1 T hese are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab.

2 I t is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.

Hay once días de camino desde Horeb hasta Cades Barnea por el camino del Monte Seir.

3 I n the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the Lord had commanded him to give to them,

En el año cuarenta, el mes undécimo, el primer día del mes, Moisés habló a los Israelitas conforme a todo lo que el Señor le había ordenado que les diera,

4 a fter he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei.

después de haber derrotado a Sehón, rey de los Amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que habitaba en Astarot y en Edrei.

5 A cross the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law, saying,

Al otro lado del Jordán, en la tierra de Moab, Moisés comenzó a explicar esta ley:

6 “ The Lord our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.

“El Señor nuestro Dios nos habló en Horeb y dijo: ‘Ustedes han permanecido bastante tiempo en este monte.

7 T urn and set your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negev and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

Vuélvanse; pónganse en marcha y vayan a la región montañosa de los Amorreos, y a todos sus vecinos, en el Arabá, en la región montañosa, en el valle, en el Neguev (la región del sur), y por la costa del mar, la tierra de los Cananeos y el Líbano, hasta el gran río, el Río Eufrates.

8 S ee, I have placed the land before you; go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to them and their descendants after them.’

Miren, he puesto la tierra delante de ustedes. Entren y tomen posesión de la tierra que el Señor juró dar a sus padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, a ellos y a su descendencia después de ellos.’ Ayudantes para Moisés

9 “ I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘ I am not able to bear the burden of you alone.

“En aquel tiempo les hablé: ‘Yo solo no puedo llevar la carga de todos ustedes.

10 T he Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day like the stars of heaven in number.

El Señor su Dios los ha multiplicado y hoy son como las estrellas del cielo en multitud.

11 M ay the Lord, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand-fold more than you are and bless you, just as He has promised you!

Que el Señor, el Dios de sus padres, los multiplique mil veces más de lo que son y los bendiga, tal como les ha prometido.

12 H ow can I alone bear the load and burden of you and your strife?

¿Cómo puedo yo solo llevar el peso y la carga de ustedes y sus pleitos?

13 C hoose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’

Escojan de entre sus tribus hombres sabios, entendidos y expertos, y yo los nombraré como sus jefes.’

14 Y ou answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good.’

“Entonces ustedes me respondieron: ‘Bueno es que se haga lo que has dicho.’

15 S o I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them heads over you, leaders of thousands and of hundreds, of fifties and of tens, and officers for your tribes.

Así que tomé a los principales de sus tribus, hombres sabios y expertos, y los nombré como dirigentes suyos: jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez, y oficiales para sus tribus.

16 “ Then I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen, and judge righteously between a man and his fellow countryman, or the alien who is with him.

“En aquella ocasión di órdenes a sus jueces y les dije: ‘Oigan los pleitos entre sus hermanos, y juzguen justamente entre un hombre y su hermano, o el extranjero que está con él.

17 Y ou shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not fear man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’

No mostrarán parcialidad en el juicio; lo mismo oirán al pequeño que al grande. No tendrán temor del hombre, porque el juicio es de Dios. El caso que sea muy difícil para ustedes, me lo traerán a mí, y yo lo oiré.’

18 I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do.

En aquella misma ocasión les mandé todas las cosas que debían hacer. Misión de los Doce Espías

19 “ Then we set out from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, just as the Lord our God had commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

“ Entonces salimos de Horeb y pasamos por todo aquel vasto y terrible desierto que ustedes vieron, camino de la región montañosa de los Amorreos, tal como el Señor nuestro Dios nos había mandado, y llegamos a Cades Barnea.

20 I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites which the Lord our God is about to give us.

Y les dije: ‘Han llegado a la región montañosa de los Amorreos que el Señor nuestro Dios nos va a dar.

21 S ee, the Lord your God has placed the land before you; go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’

Mira, Israel, el Señor tu Dios ha puesto la tierra delante de ti; sube, toma posesión de ella, como el Señor, el Dios de tus padres, te ha dicho. No temas ni te acobardes.’

22 “ Then all of you approached me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may search out the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we should go up and the cities which we shall enter.’

“Entonces todos ustedes se acercaron a mí, y dijeron: ‘Enviemos hombres delante de nosotros, que nos exploren la tierra, y nos traigan noticia del camino por el cual hemos de subir y de las ciudades a las cuales entraremos.’

23 T he thing pleased me and I took twelve of your men, one man for each tribe.

“Me agradó el plan, y tomé a doce hombres de entre ustedes, un hombre por cada tribu.

24 T hey turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol and spied it out.

Ellos salieron y subieron a la región montañosa, y llegaron hasta el Valle de Escol, y reconocieron la tierra.

25 T hen they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought us back a report and said, ‘It is a good land which the Lord our God is about to give us.’

Entonces tomaron en sus manos del fruto de la tierra y nos lo trajeron; y nos dieron un informe y dijeron: ‘Es una tierra buena que el Señor nuestro Dios nos da.’

26 “ Yet you were not willing to go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God;

“Sin embargo, ustedes no quisieron subir, y se rebelaron contra el mandato del Señor su Dios.

27 a nd you grumbled in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.

Murmuraron en sus tiendas y dijeron: ‘Porque el Señor nos aborrece, nos ha sacado de la tierra de Egipto para entregarnos en manos de los Amorreos y destruirnos.

28 W here can we go up? Our brethren have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified to heaven. And besides, we saw the sons of the Anakim there.”’

‘¿Adónde subiremos? Nuestros hermanos nos han atemorizado, diciendo: “El pueblo es más grande y más alto que nosotros; las ciudades son grandes y fortificadas hasta el cielo. Y además vimos allí a los hijos de Anac.”’

29 T hen I said to you, ‘Do not be shocked, nor fear them.

“Entonces yo les dije: ‘No teman ni les tengan miedo.

30 T he Lord your God who goes before you will Himself fight on your behalf, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

El Señor su Dios, que va delante de ustedes, El peleará por ustedes, así como lo hizo delante de sus ojos en Egipto

31 a nd in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have walked until you came to this place.’

y en el desierto, donde has visto cómo el Señor tu Dios te llevó, como un hombre lleva a su hijo, por todo el camino que anduvieron hasta llegar a este lugar.’

32 B ut for all this, you did not trust the Lord your God,

Pero con todo esto, ustedes no confiaron en el Señor su Dios,

33 w ho goes before you on your way, to seek out a place for you to encamp, in fire by night and cloud by day, to show you the way in which you should go.

que iba delante de ustedes en el camino para buscarles lugar dónde acampar, con fuego de noche y nube de día, para mostrarles el camino por donde debían andar. El Castigo de Dios

34 “ Then the Lord heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and took an oath, saying,

“ Entonces el Señor oyó la voz de las palabras de ustedes, y se enojó y juró:

35 ‘ Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers,

‘Ninguno de estos hombres, esta generación perversa, verá la buena tierra que juré dar a sus padres,

36 e xcept Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and to his sons I will give the land on which he has set foot, because he has followed the Lord fully.’

excepto Caleb, hijo de Jefone; él la verá, y a él y a sus hijos daré la tierra que ha pisado, pues él ha seguido fielmente al Señor.’

37 T he Lord was angry with me also on your account, saying, ‘ Not even you shall enter there.

“El Señor se enojó también contra mí por causa de ustedes y dijo: ‘Tampoco tú entrarás allá.

38 J oshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall enter there; encourage him, for he will cause Israel to inherit it.

Josué, hijo de Nun, que está delante de ti, él entrará allá; anímale, porque él hará que Israel la posea.

39 M oreover, your little ones who you said would become a prey, and your sons, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them and they shall possess it.

Además, en cuanto a los pequeños, que ustedes dijeron que vendrían a ser presa, y sus hijos, que hoy no tienen conocimiento del bien ni del mal, entrarán allá, y a ellos les daré la tierra y ellos la poseerán.

40 B ut as for you, turn around and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.’

Pero ustedes, vuélvanse y vayan hacia el desierto por el camino del Mar Rojo.’

41 “ Then you said to me, ‘We have sinned against the Lord; we will indeed go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every man of you girded on his weapons of war, and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country.

“ Entonces ustedes respondieron: ‘Hemos pecado contra el Señor; nosotros subiremos y pelearemos tal como el Señor nuestro Dios nos ha mandado.’ Y cada uno de ustedes se puso sus armas de guerra, y pensaron que era fácil subir a la región montañosa.

42 A nd the Lord said to me, ‘Say to them, “Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be defeated before your enemies.”’

Pero el Señor me dijo: ‘Diles: “No suban, ni peleen, pues Yo no estoy entre ustedes; para que no sean derrotados por sus enemigos.”’

43 S o I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead you rebelled against the command of the Lord, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country.

Así les hablé, pero no quisieron escuchar. Al contrario, se rebelaron contra el mandamiento del Señor, y obraron con orgullo, y subieron a la región montañosa.

44 T he Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do, and crushed you from Seir to Hormah.

Los Amorreos que moraban en aquella región montañosa salieron contra ustedes, y los persiguieron como lo hacen las abejas, y los derrotaron desde Seir hasta Horma.

45 T hen you returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.

Entonces volvieron y lloraron delante del Señor, pero el Señor no escuchó su voz, ni les hizo caso.

46 S o you remained in Kadesh many days, the days that you spent there.

Por eso ustedes permanecieron en Cades muchos días, los días que pasaron allí.
