1 M eus irmãos, falo a vocês como a pessoas que conhecem a lei. Acaso vocês não sabem que a lei tem autoridade sobre alguém apenas enquanto ele vive?

Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives?

2 P or exemplo, pela lei a mulher casada está ligada a seu marido enquanto ele estiver vivo; mas, se o marido morrer, ela estará livre da lei do casamento.

For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband.

3 P or isso, se ela se casar com outro homem enquanto seu marido ainda estiver vivo, será considerada adúltera. Mas se o marido morrer, ela estará livre daquela lei, e mesmo que venha a se casar com outro homem, não será adúltera.

So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.

4 A ssim, meus irmãos, vocês também morreram para a Lei, por meio do corpo de Cristo, para pertencerem a outro, àquele que ressuscitou dos mortos, a fim de que venhamos a dar fruto para Deus.

Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.

5 P ois quando éramos controlados pela carne, as paixões pecaminosas despertadas pela Lei atuavam em nosso corpo, de forma que dávamos fruto para a morte.

For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.

6 M as agora, morrendo para aquilo que antes nos prendia, fomos libertados da Lei, para que sirvamos conforme o novo modo do Espírito, e não segundo a velha forma da Lei escrita. A Luta contra o Pecado

But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

7 Q ue diremos então? A Lei é pecado? De maneira nenhuma! De fato, eu não saberia o que é pecado, a não ser por meio da Lei. Pois, na realidade, eu não saberia o que é cobiça, se a Lei não dissesse: “Não cobiçarás”.

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “ You shall not covet.”

8 M as o pecado, aproveitando a oportunidade dada pelo mandamento, produziu em mim todo tipo de desejo cobiçoso. Pois, sem a Lei, o pecado está morto.

But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.

9 A ntes eu vivia sem a Lei, mas quando o mandamento veio, o pecado reviveu, e eu morri.

I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died;

10 D escobri que o próprio mandamento, destinado a produzir vida, na verdade produziu morte.

and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;

11 P ois o pecado, aproveitando a oportunidade dada pelo mandamento, enganou-me e por meio do mandamento me matou.

for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

12 D e fato a Lei é santa, e o mandamento é santo, justo e bom.

So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 E então, o que é bom se tornou em morte para mim? De maneira nenhuma! Mas, para que o pecado se mostrasse como pecado, ele produziu morte em mim por meio do que era bom, de modo que por meio do mandamento ele se mostrasse extremamente pecaminoso.

Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful. The Conflict of Two Natures

14 S abemos que a Lei é espiritual; eu, contudo, não o sou, pois fui vendido como escravo ao pecado.

For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.

15 N ão entendo o que faço. Pois não faço o que desejo, mas o que odeio.

For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.

16 E , se faço o que não desejo, admito que a Lei é boa.

But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.

17 N este caso, não sou mais eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim.

So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

18 S ei que nada de bom habita em mim, isto é, em minha carne. Porque tenho o desejo de fazer o que é bom, mas não consigo realizá-lo.

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.

19 P ois o que faço não é o bem que desejo, mas o mal que não quero fazer, esse eu continuo fazendo.

For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.

20 O ra, se faço o que não quero, já não sou eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim.

But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

21 A ssim, encontro esta lei que atua em mim: Quando quero fazer o bem, o mal está junto a mim.

I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good.

22 N o íntimo do meu ser tenho prazer na Lei de Deus;

For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,

23 m as vejo outra lei atuando nos membros do meu corpo, guerreando contra a lei da minha mente, tornando-me prisioneiro da lei do pecado que atua em meus membros.

but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.

24 M iserável homem que eu sou! Quem me libertará do corpo sujeito a esta morte?

Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?

25 G raças a Deus por Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor! De modo que, com a mente, eu próprio sou escravo da Lei de Deus; mas, com a carne, da lei do pecado.

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
