1 B ut David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any more within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.

І сказав Давид у серці своїм: Колись я попадуся в Саулову руку. Нема мені ліпшого, як, утікаючи, утечу до филистимського краю, і відмовиться від мене Саул, щоб шукати мене вже по всій Ізраїлевій країні, і я втечу від руки його.

2 S o David arose and went over with the 600 men who were with him to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath.

І встав Давид, і перейшов він та шість сотень чоловіка, що з ним, до Ахіша, Маохового сина, ґатського царя.

3 A nd David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, and David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow.

І осівся Давид з Ахішем у Ґаті, він та люди його, кожен із домом своїм, Давид та дві жінки його: ізреелітка Ахіноан та Авіґаїл, колишня жінка Навалова, кармелітка.

4 W hen it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he sought for him no more.

І донесено Саулові, що Давид утік до Ґату, і він більш уже не шукав його.

5 A nd David said to Achish, If I have now found favor in your eyes, let me be given a place to dwell in some country town; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?

А Давид сказав до Ахіша: Якщо я знайшов милість в очах твоїх, нехай дадуть мені місце в одному з міст цієї землі, і нехай я осяду там. І чого сидітиме раб твій у місті твого царства разом із тобою?

6 T hen Achish gave David the town of Ziklag that day. Therefore Ziklag belongs to the kings of Judah to this day.

І дав йому Ахіш того дня Ціклаґ, чому належить Ціклаґ Юдиним царям аж до цього дня.

7 T he time David dwelt in the Philistines’ country was a year and four months.

А число днів, що Давид сидів на филистимській землі, було рік та чотири місяці.

8 N ow David and his men went up and made attacks on the Geshurites, Girzites, and Amalekites. For from of old those nations inhabited the land, as one goes to Shur even to the land of Egypt.

І сходив Давид та люди його, і нападали на Ґешуреянина, і на Ґірзеянина, і на Амаликитянина, бо вони мешканці цього краю відвіку, аж доти, як іти до Шуру, і аж до єгипетського краю.

9 A nd David smote the land and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, oxen, donkeys, camels, and the apparel, and returned to Achish.

І побивав Давид той край, і не лишав при житті ані чоловіка, ані жінки, і забирав худобу дрібну та худобу велику, і осли, і верблюди, і одежу, і вертався, і приходив до Ахіша.

10 A chish would ask, Against whom have you made a raid today? And David would reply, Against the South (Negeb) of Judah, or of the Jerahmeelites, or of the Kenites.

І питався Ахіш: На кого нападали ви сьогодні? А Давид казав: На південь Юдин, і на південь Єрахмеелеянина, і на південь Кенеянина.

11 A nd David saved neither man nor woman alive to bring tidings to Gath, thinking, Lest they should say about us, So did David, and so will he do as long as he dwells in the Philistines’ country.

А Давид не лишав при житті ані чоловіка, ані жінки, щоб привести до Ґату, говорячи: Щоб не донесли на нас, кажучи: Так зробив Давид, і такий його звичай по всі дні, коли сидів на филистимській землі.

12 A nd Achish believed David, saying, He has made his people Israel utterly abhor him; so he shall be my servant always.

І вірив Ахіш Давидові, говорячи: Справді обриднув він своєму народові в Ізраїлі, і буде мені за вічного раба!
