1 T he Lord said to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan near Jericho,

Domnul i-a vorbit lui Moise în câmpiile Moabului, lângă Iordan, în faţa Ierihonului:

2 “ Tell the people of Israel to give the Levites cities to live in from the land they receive. And give the Levites fields around the cities.

„Porunceşte-le israeliţilor să dea leviţilor, din moştenirea pe care o vor avea, nişte cetăţi în care să poată locui. Să le mai dea şi păşuni în jurul acestor cetăţi.

3 T he cities will be theirs to live in. Their fields will be for their cattle and flocks and for all their animals.

Cetăţile să fie ale lor, ca să locuiască în ele, iar păşunile să fie pentru vitele, turmele şi celelalte animale ale lor.

4 T he fields you give the Levites should be around the cities, from the city walls out 500 long steps.

Păşunile din jurul cetăţilor pe care le veţi da leviţilor să aibă, începând de la zidul exterior al cetăţii, o mie de coţi de jur-împrejur.

5 A nd you should number 1, 000 long steps from the city on the east side, on the south side, on the west side, and on the north side, with the city in the center. These fields around the cities will belong to them for their animals.

În afara cetăţii să număraţi două mii de coţi în partea de răsărit, două mii de coţi în partea de apus, două mii de coţi în partea de nord şi două mii de coţi în partea de sud, astfel încât cetatea să fie în mijloc. Acestea să fie păşunile lor din jurul cetăţilor lor.

6 T he cities you give the Levites will be the six cities where people can go to be safe. They will be where a man may run to if he has killed another person. And give them forty-two other cities, added to these.

Şase din cetăţile pe care le veţi da leviţilor să fie cetăţi de refugiu, în care să poată fugi ucigaşul. Pe lângă acestea să le mai daţi patruzeci şi două de cetăţi.

7 G ive forty-eight cities in all to the Levites, together with their fields.

Astfel, toate cetăţile pe care trebuie să le daţi leviţilor să fie în număr de patruzeci şi opt, împreună cu păşunile din jurul lor.

8 T ake more cities from the larger families of Israel to give to the Levites. And take less cities from the smaller families. Each should give some of its cities to the Levites by how much land is received.” The Cities to Be a Safe Place

Cetăţile pe care le veţi oferi din moştenirea israeliţilor, să fie date astfel: cei ce au multe cetăţi să dea mai multe şi cei ce au puţine cetăţi să dea mai puţine; fiecare seminţie să dea leviţilor din cetăţile ei, ţinând cont de moştenirea pe care a primit-o.“ Cetăţile de refugiu

9 T hen the Lord said to Moses,

Domnul i-a mai zis lui Moise:

10 “ Say to the people of Israel, ‘When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

„Vorbeşte-le israeliţilor şi spune-le: «Când veţi trece Iordanul în Canaan,

11 c hoose which cities are to be the ones where you can run to be safe. The man who has killed a person without meaning to may run there.

să alegeţi câteva cetăţi care să fie locuri de refugiu, unde să poată fugi ucigaşul care a omorât fără voie o persoană.

12 T he cities will be a safe place for you from the one who wants to punish you. So the one who has killed a person may not die until the people decide if he is guilty or not.

Aceste cetăţi vor fi locuri de refugiu dinaintea răzbunătorului, astfel încât ucigaşul să nu fie omorât înainte de a se înfăţişa în faţa adunării pentru a fi judecat.

13 T he cities you give will be your six cities where you can go to be safe.

Din cetăţile pe care le veţi da, şase să fie cetăţi de refugiu.

14 G ive three cities on the east side of the Jordan and three cities in the land of Canaan. They will be the cities where you can go to be safe.

Trei să le daţi de partea aceasta a Iordanului şi trei în Canaan, ca cetăţi de refugiu.

15 T hese six cities will be safe places for the people of Israel and for the stranger and for the one who visits them. Anyone who kills a person without meaning to may run there.

Aceste şase cetăţi să fie locuri de refugiu pentru israeliţi, pentru străini şi pentru peregrinii din mijlocul vostru, pentru ca orice ucigaş care a omorât fără voie o persoană să poată fugi acolo.

16 ‘ But if he killed him with an iron object, then he is guilty. For sure the killer will be put to death.

Dacă un om loveşte pe cineva cu un obiect de fier şi-l ucide, acel om este un ucigaş; ucigaşul trebuie să fie omorât.

17 I f he knocked him down with a stone so that he died, he is guilty. For sure the killer will be put to death.

Dacă cineva are în mână o piatră a cărei lovitură poate cauza moartea şi loveşte pe cineva omorându-l, acel om este un ucigaş; ucigaşul trebuie să fie omorât.

18 O r if he hit him with a piece of wood in his hand so that he died, he is guilty. For sure the killer will be put to death.

Dacă cineva are în mână un obiect de lemn care poate cauza moartea şi loveşte pe cineva şi-l omoară, acel om este un ucigaş; ucigaşul trebuie să fie omorât.

19 T he man who wants to punish him for the killing will put the killer to death. He will put him to death when he meets him.

Răzbunătorul sângelui să-l omoare pe ucigaş; atunci când îl va întâlni să-l omoare.

20 I f the killer has pushed him because he hated him, or has thrown something at him after waiting for him, and because of this he died,

Dacă cineva împinge cu ură un om sau dacă-l pândeşte şi aruncă cu ceva în el şi-l omoară

21 o r if he hit him down with his hand because he hated him and killed him, for sure the one who killed him must be put to death. He is guilty. The man who wants to punish him for the killing will put him to death when he meets him.

sau dacă-l loveşte cu pumnul din vrăjmăşie şi-l omoară, acel bărbat trebuie să fie omorât; el este un ucigaş. Răzbunătorul sângelui să-l omoare pe ucigaş când îl întâlneşte.

22 ‘ But if he pushed him without planning to and without hating him, or threw something at him without having waited for him,

Dar dacă cineva loveşte dintr-odată un om, nu din duşmănie, sau dacă aruncă cu un obiect în el, fără să-l fi pândit dinainte,

23 o r he threw a stone without seeing him, killing him without hating him or meaning to hurt him,

sau dacă, fără să-l vadă, aruncă în el cu o piatră care poate cauza moartea şi acesta moare, atunci, de vreme ce nu i-a fost duşman şi n-a intenţionat să-l rănească,

24 t hen the people will decide by these Laws between the killer and the one who wants to punish him.

adunarea trebuie să judece între el şi răzbunătorul sângelui, ţinând cont de următoarele legi:

25 T he people will save the killer from the man who wants to punish him. And they will return him to his city where he had gone to be safe. He will live in it until the death of the head religious leader who was set apart with the holy oil.

Adunarea trebuie să-l elibereze pe ucigaş din mâna răzbunătorului de sânge şi să-l trimită înapoi în cetatea de refugiu în care fugise. El să locuiască acolo până la moartea marelui preot care a fost uns cu untdelemn sfânt.

26 B ut if the man who killed another person at sometime goes outside his city where he went to be safe,

Dar dacă ucigaşul trece dincolo de limitele cetăţii de refugiu în care a fugit

27 t hen the man who wants to punish him will not be guilty of blood if he finds him outside the safe city and kills him.

şi răzbunătorul sângelui îl găseşte în afara cetăţii, atunci răzbunătorul sângelui îl poate omorî pe ucigaş şi nu va fi vinovat de omor.

28 B ecause the man should have stayed in his city to be safe until the death of the head religious leader. But after the head religious leader dies, the man who killed another person may return to his own land.

Acuzatul trebuie să rămână în cetatea de refugiu până la moartea marelui preot. Numai după moartea marelui preot se poate reîntoarce la proprietatea lui.

29 ‘ These things will be a Law to you and to all your children-to-come in all your homes.

Acestea vor fi pentru voi hotărâri pe baza cărora să judecaţi toate generaţiile care vor urma, oriunde veţi locui:

30 I f anyone kills a person, the killer must be put to death by what is told by those who saw the killing. But no person may be put to death because of what one person says.

Dacă cineva a ucis o persoană, ucigaşul trebuie să fie omorât doar pe baza mărturiei mai multor martori. Nimeni să nu fie ucis doar pe baza mărturiei unei singure persoane.

31 Y ou must not take pay to save the life of a killer who is guilty of death. But he must be put to death.

Să nu acceptaţi răscumpărare pentru viaţa unui ucigaş vinovat de moarte. El trebuie să fie omorât!

32 Y ou must not take pay for him who has run to his city to be safe, so that he may return to live in the land before the death of the religious leader.

Să nu acceptaţi răscumpărare pentru cel care a fugit într-o cetate de refugiu şi să nu-i daţi voie să se întoarcă şi să locuiască în proprietatea lui înainte de moartea marelui preot.

33 Y ou must not make the land where you live unclean. The land is not holy when people are killed. And only the blood of him who is guilty can pay to make the land free from the blood that has fallen on it.

Să nu pângăriţi ţara unde veţi locui. Sângele pângăreşte ţara şi nu se poate face altfel de ispăşire pentru pământul peste care a fost vărsat sânge, decât prin sângele celui care l-a vărsat.

34 D o not make the land where you live unclean, in the place where I live. For I the Lord am living among the people of Israel.’”

Să nu pângăriţi deci ţara în care veţi locui şi în care voi locui şi Eu, căci Eu, Domnul, locuiesc în mijlocul israeliţilor.»“
