1 T he king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South, heard that Israel was coming on the road to Atharim. Then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners.

І почув ханаанеянин, цар Араду, що сидів на полудні, що Ізраїль увійшов дорогою Атарім, і він став воювати з Ізраїлем, і взяв у нього до неволі полонених.

2 S o Israel made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”

І склав Ізраїль обітницю Господеві й сказав: Якщо справді даси Ти народ той у мою руку, то я вчиню їхні міста закляттям.

3 A nd the Lord listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of that place was called Hormah. The Bronze Serpent

І вислухав Господь голос Ізраїлів, і дав йому ханаанеянина, і він учинив закляттям їх та їхні міста, і назвав ім'я тому міста: Хорма.

4 T hen they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way.

І рушили вони з Гор-гори дорогою Червоного моря, щоб обійти едомський край. І підупала душа того народу в тій дорозі.

5 A nd the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.”

І промовляв той народ проти Бога та проти Мойсея: Нащо ви вивели нас із Єгипту, щоб ми повмирали в пустині? Бож нема тут хліба й нема води, а душі нашій обридла ця непридатна їжа.

6 S o the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.

І послав Господь на той народ зміїв сарафів, і вони кусали народ. І померло багато народу з Ізраїля.

7 T herefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

І прийшов народ до Мойсея та й сказав: Згрішили ми, бо говорили проти Господа та проти тебе. Молися до Господа, і нехай Він забере від нас цих зміїв. І молився Мойсей за народ.

8 T hen the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.”

І сказав Господь до Мойсея: Зроби собі сарафа, і вистав його на жердині. І станеться, кожен покусаний, як погляне на нього, то буде жити.

9 S o Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived. From Mount Hor to Moab

І зробив Мойсей мідяного змія, і виставив його на жердині. І сталося, якщо змій покусав кого, то той дивився на мідяного змія і жив!

10 N ow the children of Israel moved on and camped in Oboth.

І рушили Ізраїлеві сини, і таборували в Овоті.

11 A nd they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Ije Abarim, in the wilderness which is east of Moab, toward the sunrise.

І рушили вони з Овоту, і таборували в Ійє-Гааварімі, на пустині, що перед Моавом, від сходу сонця.

12 F rom there they moved and camped in the Valley of Zered.

Звідти вони рушили, і таборували в долині Зереду.

13 F rom there they moved and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

Звідти рушили й таборували на тім боці Арнону в пустині, що виходить із аморейської границі, бо Арнон границя Моаву між Моавом та амореянином.

14 T herefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord: “Waheb in Suphah, The brooks of the Arnon,

Тому розповідається в Книжці воєн Господніх: Вагев у Суфі, і потоки Арнону,

15 A nd the slope of the brooks That reaches to the dwelling of Ar, And lies on the border of Moab.”

і спад потоків, що збочив на місце Ару, і на моавську границю опертий.

16 F rom there they went to Beer, which is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”

А звідти до Бееру. Це той Беер, що про нього сказав Господь до Мойсея: Збери народ, і нехай Я дам їм воду.

17 T hen Israel sang this song: “Spring up, O well! All of you sing to it—

Тоді заспівав був Ізраїль цю пісню: Піднесися, кринице, співайте про неї!

18 T he well the leaders sank, Dug by the nation’s nobles, By the lawgiver, with their staves.” And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah,

Криниця, вельможі копали її, її викопали народні достойники берлом, жезлами своїми. А з Мідбару до Маттани,

19 f rom Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

а з Маттани до Нахаліїлу, а з Нахаліїлу до Бамоту,

20 a nd from Bamoth, in the valley that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah which looks down on the wasteland. King Sihon Defeated

а з Бамоту до долини, що на моавському полі, у верхівки Пісґі, що звернена до пустині.

21 T hen Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

І послав Ізраїль послів до Сигона аморейського царя, говорячи:

22 “ Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into fields or vineyards; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.”

Нехай я перейду в твоїм краї! Ми не збочимо ні на поле, ні на виноградник, не будемо пити води з криниці, ми підемо царською дорогою, аж поки перейдемо землю твою.

23 B ut Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

І не дав Сигон Ізраїлеві перейти в границі його. І зібрав Сигон увесь свій народ, та й вийшов навпроти Ізраїля на пустині, і прибув до Йогці, і воював з Ізраїлем.

24 T hen Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified.

І вдарив його Ізраїль вістрям меча, і посів край його від Арнону аж до Яббоку, аж до синів Аммону, бо Аз границя синів Аммону.

25 S o Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all its villages.

І позабирав Ізраїль усі ті міста. І осів Ізраїль у всіх аморейських містах: у Хешбоні й по всіх залежних містах його.

26 F or Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon.

Бо Хешбон місто Сигона, царя аморейського він; і він воював з першим моавським царем, і забрав увесь його край з його руки аж до Арнону.

27 T herefore those who speak in proverbs say: “Come to Heshbon, let it be built; Let the city of Sihon be repaired.

Тому й розповідають кобзарі: Підіть до Хешбону, нехай він збудується, і хай міцно поставиться місто Сигонове.

28 “ For fire went out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon; It consumed Ar of Moab, The lords of the heights of the Arnon.

Бо вийшов огонь із Хешбону, а полум'я з міста Сигонового, він місто моавське пожер, володарів арнонських висот.

29 W oe to you, Moab! You have perished, O people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, To Sihon king of the Amorites.

Горе тобі, о Моаве, ти згинув, народе Кемошів! Він зробив був синів своїх утікачами, а дочок своїх дав у неволю Сигону, царю аморейському.

30 “ But we have shot at them; Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. Then we laid waste as far as Nophah, Which reaches to Medeba.”

І розбили ми їх, згинув Хешбон до Дівону, і ми попустошили аж до Нофаху, що аж до Медви.

31 T hus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

І Ізраїль осів в аморейському краї.

32 T hen Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there. King Og Defeated

І послав Мойсей розвідати про Язера, і вони здобули його залежні міста, і заволоділи амореянином, що жив там.

33 A nd they turned and went up by the way to Bashan. So Og king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

І повернулись вони, і пішли дорогою Башану. І вийшов Оґ, цар башанський, насупроти них, він та ввесь його народ, на війну до Едреї.

34 T hen the Lord said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, with all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.”

І сказав Господь до Мойсея: Не бійся його, бо в руку твою дав Я його й увесь народ його та край його, і зробиш йому, як зробив ти Сигону, цареві аморейському, що сидів у Хешбоні.

35 S o they defeated him, his sons, and all his people, until there was no survivor left him; and they took possession of his land.

І вони побили його й синів його та ввесь народ його, так що нікого не зосталося. І вони заволоділи краєм його.
