1 E ntão Jó respondeu:

Then Job answered,

2 “ Escutem com atenção as minhas palavras; seja esse o consolo que vocês haverão de dar-me.

“Listen carefully to my speech, And let this be your way of consolation.

3 S uportem-me enquanto eu estiver falando; depois que eu falar poderão zombar de mim.

“Bear with me that I may speak; Then after I have spoken, you may mock.

4 “ Acaso é dos homens que me queixo? Por que não deveria eu estar impaciente?

“As for me, is my complaint to man? And why should I not be impatient?

5 O lhem para mim, e ficarão atônitos; tapem a boca com a mão.

“Look at me, and be astonished, And put your hand over your mouth.

6 Q uando penso nisso, fico aterrorizado; todo o meu corpo se põe a tremer.

“Even when I remember, I am disturbed, And horror takes hold of my flesh.

7 P or que vivem os ímpios? Por que chegam à velhice e aumentam seu poder?

“Why do the wicked still live, Continue on, also become very powerful?

8 E les vêem os seus filhos estabelecidos ao seu redor, e os seus descendentes diante dos seus olhos.

“Their descendants are established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes,

9 S eus lares estão seguros e livres do medo; a vara de Deus não os vem ferir.

Their houses are safe from fear, And the rod of God is not on them.

10 S eus touros nunca deixam de procriar; suas vacas dão crias e não abortam.

“His ox mates without fail; His cow calves and does not abort.

11 E les soltam os seus filhos como um rebanho; seus pequeninos põem-se a dançar.

“They send forth their little ones like the flock, And their children skip about.

12 C antam, acompanhando a música do tamborim e da harpa; alegram-se ao som da flauta.

“They sing to the timbrel and harp And rejoice at the sound of the flute.

13 O s ímpios passam a vida na prosperidade e descem à sepultura em paz.

“They spend their days in prosperity, And suddenly they go down to Sheol.

14 C ontudo, dizem eles a Deus: ‘Deixa-nos! Não queremos conhecer os teus caminhos.

“They say to God, ‘ Depart from us! We do not even desire the knowledge of Your ways.

15 Q uem é o Todo-poderoso, para que o sirvamos? Que vantagem temos em orar a Deus?’

‘ Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, And what would we gain if we entreat Him?’

16 M as não depende deles a prosperidade que desfrutam; por isso fico longe do conselho dos ímpios.

“Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand; The counsel of the wicked is far from me.

17 “ Pois, quantas vezes a lâmpada dos ímpios se apaga? Quantas vezes a desgraça cai sobre eles, o destino que em sua ira Deus lhes dá?

“How often is the lamp of the wicked put out, Or does their calamity fall on them? Does God apportion destruction in His anger?

18 Q uantas vezes o vento os leva como palha, e o furacão os arrebata como cisco?

“Are they as straw before the wind, And like chaff which the storm carries away?

19 D izem que Deus reserva o castigo de um homem para os seus filhos. Que o próprio pai o receba, para que aprenda a lição!

“ You say, ‘ God stores away a man’s iniquity for his sons.’ Let God repay him so that he may know it.

20 Q ue os seus próprios olhos vejam a sua ruína; que ele mesmo beba da ira do Todo-poderoso!

“Let his own eyes see his decay, And let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

21 P ois, que lhe importará a família que deixará atrás de si quando chegarem ao fim os meses que lhe foram destinados?

“For what does he care for his household after him, When the number of his months is cut off?

22 “ Haverá alguém que o ensine a conhecer a Deus, uma vez que ele julga até os de mais alta posição?

“Can anyone teach God knowledge, In that He judges those on high?

23 U m homem morre em pleno vigor, quando se sentia bem e seguro,

“One dies in his full strength, Being wholly at ease and satisfied;

24 t endo o corpo bem nutrido e os ossos cheios de tutano.

His sides are filled out with fat, And the marrow of his bones is moist,

25 J á outro morre tendo a alma amargurada, sem nada ter desfrutado.

While another dies with a bitter soul, Never even tasting anything good.

26 U m e outro jazem no pó, ambos cobertos de vermes.

“Together they lie down in the dust, And worms cover them.

27 “ Sei muito bem o que vocês estão pensando, as suas conspirações contra mim.

“Behold, I know your thoughts, And the plans by which you would wrong me.

28 ‘ Onde está agora a casa do grande homem?’, vocês perguntam. ‘Onde a tenda dos ímpios?’

“For you say, ‘Where is the house of the nobleman, And where is the tent, the dwelling places of the wicked?’

29 V ocês nunca fizeram perguntas aos que viajam? Não deram atenção ao que eles contam?

“Have you not asked wayfaring men, And do you not recognize their witness?

30 P ois eles dizem que o mau é poupado da calamidade, e que do dia da ira recebe livramento.

“For the wicked is reserved for the day of calamity; They will be led forth at the day of fury.

31 Q uem o acusa, lançando em rosto a sua conduta? Quem lhe retribui o mal que fez?

“Who will confront him with his actions, And who will repay him for what he has done?

32 P ois o levam para o túmulo, e vigiam a sua sepultura.

“While he is carried to the grave, Men will keep watch over his tomb.

33 P ara ele é macio o terreno do vale; todos o seguem, e uma multidão incontável o precede.

“The clods of the valley will gently cover him; Moreover, all men will follow after him, While countless ones go before him.

34 “ Por isso, como podem vocês consolar-me com esses absurdos? O que sobra das suas respostas é pura falsidade!”

“How then will you vainly comfort me, For your answers remain full of falsehood?”
