terror.

15 S us escamas son su orgullo, cerrados entre sí como con sello.

“ His strong scales are his pride, Shut up as with a tight seal.

16 E l uno se junta tan cerca del otro, que viento no entra entre ellos.

“One is so near to another That no air can come between them.

17 P egado está el uno con el otro, están trabados entre sí, que no se pueden apartar.

“They are joined one to another; They clasp each other and cannot be separated.

18 C on sus estornudos encienden lumbre, y sus ojos son como los párpados del alba.

“His sneezes flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

19 D e su boca salen hachas de fuego, centellas de fuego proceden.

“Out of his mouth go burning torches; Sparks of fire leap forth.

20 D e sus narices sale humo como de una olla o caldero que hierve.

“Out of his nostrils smoke goes forth As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.

21 S u aliento enciende los carbones, y de su boca sale llama.

“His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes forth from his mouth.

22 E n su cerviz mora la fortaleza, y delante de él es deshecho el trabajo.

“In his neck lodges strength, And dismay leaps before him.

23 L as fallas de su carne están pegadas entre sí; está firme su carne en él, y no se mueve.

“The folds of his flesh are joined together, Firm on him and immovable.

24 S u corazón es firme como una piedra, y fuerte como una pieza de la muela de abajo.

“His heart is as hard as a stone, Even as hard as a lower millstone.

25 D e su grandeza tienen temor los fuertes, y por quebrantamientos se remueven el pecado.

“When he raises himself up, the mighty fear; Because of the crashing they are bewildered.

26 C uando alguno lo alcanzare, ni espada, ni lanza, ni dardo, ni coselete durará contra él.

“The sword that reaches him cannot avail, Nor the spear, the dart or the javelin.

27 E l hierro estima por paja, y el bronce por leño podrido.

“He regards iron as straw, Bronze as rotten wood.

28 S aeta no le hace huir; las piedras de honda se le tornan aristas.

“The arrow cannot make him flee; Slingstones are turned into stubble for him.

29 T iene toda arma por hojarasca, y del blandir de la pica se burla.

“Clubs are regarded as stubble; He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.

30 P or debajo tiene vasos de barro quebrados; imprime su agudez en el suelo.

“His underparts are like sharp potsherds; He spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mire.

31 H ace hervir como una olla el mar profundo, y lo vuelve como una olla de ungüento.

“He makes the depths boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.

32 E n pos de sí hace resplandecer la senda, que parece que el mar es cano.

“Behind him he makes a wake to shine; One would think the deep to be gray-haired.

33 N o hay sobre la tierra su semejante, quien se comporta sin temor.

“ Nothing on earth is like him, One made without fear.

34 M enosprecia toda cosa alta; es rey sobre todos los hijos de la soberbia.

“ He looks on everything that is high; He is king over all the sons of pride.”
