1 D opo queste cose, quando l'Ira del re Assuero si fu calmata, egli si ricordò di Vashti, di ciò che essa. Aveva fatto e di quanto era stato deciso a suo riguardo.

After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus subsided, he remembered Vashti, what she had done, and what had been decreed against her.

2 A llora i servi del re che stavano al suo servizio dissero: «Si cerchino per il re fanciulle vergini e di bell'Aspetto

Then the king’s servants who attended him said: “Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king;

3 s tabilisca il re in tutte le province del suo regno dei commissari, i quali radunino tutte le fanciulle vergini e di bell'aspetto nella cittadella di Susa, nella casa delle donne sotto la sorveglianza di Hegai, eunuco del re e guardiano delle donne, che darà loro gli unguenti per purificarsi

and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather all the beautiful young virgins to Shushan the citadel, into the women’s quarters, under the custody of Hegai the king’s eunuch, custodian of the women. And let beauty preparations be given them.

4 L a fanciulla che piacerà al re diventi regina al posto di Vashti». La proposta piacque al re, e cosí fu fatto.

Then let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This thing pleased the king, and he did so.

5 N ella cittadella di Susa c'era un giudeo chiamato Mardocheo, figlio di Jair, figlio di Scimei, figlio di Kish, un Beniaminita,

In Shushan the citadel there was a certain Jew whose name was Mordecai the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite.

6 c he era stato deportato da Gerusalemme, assieme agli esuli portati in cattività con Jeconiah, re di Giuda, da Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia.

Kish had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives who had been captured with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

7 E gli aveva allevato Hadassah, cioè Ester, la figlia di suo zio, perché ella non aveva né padre né madre. La fanciulla era avvenente di forma e di bell'aspetto; alla morte del padre e della madre Mardocheo la prese come sua figlia.

And Mordecai had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman was lovely and beautiful. When her father and mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.

8 Q uando l'ordine del re e il suo editto furono divulgati, e molte fanciulle furono radunate nella cittadella di Susa sotto la sorveglianza di Hegai, anche Ester fu condotta nel palazzo del re sotto la sorveglianza di Hegai, guardiano delle donne.

So it was, when the king’s command and decree were heard, and when many young women were gathered at Shushan the citadel, under the custody of Hegai, that Esther also was taken to the king’s palace, into the care of Hegai the custodian of the women.

9 L a fanciulla gli piacque e si guadagnò il suo favore; cosí egli si affrettò a darle gli unguenti per la purificazione e il suo vitto; inoltre le diede sette donzelle scelte nel palazzo del re e la spostò assieme alle sue donzelle nell'appartamento migliore nella casa delle donne.

Now the young woman pleased him, and she obtained his favor; so he readily gave beauty preparations to her, besides her allowance. Then seven choice maidservants were provided for her from the king’s palace, and he moved her and her maidservants to the best place in the house of the women.

10 E ster non aveva fatto sapere nulla né del suo popolo né del suo paese d'origine, perché Mardocheo le aveva ordinato di non dirlo.

Esther had not revealed her people or family, for Mordecai had charged her not to reveal it.

11 M ardocheo tutti i giorni passeggiava davanti al cortile della casa delle donne per sapere come stava Ester e che cosa si faceva di lei.

And every day Mordecai paced in front of the court of the women’s quarters, to learn of Esther’s welfare and what was happening to her.

12 Q uando veniva il turno per ciascuna fanciulla di entrare dal re Assuero, dopo aver trascorso dodici mesi di preparazione, secondo i regolamenti delle donne, perché cosí erano ultimati i giorni della loro purificazione: sei mesi per ungersi con olio di mirra e sei mesi con aromi e unguenti delle donne per purificarsi,

Each young woman’s turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after she had completed twelve months’ preparation, according to the regulations for the women, for thus were the days of their preparation apportioned: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women.

13 l a fanciulla andava dal re; le si permetteva di portare con sé dalla casa delle donne al palazzo del re tutto quello che chiedeva.

Thus prepared, each young woman went to the king, and she was given whatever she desired to take with her from the women’s quarters to the king’s palace.

14 V i andava la sera e la mattina dopo passava nella seconda casa delle donne sotto la sorveglianza di Shaashgaz, eunuco del re e guardiano delle concubine Ella non tornava piú dal re, a meno che il re la desiderasse ed ella fosse chiamata per nome.

In the evening she went, and in the morning she returned to the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch who kept the concubines. She would not go in to the king again unless the king delighted in her and called for her by name.

15 Q uando giunse per Ester, la figlia di Abihall, zio di Mardocheo, che l'aveva presa con sé come figlia, il turno di andare dal re, ella non chiese nulla se non quello che le fu indicato da Hegai, eunuco del re, guardiano delle donne. Ed Ester si guadagnò il favore di tutti quelli che la vedevano.

Now when the turn came for Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her as his daughter, to go in to the king, she requested nothing but what Hegai the king’s eunuch, the custodian of the women, advised. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her.

16 E ster fu condotta dal re Assuero nel suo palazzo reale il decimo mese, cioè il mese di Tebeth, il settimo anno del suo regno.

So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus, into his royal palace, in the tenth month, which is the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

17 I l re amò Ester piú di tutte le altre donne, ed ella trovò grazia e favore ai suoi occhi piú di tutte le altre fanciulle. Cosí egli le pose in capo la corona reale e la fece regina al posto di Vashti.

The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

18 P oi il re fece un gran banchetto per tutti i suoi principi e servi, il banchetto di Ester, inoltre concesse un giorno di riposo nelle province e fece doni con munificenza regale.

Then the king made a great feast, the Feast of Esther, for all his officials and servants; and he proclaimed a holiday in the provinces and gave gifts according to the generosity of a king. Mordecai Discovers a Plot

19 Q uando le fanciulle si radunarono la seconda volta, Mardocheo stava seduto alla porta del re.

When virgins were gathered together a second time, Mordecai sat within the king’s gate.

20 E ster, secondo l'ordine che Mardocheo le aveva dato, non aveva fatto sapere nulla né del suo paese d'origine né del suo popolo. Ester infatti eseguiva gli ordini di Mardocheo, come quando era sotto la sua tutela, Mardocheo sventa una congiura contro il re

Now Esther had not revealed her family and her people, just as Mordecai had charged her, for Esther obeyed the command of Mordecai as when she was brought up by him.

21 I n quei giorni, come Mardocheo stava seduto alla porta del re, Bightan e Teresh, due eunuchi del re e guardie della soglia, andarono in collera e cercarono di stendere la mano contro il re Assuero.

In those days, while Mordecai sat within the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, doorkeepers, became furious and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.

22 V enuto a conoscenza della cosa, Mardocheo avvertí la regina Ester, ed Ester informò il re a nome di Mardocheo.

So the matter became known to Mordecai, who told Queen Esther, and Esther informed the king in Mordecai’s name.

23 S i fecero indagini e, trovato che la cosa era vera, i due eunuchi furono impiccati sul patibolo; il fatto fu poi registrato nel libro delle Cronache, alla presenza del re.

And when an inquiry was made into the matter, it was confirmed, and both were hanged on a gallows; and it was written in the book of the chronicles in the presence of the king.
