“Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook, Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower?

2 P uoi tu mettergli un giunco nelle narici o forargli la mascella con un uncino?

Can you put a reed through his nose, Or pierce his jaw with a hook?

3 T i farà egli molte suppliche o ti rivolgerà parole dolci?

Will he make many supplications to you? Will he speak softly to you?

4 F arà egli un patto con te, perche tu lo prenda come servo per sempre?

Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him as a servant forever?

5 S cherzerai tu con lui come con un uccello o lo terrai al guinzaglio per le tue fanciulle?

Will you play with him as with a bird, Or will you leash him for your maidens?

6 I tuoi amici faranno con lui splendidi intrattenimenti o lo spartiranno forse tra i mercanti?

Will your companions make a banquet of him? Will they apportion him among the merchants?

7 P uoi tu coprire la sua pelle di dardi o la sua testa con arpioni?

Can you fill his skin with harpoons, Or his head with fishing spears?

8 M ettigli le mani addosso, ti ricorderai del combattimento e non ci riproverai.

Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle— Never do it again!

9 E cco, la speranza di chi l'assale è ingannevole; al solo vederlo uno è atterrito.

Indeed, any hope of overcoming him is false; Shall one not be overwhelmed at the sight of him?

10 N essuno è tanto audace da osare di provocarlo. Chi dunque è in grado di stare fermo davanti a me?

No one is so fierce that he would dare stir him up. Who then is able to stand against Me?

11 C hi mi ha reso per primo un servizio, perché lo debba ripagare? Qualunque cosa sotto tutti i cieli è mia.

Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine.

12 N on passerò sotto silenzio le sue membra, la sua grande forza e la bellezza della sua armatura.

“I will not conceal his limbs, His mighty power, or his graceful proportions.

13 C hi può spogliarlo della sua corazza, e chi può avvicinarlo con una doppia briglia?

Who can remove his outer coat? Who can approach him with a double bridle?

14 C hi può aprire le porte della sua bocca, circondata com'è dal terrore dei suoi denti?

Who can open the doors of his face, With his terrible teeth all around?

15 S uperbe sono le file dei suoi scudi, strettamente saldati come da un sigillo.

His rows of scales are his pride, Shut up tightly as with a seal;

16 L 'uno è cosí vicino all'altro che tra loro non passa neppure l'aria.

One is so near another That no air can come between them;

17 S ono attaccati gli uni agli altri, saldamente uniti insieme, e non possono separarsi,

They are joined one to another, They stick together and cannot be parted.

18 I suoi starnuti danno guizzi di luce e i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell'aurora.

His sneezings flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

19 D alla sua bocca escono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.

Out of his mouth go burning lights; Sparks of fire shoot out.

20 D alle sue narici esce fumo, come da una pentola bollente o da un calderone.

Smoke goes out of his nostrils, As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.

21 I l suo alito incendia carboni e dalla sua bocca escono fiamme.

His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes out of his mouth.

22 L a forza risiede nel suo collo e davanti a lui danza il terrore.

Strength dwells in his neck, And sorrow dances before him.

23 L e parti flosce della sua carne sono ben compatte, sono ben salde su di lui e non si muovono.

The folds of his flesh are joined together; They are firm on him and cannot be moved.

24 I l suo cuore è duro come una pietra, duro come la parte inferiore della macina.

His heart is as hard as stone, Even as hard as the lower millstone.

25 Q uando si rizza, i forti hanno paura, e per il terrore restano smarriti.

When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid; Because of his crashings they are beside themselves.

26 L a spada che lo raggiunge non gli fa nulla, e neppure la lancia, la freccia e il giavellotto.

Though the sword reaches him, it cannot avail; Nor does spear, dart, or javelin.

27 C onsidera il ferro come paglia e il bronzo come legno tarlato.

He regards iron as straw, And bronze as rotten wood.

28 L a freccia non lo mette in fuga; le pietre della fionda per lui diventano stoppia.

The arrow cannot make him flee; Slingstones become like stubble to him.

29 L e mazze gli sembrano paglia, si fa beffe del vibrare della lancia.

Darts are regarded as straw; He laughs at the threat of javelins.

30 A l di sotto ha punte acuminate e lascia come tracce d'erpice sul fango.

His undersides are like sharp potsherds; He spreads pointed marks in the mire.

31 F a bollire l'abisso come una caldaia e fa del mare come un vaso di unguento.

He makes the deep boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a pot of ointment.

32 S i lascia dietro una scia di luce e l'abisso sembra coperto di canizie.

He leaves a shining wake behind him; One would think the deep had white hair.

33 S ulla terra non c'è nulla simile a lui, che è stato fatto senza paura alcuna.

On earth there is nothing like him, Which is made without fear.

34 G uarda in faccia tutti gli esseri alteri; egli è il re su tutte le fiere più superbe».

He beholds every high thing; He is king over all the children of pride.”
