1 E phraim herds and feeds on the wind and pursues the east wind; every day he increases lies and violence, and a covenant is made with Assyria and oil is carried to Egypt.

(12-2) Єфрем пасе вітра й женеться за вітром із сходу. Неправду й руїну розмножує він кожного дня, умову складають з Ашшуром, олива ж несеться в Єгипет.

2 T he Lord has also a controversy (a pleading contention) with Judah, and will punish Jacob by visiting upon him according to his ways; according to his doings will He recompense him.

(12-3) Та в Господа з Юдою пря, і Якова Він навістить за путями його, за ділами його йому зверне.

3 H e took his brother by the heel in womb, and in the strength he contended and had power with God.

(12-4) Він в утробі тримав за п'яту свого брата, а в силі своїй він боровся із Богом,

4 Y es, he had power over the Angel and prevailed; he wept and sought His favor. He met Him in Bethel, and there spoke with us—

(12-5) і боровся він з Анголом, та й переміг. Плакав він, і благав він Його, у Бет-Елі знайшов Він його, і там з нами говорить.

5 E ven the Lord the God of hosts, the name of Him is the Lord.

(12-6) А Господь Бог Саваот, Його Ймення Господь.

6 T herefore return to your God! Hold fast to love and mercy, to righteousness and justice, and wait for your God continually!

(12-7) А ти через Бога свого навернешся, стережи милість та суд, і завжди надійся на Бога свого!

7 C anaan is a trader; the balances of deceit are in his hand; he loves to oppress and defraud.

(12-8) Немов Ханаан, у нього в руці неправдива вага, любить він кривду чинити.

8 E phraim has said, Ah, but I have become rich; I have gained for myself wealth. All my profits shall bring on me no iniquity that would be sin.

(12-9) І каже Єфрем: Справді я збагатився, знайшов я маєток собі! У всіх моїх чинах не знайдуть провини мені, що гріхом би була.

9 B ut I am the Lord your God from the land of Egypt will yet make you to dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed and solemn Feast.

(12-10) А Я Господь, Бог твій від краю єгипетського, ще в наметах тебе посаджу, немов за днів свята.

10 I have also spoken to the prophets, and I have multiplied visions and through parables acted out by the prophets.

(12-11) І Я говорив до пророків, і видіння розмножив, і через пророків Я притчі казав.

11 I f Gilead is given over to idolatry, they shall come to nought and be mere waste; if they sacrificing bullocks in Gilgal, their altars shall be like heaps in the furrows of the fields.

(12-12) Хіба беззаконня лишив Ґілеад, і марнотою стались лиш там? У Ґілґалі приносили в жертву волів, а їхні жертівники мов ті купи каміння на борознах пільних.

12 J acob fled into the open country of Aram or Padan-aram, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he herded sheep.

(12-13) І втік Яків на поле Арама, а Ізраїль за жінку робив, і за жінку отару стеріг.

13 A nd by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was preserved.

(12-14) І через пророка Господь із Єгипту Ізраїля вивів, і пророком стережений був він.

14 E phraim has provoked most bitter anger; therefore shall his blood be left upon him, and his disgrace and reproach shall his Lord return upon him.

(12-15) Єфрем Господа гірко розгнівав, і тому його вчинки криваві Він лишить на ньому, і поверне йому його сором.
