1 N el principio era la Parola e la Parola era presso Dio, e la Parola era Dio.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 E gli (la Parola) era nel principio con Dio.

He was in the beginning with God.

3 T utte le cose sono state fatte per mezzo di lui (la Parola), e senza di lui nessuna delle cose fatte è stata fatta.

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

4 I n lui era la vita e la vita era la luce degli uomini.

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

5 E la luce risplende nelle tenebre e le tenebre non l'hanno compresa.

And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John’s Witness: The True Light

6 V i fu un uomo mandato da Dio, il cui nome era Giovanni,

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 Q uesti venne come testimone per rendere testimonianza alla luce, affinché tutti credessero per mezzo di lui;

This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

8 e gli non era la luce, ma fu mandato per rendere testimonianza della luce.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 E gli (la Parola) era la luce vera, che illumina ogni uomo che viene nel mondo.

That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

10 E gli (la Parola) era nel mondo, e il mondo fu fatto per mezzo di lui, ma il mondo non lo ha conosciuto.

He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

11 E gli è venuto in casa sua, e i suoi non lo hanno ricevuto,

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

12 m a a tutti coloro che lo hanno ricevuto, egli ha dato l'autorità di diventare figli di Dio, a quelli cioè che credono nel suo nome,

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

13 i quali non sono nati da sangue né da volontà di carne, né da volontà di uomo, ma sono nati da Dio.

who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. The Word Becomes Flesh

14 E la Parola si è fatta carne ed ha abitato fra di noi, e noi abbiamo contemplato la sua gloria, come gloria dell'unigenito proceduto dal Padre, piena di grazia e di verità.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 G iovanni testimoniò di lui e gridò, dicendo: «Questi è colui del quale dicevo: Colui che viene dopo di me mi ha preceduto, perché era prima di me.

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”

16 E noi tutti abbiamo ricevuto dalla sua pienezza grazia sopra grazia.

And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

17 P oiché la legge è stata data per mezzo di Mosé, ma la grazia e la verità sono venute per mezzo di Gesú Cristo.

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18 N essuno ha mai visto Dio; l'unigenito Figlio, che è nel seno del Padre, è colui che lo ha fatto conoscere.

No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. A Voice in the Wilderness

19 E questa è la testimonianza di Giovanni, quando i Giudei gli inviarono da Gerusalemme dei sacerdoti e dei leviti per domandargli: «Chi sei tu?».

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

20 E gli lo dichiarò e non lo negò, e dichiarò: «Io non sono il Cristo»,

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

21 A llora essi gli domandarono: «Chi sei dunque? Sei tu Elia?». Egli disse: «Non lo sono!». «Sei tu il profeta?». Ed egli rispose: «No!».

And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

22 E ssi allora gli dissero: «Chi sei tu, affinché diamo una risposta a coloro che ci hanno mandato? Che dici di te stesso?».

Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”

23 E gli rispose: «Io sono la voce di colui che grida nel deserto: Raddrizzate la via del Signore, come disse il profeta Isaia».

He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the L ord,”’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24 O r coloro che erano stati mandati venivano dai farisei;

Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.

25 e ssi gli domandarono e gli dissero: «Perché dunque battezzi, se tu non sei il Cristo, né Elia, né il profeta?».

And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 G iovanni rispose loro. dicendo: «Io battezzo con acqua, ma in mezzo a vo i sta uno che non conoscete.

John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.

27 E gli è colui che viene dopo di me e che mi ha preceduto, a cui io non sono degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei sandali».

It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”

28 Q ueste cose avvennero in Betabara al di là del Giordano, dove Giovanni battezzava.

These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The Lamb of God

29 I l giorno seguente, Giovanni vide Gesú che veniva verso di lui e disse: «Ecco l'Agnello di Dio, che toglie il peccato del mondo!

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

30 Q uesti è colui del quale dissi: "Dopo di me viene un uomo che mi ha preceduto, perché era prima di me"

This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

31 I o non lo conoscevo, perciò sono venuto a battezzare con acqua, affinché egli fosse manifestato in Israele».

I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”

32 E Giovanni testimoniò, dicendo: «Io ho visto lo Spirito scendere dal cielo come una colomba e fermarsi su di lui.

And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

33 I o non lo conoscevo, ma colui che mi mandò a battezzare con acqua mi disse: "Colui sul quale vedrai scendere lo Spirito e fermarsi su di lui, è quello che battezza con lo Spirito Santo".

I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

34 E d io ho visto ed ho attestato che questi è il Figlio di Dio».

And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.” The First Disciples

35 I l giorno seguente, Giovanni era nuovamente là con due dei suoi discepoli.

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.

36 E , fissando lo sguardo su Gesú che passava, disse: «Ecco l'Agnello di Dio».

And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

37 E i due discepoli, avendolo sentito parlare, seguirono Gesú.

The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38 M a Gesú, voltatosi e vedendo che lo seguivano, disse loro: «Che cercate?» Essi gli dissero: «Rabbi (che, tradotto; vuol dire maestro), dove abiti?».

Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”

39 E gli disse loro: «Venite e vedete». Essi dunque andarono e videro dove egli abitava, e stettero con lui quel giorno. Era circa l'ora decima.

He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).

40 A ndrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, era uno dei due che avevano udito questo da Giovanni e avevano seguito Gesú.

One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

41 C ostui trovò per primo suo fratello Simone e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato il Messia che, tradotto, vuol dire: "Il Cristo"»;

He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).

42 e lo condusse da Gesú. Gesú allora, fissandolo, disse: «Tu sei Simone, figlio di Giona; tu sarai chiamato Cefa che vuol dire: sasso».

And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone). Philip and Nathanael

43 I l giorno seguente, Gesú desiderava partire per la Galilea; trovò Filippo e gli disse: «Seguimi».

The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”

44 O r Filippo era di Betsaida, la stessa città di Andrea e di Pietro.

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 F ilippo trovò Natanaele e gli disse: «Abbiamo trovato colui, del quale hanno scritto Mosé nella legge e i profeti: Gesú da Nazareth, il figlio di Giuseppe».

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

46 E Natanaele gli disse: «Può venire qualcosa di buono da Nazaret?». Filippo gli disse: «Vieni e vedi».

And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

47 G esú vide venirgli incontro Natanaele e disse di lui: «Ecco un vero Israelita, in cui non c'è inganno».

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”

48 N atanaele gli disse: «Come fai a conoscermi?». Gesú gli rispose, dicendo: «Ti ho visto quando eri sotto il fico, prima che Filippo ti chiamasse».

Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

49 N atanaele, rispondendogli, disse: «Maestro, tu sei il Figlio di Dio tu sei il re d'Israele».

Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

50 G esú rispose e gli disse: «Poiché ho detto di averti visto sotto il fico, tu credi; vedrai cose maggiori di queste».

Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

51 P oi gli disse: «In verità, in verità io vi dico che da ora in poi vedrete il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e scendere sopra il Figlio dell'uomo».

And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
