1 N ow the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

А филистимляни воювали з Ізраїлем. І побігли Ізраїлеві мужі перед филистимлянами, і падали трупами на горі Ґілбоа.

2 T hen the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

І гналися филистимляни за Саулом та за його синами. І повбивали филистимляни Йонатана, і Авінадава, і Малкі-Шуя, Саулових синів...

3 T he battle became fierce against Saul. The archers hit him, and he was wounded by the archers.

І став бій тяжкий для Саула, і лучники кинулися на нього, і він злякався тих лучників.

4 T hen Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and abuse me.” But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it.

І сказав Саул до свого зброєноші: Витягни меча свого, і пробий мене ним, щоб не прийшли ці необрізані, і не знущалися надо мною! Та не хотів зброєноша, бо дуже боявся. Тоді взяв Саул меча та й упав на нього...

5 A nd when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died.

І побачив зброєноша, що помер Саул, і впав і він на меча, та й помер...

6 S o Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

І помер Саул і троє синів його, та ввесь його дім померли разом.

7 A nd when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; then the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

І побачили всі ізраїльтяни, що мешкали в долині, що всі втікають, та що помер Саул та сини його, то покидали свої міста й повтікали, а филистимляни поприходили, й осілися в них...

8 S o it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

І сталося другого дня, і прийшли филистимляни, щоб пообдирати трупи, та й знайшли Саула та синів його, що лежали на горі Ґілбоа.

9 A nd they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among the people.

І вони пообдирали його, і понесли голову його та зброю його, і послали в филистимські краї навколо, щоб сповістити в домах своїх божків та народові.

10 T hen they put his armor in the temple of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

І вони поклали зброю його в домі свого бога, а голову його прибили в домі Даґона.

11 A nd when all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

І почув увесь ґілеадський Явеш про все, що филистимляни зробили Саулові,

12 a ll the valiant men arose and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons; and they brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

і встали всі хоробрі, і понесли Саулове тіло та тіла синів його, і принесли до Явешу, та й поховали їхні кості під дубом в Явеші, і постили сім день.

13 S o Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.

І помер Саул за своє беззаконня, що він ним спроневірився проти Господа через Господнє слово, якого не тримався, а також через те, що питався віщого духа, щоб вивідати,

14 B ut he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

а не вивідував від Господа. І Він убив його, а царство його передав Давидові, Єссеєвому синові.
