1 N ow the famine was severe in the land.

El hambre iba agravándose en la tierra.

2 S o it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, “Go back, buy us a little food.”

Y cuando acabaron de comer el grano que habían traído de Egipto, su padre les dijo: “Vuelvan allá y cómprennos un poco de alimento.”

3 J udah spoke to him, however, saying, “ The man solemnly warned us, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’

Pero Judá le respondió: “Aquel hombre claramente nos advirtió: ‘No verán mi rostro si su hermano no está con ustedes.’

4 I f you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

Si envías a nuestro hermano con nosotros, descenderemos y compraremos alimento.

5 B ut if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.’”

Pero si no lo envías, no descenderemos. Porque el hombre nos dijo: ‘No verán mi rostro si su hermano no está con ustedes.’”

6 T hen Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had another brother?”

Entonces Israel respondió: “¿Por qué me han tratado tan mal, informando al hombre que tenían un hermano más?”

7 B ut they said, “The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, ‘ Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”

Pero ellos dijeron: “El hombre nos preguntó específicamente acerca de nosotros y nuestros familiares, diciendo: ‘¿Vive aún su padre? ¿Tienen otro hermano?’ Y nosotros contestamos sus preguntas. ¿Acaso podíamos nosotros saber que él diría: ‘Traigan a su hermano’?”

8 J udah said to his father Israel, “Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.

Y Judá dijo a su padre Israel: “Envía al muchacho conmigo. Nos levantaremos e iremos, para que vivamos y no perezcamos, tanto nosotros como tú y nuestros pequeños.

9 I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.

Yo me haré responsable (fiador) de él. De mi mano lo demandarás. Si yo no te lo vuelvo a traer y lo pongo delante de ti, que lleve yo la culpa para siempre delante de ti.

10 F or if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice.”

Porque si no hubiéramos perdido tiempo, sin duda ya habríamos regresado por segunda vez.”

11 T hen their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

Entonces su padre Israel les dijo: “Si así tiene que ser, hagan esto: tomen de los mejores productos de la tierra en sus vasijas, y lleven a aquel hombre como presente un poco de bálsamo y un poco de miel, resina aromática y mirra, nueces y almendras.

12 T ake double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

Y tomen doble cantidad de dinero en su mano, y lleven de nuevo en su mano el dinero que fue devuelto en la boca de sus costales. Tal vez fue un error.

13 T ake your brother also, and arise, return to the man;

Tomen también a su hermano, levántense y vuelvan a aquel hombre.

14 a nd may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”

Que el Dios Todopoderoso les conceda misericordia ante aquel hombre para que ponga en libertad a su otro hermano y a Benjamín. En cuanto a mí, si he de ser privado de mis hijos, que así sea.”

15 S o the men took this present, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. Joseph Sees Benjamin

Tomaron, pues, los hombres este presente, doble cantidad de dinero en su mano y a Benjamín. Se levantaron y descendieron a Egipto y se presentaron delante de José. José y Benjamín

16 W hen Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to his house steward, “Bring the men into the house, and slay an animal and make ready; for the men are to dine with me at noon.”

Cuando José vio a Benjamín con ellos, dijo al mayordomo de su casa: “Haz entrar a estos hombres a casa, y mata un animal y prepára lo, porque estos hombres comerán conmigo al mediodía.”

17 S o the man did as Joseph said, and brought the men to Joseph’s house.

El hombre hizo como José le dijo, y llevó a los hombres a casa de José.

18 N ow the men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “ It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time that we are being brought in, that he may seek occasion against us and fall upon us, and take us for slaves with our donkeys.”

Ellos tenían miedo porque eran llevados a casa de José y dijeron: “Por causa del dinero que fue devuelto en nuestros costales la primera vez hemos sido traídos aquí, para tener pretexto contra nosotros y caer sobre nosotros y tomarnos por esclavos con nuestros asnos.”

19 S o they came near to Joseph’s house steward, and spoke to him at the entrance of the house,

Entonces se acercaron al mayordomo de la casa de José, y le hablaron a la entrada de la casa,

20 a nd said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food,

y dijeron: “Oh señor mío, ciertamente descendimos la primera vez para comprar alimentos.

21 a nd it came about when we came to the lodging place, that we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full. So we have brought it back in our hand.

Y cuando llegamos a la posada, abrimos nuestros costales, y el dinero de cada uno estaba en la boca de su costal, todo nuestro dinero. Así que lo hemos vuelto a traer en nuestra mano.

22 W e have also brought down other money in our hand to buy food; we do not know who put our money in our sacks.”

También hemos traído otro dinero en nuestra mano para comprar alimentos. No sabemos quién puso nuestro dinero en nuestros costales.”

23 H e said, “ Be at ease, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.

Y el mayordomo les dijo: “No se preocupen, no teman. El Dios de ustedes y el Dios de su padre les ha dado ese tesoro en sus costales. Yo haré constar que recibí el dinero de ustedes.” Entonces les sacó a Simeón.

24 T hen the man brought the men into Joseph’s house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys fodder.

Después el hombre llevó a los hombres a casa de José, y les dio agua y se lavaron los pies. También dio forraje a sus asnos.

25 S o they prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon; for they had heard that they were to eat a meal there.

Entonces prepararon el presente para la venida de José al mediodía, pues habían oído que iban a comer allí.

26 W hen Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present which was in their hand and bowed to the ground before him.

Cuando José regresó a su casa, ellos le trajeron a la casa el presente que traían en su mano y se postraron ante él en tierra.

27 T hen he asked them about their welfare, and said, “ Is your old father well, of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”

Entonces él les preguntó cómo se encontraban, y añadió: “¿Cómo está su anciano padre de quien me hablaron? ¿Vive todavía ?”

28 T hey said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” They bowed down in homage.

“Su siervo nuestro padre está bien; todavía vive,” contestaron. Y ellos se inclinaron en reverencia.

29 A s he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, he said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” And he said, “ May God be gracious to you, my son.”

Al alzar José sus ojos y ver a su hermano Benjamín, hijo de su madre, les preguntó: “¿Es éste su hermano menor de quien me hablaron ?” Y dijo: “Dios te imparta Su favor, hijo mío.”

30 J oseph hurried out for he was deeply stirred over his brother, and he sought a place to weep; and he entered his chamber and wept there.

José se apresuró a salir, pues se sintió profundamente conmovido a causa de su hermano y buscó dónde llorar. Entró en su aposento y lloró allí.

31 T hen he washed his face and came out; and he controlled himself and said, “ Serve the meal.”

Después se lavó la cara y salió, y controlándose, dijo: “Sirvan la comida.”

32 S o they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is loathsome to the Egyptians.

Le sirvieron a José en un lado, a los hermanos en otro lado, y a los Egipcios que comían con él, también les sirvieron aparte. Porque los Egipcios no podían comer con los Hebreos, pues esto es abominación para los Egipcios.

33 N ow they were seated before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth, and the men looked at one another in astonishment.

Los sentaron delante de él, el primogénito conforme a su derecho de primogenitura, y el más joven conforme a su edad. Ellos se miraban unos a otros con asombro.

34 H e took portions to them from his own table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. So they feasted and drank freely with him.

El les llevó porciones de su propia mesa, pero la porción de Benjamín era cinco veces mayor que la de cualquiera de ellos. Bebieron, pues, y se alegraron con él.
