1 T hen Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,

Entonces Jesús habló a la muchedumbre y a Sus discípulos:

2 s aying: “ The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses;

“Los escribas y los Fariseos se han sentado en la cátedra de Moisés.

3 t herefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.

De modo que hagan y observen todo lo que les digan; pero no hagan conforme a sus obras, porque ellos dicen y no hacen.

4 T hey tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.

Atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre las espaldas de los hombres, pero ellos ni con un dedo quieren moverlas.

5 B ut they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.

Sino que hacen todas sus obras para ser vistos por los hombres; pues agrandan sus distintivos religiosos (filacterias) y alargan los adornos (flecos) de sus mantos.

6 T hey love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,

Aman el lugar de honor en los banquetes y los primeros asientos en las sinagogas,

7 a nd respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.

y los saludos respetuosos en las plazas y ser llamados por los hombres Rabí (Maestro).

8 B ut do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.

Pero ustedes no dejen que los llamen Rabí; porque Uno es su Maestro y todos ustedes son hermanos.

9 D o not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.

Y no llamen a nadie padre suyo en la tierra, porque Uno es su Padre, el que está en los cielos.

10 D o not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.

Ni dejen que los llamen preceptores; porque Uno es su Preceptor, Cristo.

11 B ut the greatest among you shall be your servant.

Pero el mayor de ustedes será su servidor.

12 W hoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. Eight Woes

Y cualquiera que se engrandece, será humillado, y cualquiera que se humille, será engrandecido. Ocho Ayes contra los Escribas y Fariseos

13 “ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

“Pero, ¡ay de ustedes, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas que cierran el reino de los cielos delante de los hombres! Porque ni entran ustedes, ni dejan entrar a los que están entrando.

14 ' > Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation. ]

¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas, que devoran las casas de las viudas, aun cuando por pretexto hacen largas oraciones! Por eso recibirán mayor condenación.

15 “ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

“¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas, que recorren el mar y la tierra para hacer un prosélito, y cuando llega a serlo, lo hacen hijo del infierno dos veces más que ustedes!

16 “ Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘ Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.’

“¡Ay de ustedes, guías ciegos! Porque dicen: ‘No es nada si alguien jura por el templo; pero el que jura por el oro del templo, contrae obligación.’

17 Y ou fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?

¡Insensatos y ciegos! Porque ¿qué es más importante: el oro, o el templo que santificó el oro?

18 A nd, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.’

También ustedes dicen: ‘No es nada si alguien jura por el altar; pero el que jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, contrae obligación.’

19 Y ou blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering?

¡Ciegos! Porque ¿qué es más importante: la ofrenda, o el altar que santifica la ofrenda?

20 T herefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it.

Por eso, el que jura por el altar, jura por él y por todo lo que está sobre él;

21 A nd whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it.

y el que jura por el templo, jura por él y por Aquél que en él habita;

22 A nd whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios y por Aquél que está sentado en él.

23 “ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

“¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas que pagan el diezmo de la menta, del anís y del comino, y han descuidado los preceptos más importantes de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad! Estas son las cosas que debían haber hecho, sin descuidar aquéllas.

24 Y ou blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

¡Guías ciegos, que cuelan el mosquito y se tragan el camello!

25 “ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.

“¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas, que limpian el exterior del vaso y del plato, pero por dentro están llenos de robo y de desenfreno!

26 Y ou blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

¡Fariseo ciego! Limpia primero lo de adentro del vaso y del plato, para que lo de afuera también quede limpio.

27 “ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.

“¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas que son semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados! Por fuera lucen hermosos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia.

28 S o you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Así también ustedes, por fuera parecen justos a los hombres, pero por dentro están llenos de hipocresía y de iniquidad.

29 “ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,

“¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! Porque edifican los sepulcros de los profetas y adornan los monumentos de los justos,

30 a nd say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

y dicen: ‘Si nosotros hubiéramos vivido en los días de nuestros padres, no hubiéramos sido sus cómplices en derramar la sangre de los profetas.’

31 S o you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

Así que dan testimonio en contra de ustedes mismos, que son hijos de los que asesinaron a los profetas.

32 F ill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers.

¡Llenen, pues, la medida de la culpa (pecado) de sus padres (terminen, pues, su pecado)!

33 Y ou serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?

¡Serpientes! ¡Camada de víboras! ¿Cómo escaparán del juicio del infierno ?

34 “ Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,

Por tanto, miren, Yo les envío profetas, sabios y escribas. A algunos de ellos, ustedes los matarán y crucificarán, y a otros los azotarán en sus sinagogas y los perseguirán de ciudad en ciudad,

35 s o that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

para que recaiga sobre ustedes la culpa de toda la sangre justa derramada sobre la tierra, desde la sangre del justo Abel hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Berequías, a quien ustedes asesinaron entre el templo y el altar.

36 T ruly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. Lament over Jerusalem

En verdad les digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación. Lamentación sobre Jerusalén

37 “ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

“¡ Jerusalén, Jerusalén, la que mata a los profetas y apedrea a los que son enviados a ella! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus pollitos debajo de sus alas, y no quisiste!

38 B ehold, your house is being left to you desolate!

Por tanto, la casa de ustedes se les deja desierta.

39 F or I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘ Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Porque les digo que desde ahora en adelante no Me verán más hasta que digan: ‘ Bendito Aquel que viene en el nombre del Señor.’”
