1 N ow the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,

І було слово Господнє до Йони, Аміттаєвого сина, таке:

2 A rise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.

Устань, іди до Ніневії, великого міста, і проповідуй проти нього, бо їхнє зло прийшло перед лице Моє.

3 B ut Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from being in the presence of the Lord and went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the appointed fare and went down into the ship to go with them to Tarshish from being in the presence of the Lord.

І встав Йона, щоб утекти до Таршішу з-перед Господнього лиця. І зійшов він до Яфи, і знайшов корабля, що йшов до Таршішу, і дав заплату його, і ввійшов у нього, щоб відплисти з ними до Таршішу з-перед Господнього лиця.

4 B ut the Lord sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a violent tempest on the sea so that the ship was about to be broken.

А Господь кинув сильного вітра на море, і знялася на морі велика буря, і вже думали, що корабель буде розбитий.

5 T hen the mariners were afraid, and each man cried to his god; and they cast the goods that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.

І налякалися моряки, і кликали кожен до своїх богів, і викидали ті речі, що були на кораблі, до моря, щоб полегшити себе. А Йона зійшов до споду корабля, і ліг, і заснув.

6 S o the captain came and said to him, What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call upon your God! Perhaps your God will give a thought to us so that we shall not perish.

І приступив до нього керівник корабля, та й сказав йому: Чого ти спиш? Уставай, заклич до свого Бога, може згадає цей Бог про нас, і ми не згинемо.

7 A nd they each said to one another, Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us. So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

І сказали вони один до одного: Ідіть, і киньмо жеребки, та й пізнаємо, через кого нам оце лихо. І кинули вони жеребки, і впав жеребок на Йону.

8 T hen they said to him, Tell us, we pray you, on whose account has this evil come upon us? What is your occupation? Where did you come from? And what is your country and nationality?

І сказали до нього: Об'яви ж нам, через що нам це лихо? Яке твоє зайняття, і звідки ти йдеш? Який твій край, і з якого ти народу?

9 A nd he said to them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear and worship the Lord, the God of heaven, Who made the sea and the dry land.

І сказав він до них: Я єврей, і боюся я Господа, Небесного Бога, що вчинив море та суходіл.

10 T hen the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, What is this that you have done? For the men knew that he fled from being in the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

І налякалися ті люди великим страхом, і сказали до нього: Що це ти наробив? Бо ці люди довідалися, що він утікає з-перед Господнього лиця, бо він це їм об'явив.

11 T hen they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may subside and be calm for us? For the sea became more and more tempestuous.

І вони сказали до нього: Що ми зробимо тобі, щоб утихомирилось море, щоб не заливало нас? Бо море бушувало все більше.

12 A nd said to them, Take me up and cast me into the sea; so shall the sea become calm for you, for I know that it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.

І сказав він до них: Візьміть мене, і киньте мене до моря, і втихомириться море перед вами; бо я знаю, що через мене оця велика буря на вас.

13 N evertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship to the land, but they could not, for the sea became more and more violent against them.

І міцно гребли ці люди, щоб дістатися до суходолу, та не могли, бо море бушувало все більш проти них.

14 T herefore they cried to the Lord, We beseech You, O Lord, we beseech You, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.

І вони кликнули до Господа та й сказали: О Господи, нехай же не згинемо ми за душу цього чоловіка, і не давай на нас неповинної крови, бо Ти, Господи, чиниш, як бажаєш!

15 S o they took up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

І підняли вони Йону, і кинули його до моря, і спинилося море від своєї лютости.

16 T hen the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

І налякалися ці люди Господа великим страхом, і приносили Господеві жертви, і складали обітниці.

17 N ow the Lord had prepared and appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

(2-1) І призначив Господь велику рибу, щоб вона проковтнула Йону. І був Йона в середині цієї риби три дні та три ночі.
