1 T hen Nahash the Ammonite came and his soldiers set up their tents around Jabesh-gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make an agreement with us, and we will work for you.”

Amonitul Nahaş a venit şi şi-a aşezat tabăra împotriva Iabeşului din Ghilad. Atunci toţi bărbaţii din Iabeş i-au zis lui Nahaş: – Încheie cu noi un legământ, iar noi îţi vom sluji.

2 B ut Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “I will make an agreement with you only if I may cut out the right eye of every one of you. This way I will put all Israel to shame.”

Dar Nahaş, amonitul, le-a zis: – Voi încheia un legământ cu voi doar dacă mă lăsaţi să vă scot la toţi ochiul drept, aruncând în acest fel ruşinea peste întregul Israel.

3 T he leaders of Jabesh said to him, “Let us alone for seven days, so we may send men with news through the land of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.”

Cei din sfatul bătrânilor Iabeşului i-au zis: – Lasă-ne un răgaz de şapte zile pentru a putea trimite mesageri în toate teritoriile lui Israel, iar dacă nu va fi nimeni care să ne elibereze, ne vom preda ţie.

4 T he men came to Gibeah of Saul and told the news to the people. And all the people cried with a loud voice.

Când au sosit mesagerii în Ghiva lui Saul şi au spus aceste cuvinte în auzul poporului, tot poporul a început să plângă în hohote.

5 N ow Saul was coming from the field behind the cattle, and he said, “What troubles the people? Why are they crying?” So they told him the news the men had brought from Jabesh.

Saul tocmai se întorcea de la câmp în urma boilor şi a întrebat: „Ce s-a întâmplat cu poporul de plânge?“ Atunci ei i-au povestit despre mesajul bărbaţilor din Iabeş.

6 T he Spirit of God came upon Saul with power when he heard this news, and he became very angry.

Când a auzit Saul aceste cuvinte, Duhul lui Dumnezeu a venit cu putere peste el şi el s-a aprins de mânie.

7 H e took two bulls and cut them in pieces and sent them through the land of Israel with the men who had brought the news, saying, “This will be done to the bulls of those who will not come out after Saul and Samuel.” The fear of the Lord came upon the people, and they all came out together.

A luat o pereche de boi, i-a tăiat în bucăţi şi a trimis bucăţile, prin mesageri, în toate teritoriile lui Israel, spunând: „Aşa se va face cu boii oricui nu îl urmează pe Saul şi pe Samuel.“ Groaza Domnului a intrat în popor, astfel că ei au ieşit la luptă ca un singur om.

8 S aul numbered them at Bezek. There were 300, 000 men of Israel, and 30, 000 men of Judah.

Când Saul i-a numărat la Bezek, din Israel erau trei sute de mii de bărbaţi, iar din Iuda erau treizeci de mii de bărbaţi.

9 T hey said to the men who had brought the news, “Tell the men of Jabesh-gilead that tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will have help.” So the men went and told the news to the men of Jabesh, and they were glad.

Atunci le-a zis mesagerilor care au venit: „Aşa să spuneţi bărbaţilor din Iabeş-Ghilad: «Mâine, când va dogori soarele, veţi fi izbăviţi!»“ Când au sosit mesagerii şi le-au spus aceste lucruri bărbaţilor din Iabeş, aceştia s-au bucurat.

10 T hen the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you. And you may do to us whatever you think is good.”

Ei le-au zis amoniţilor: „Mâine ne vom preda vouă şi veţi putea să faceţi cu noi tot ce veţi vrea.“

11 T he next morning, Saul put the people in three groups. They came among the tents early in the morning and killed the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who were left alive were divided, so that no two of them stayed together.

În ziua următoare, Saul a împărţit oamenii în trei cete. În timpul străjii de dimineaţă au pătruns în tabăra amoniţilor şi i-au zdrobit până la arşiţa zilei. Cei care au supravieţuit s-au împrăştiat, astfel încât n-au mai fost lăsaţi împreună nici măcar doi dintre ei.

12 T hen the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said, ‘Should Saul rule over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.”

Atunci poporul i-a zis lui Samuel: – Care au fost cei ce n-au vrut ca Saul să domnească peste noi? Aduceţi-i la noi pe aceşti oameni, ca să-i ucidem.

13 B ut Saul said, “No man will be put to death this day. For today the Lord has saved Israel.”

Dar Saul a zis: – Nici un om nu va fi dat la moarte în această zi, pentru că astăzi Domnul l-a izbăvit pe Israel.

14 S amuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and make it the place for the king.”

Atunci Samuel a spus poporului: – Să mergem la Ghilgal şi să reafirmăm acolo monarhia.

15 S o all the people went to Gilgal. There they made Saul king before the Lord, in Gilgal. There they gave peace gifts to the Lord. And there Saul and all the men of Israel were filled with much joy.

Astfel, tot poporul s-a dus la Ghilgal şi l-au încoronat pe Saul în prezenţa Domnului. Au adus acolo jertfe de pace înaintea Domnului şi s-au bucurat foarte mult, atât Saul, cât şi toţi israeliţii.
