1 N ow there was a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to Abimelech king of the Philistines.

Y hubo hambre en la tierra, además del hambre anterior que había ocurrido durante los días de Abraham. Entonces Isaac se fue a Gerar, donde vivía Abimelec, rey de los Filisteos.

2 T he Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the land of which I shall tell you.

El Señor se le apareció a Isaac y le dijo: “No desciendas a Egipto. Quédate en la tierra que Yo te diré.

3 S ojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham.

Reside en esta tierra y Yo estaré contigo y te bendeciré, porque a ti y a tu descendencia daré todas estas tierras, y confirmaré contigo el juramento que juré a tu padre Abraham.

4 I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

Multiplicaré tu descendencia como las estrellas del cielo, y daré a tu descendencia todas estas tierras. En tu simiente serán bendecidas todas las naciones de la tierra,

5 b ecause Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My laws.”

porque Abraham Me obedeció, y guardó Mi ordenanza, Mis mandamientos, Mis estatutos y Mis leyes.” Isaac Engaña a Abimelec

6 S o Isaac lived in Gerar.

Habitó, pues, Isaac en Gerar.

7 W hen the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “ She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “ the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is beautiful.”

Cuando los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaron acerca de su mujer, Isaac dijo: “Es mi hermana ”; porque tenía temor de decir: “Es mi mujer.” Porque pensaba: “no sea que los hombres del lugar me maten por causa de Rebeca, pues es de hermosa apariencia.”

8 I t came about, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out through a window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was caressing his wife Rebekah.

Y sucedió que después de haber estado ellos allí largo tiempo, Abimelec, rey de los Filisteos, miró por una ventana y vio a Isaac acariciando a Rebeca su mujer.

9 T hen Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, certainly she is your wife! How then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘I might die on account of her.’”

Entonces Abimelec llamó a Isaac, y le dijo: “Ciertamente ella es tu mujer. ¿Por qué, pues, dijiste: ‘Es mi hermana’?” “Porque me dije: ‘No sea que yo muera por causa de ella’” respondió Isaac.

10 A bimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

Y Abimelec dijo: “¿Qué es esto que nos has hecho ? Porque alguien del pueblo fácilmente pudiera haberse acostado con tu mujer, y hubieras traído culpa sobre nosotros.”

11 S o Abimelech charged all the people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

Abimelec ordenó a todo el pueblo: “El que toque a este hombre o a su mujer, de cierto morirá.” Bendición de Dios sobre Isaac

12 N ow Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. And the Lord blessed him,

Isaac sembró en aquella tierra, y cosechó aquel año ciento por uno. Y el Señor lo bendijo.

13 a nd the man became rich, and continued to grow richer until he became very wealthy;

Isaac se enriqueció, y siguió engrandeciéndose hasta que llegó a ser muy poderoso,

14 f or he had possessions of flocks and herds and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him.

porque tenía rebaños de ovejas, vacas y mucha servidumbre, y los Filisteos le tenían envidia.

15 N ow all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped up by filling them with earth.

Todos los pozos que los siervos de su padre habían cavado en los días de su padre Abraham, los Filisteos los cegaron llenándolos de tierra.

16 T hen Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are too powerful for us.”

Entonces Abimelec dijo a Isaac: “Vete de aquí, porque tú eres mucho más poderoso que nosotros.”

17 A nd Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar, and settled there. Quarrel over the Wells

Isaac se fue de allí, acampó en el Valle de Gerar y se estableció (habitó) allí.

18 T hen Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he gave them the same names which his father had given them.

Isaac volvió a cavar los pozos de agua que habían sido cavados en los días de su padre Abraham, porque los Filisteos los habían cegado después de la muerte de Abraham, y les puso los mismos nombres que su padre les había puesto.

19 B ut when Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of flowing water,

Cuando los siervos de Isaac cavaron en el valle encontraron allí un pozo de aguas vivas.

20 t he herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they contended with him.

Entonces riñeron los pastores de Gerar con los pastores de Isaac, diciendo: “El agua es nuestra.” Por eso él llamó al pozo Esek (Riña), porque habían reñido con él.

21 T hen they dug another well, and they quarreled over it too, so he named it Sitnah.

Cavaron otro pozo, y también riñeron por él; por eso lo llamó Sitna (Enemistad).

22 H e moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it; so he named it Rehoboth, for he said, “ At last the Lord has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”

Y se trasladó de allí y cavó otro pozo, y no riñeron por él; por eso lo llamó Rehobot (Lugares amplios), porque dijo: “Al fin el Señor ha hecho lugar para nosotros, y prosperaremos en la tierra.”

23 T hen he went up from there to Beersheba.

De allí Isaac subió a Beerseba.

24 T he Lord appeared to him the same night and said, “ I am the God of your father Abraham; Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you, and multiply your descendants, For the sake of My servant Abraham.”

El Señor se le apareció aquella misma noche y le dijo: “Yo soy el Dios de tu padre Abraham; No temas, porque Yo estoy contigo. Y te bendeciré y multiplicaré tu descendencia, Por amor de Mi siervo Abraham.”

25 S o he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well. Covenant with Abimelech

Y allí Isaac construyó un altar e invocó el nombre del Señor y plantó allí su tienda; y allí abrieron los siervos de Isaac un pozo. Pacto entre Isaac y Abimelec

26 T hen Abimelech came to him from Gerar with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army.

Entonces Abimelec vino a él desde Gerar, con su consejero Ahuzat y con Ficol, jefe de su ejército.

27 I saac said to them, “ Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?”

Y les dijo Isaac: “¿Por qué han venido a mí, ustedes que me odian y me han echado de entre ustedes ?”

28 T hey said, “We see plainly that the Lord has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you,

Y ellos respondieron: “Vemos claramente que el Señor ha estado contigo, así es que dijimos: ‘Haya ahora un juramento entre nosotros, entre tú y nosotros, y hagamos un pacto contigo,

29 t hat you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.’”

de que no nos harás ningún mal, así como nosotros no te hemos tocado y sólo te hemos hecho bien, y te hemos despedido en paz. Tú eres ahora el bendito del Señor.’”

30 T hen he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

Entonces él les preparó un banquete, y comieron y bebieron.

31 I n the morning they arose early and exchanged oaths; then Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in peace.

Muy de mañana se levantaron y se hicieron mutuo juramento. Entonces Isaac los despidió y ellos se fueron de su lado en paz.

32 N ow it came about on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”

Aquel mismo día los siervos de Isaac llegaron y le informaron acerca del pozo que habían cavado, y le dijeron: “Hemos hallado agua.”

33 S o he called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

Y lo llamó Seba (Juramento). Por eso el nombre de la ciudad es Beerseba (Pozo del Juramento) hasta hoy.

34 W hen Esau was forty years old he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite;

Cuando Esaú tenía cuarenta años, se casó con Judit, hija de Beeri, el Hitita, y con Basemat, hija de Elón, el Hitita;

35 a nd they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

y ellas hicieron la vida insoportable para Isaac y Rebeca.
