1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Договор заключил я с моими глазами, чтобы мне не заглядываться на девушек.

2 F or what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

Ведь что за удел мне от Бога свыше, и что за наследие от Всемогущего с небес?

3 I s not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Не грешникам ли беда суждена и гибель – творящим зло?

4 D oth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Разве Он не видит мои пути, не считает каждый мой шаг?

5 I f I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Ходил ли я во лжи, и спешили ли ноги мои к обману?

6 L et me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.

Пусть Бог меня взвесит на верных весах, и тогда Он узнает, что я непорочен!

7 I f my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

Если стопы мои от пути уклонялись, если сердце мое следовало за моими глазами, и руки мои осквернялись,

8 T hen let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

то пусть другие съедят то, что я посеял, и исторгнется с корнем мой урожай.

9 I f mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;

Если сердце мое соблазнялось женщиной, если я выжидал ее у дверей ближнего,

10 T hen let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

пусть жена моя мелет зерно другому, и чужие люди с ней спят.

11 F or this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

Ведь это гнусное преступление, грех, подлежащий суду.

12 F or it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

Ведь это огонь, палящий до Погибели; который сжег бы мое добро.

13 I f I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

Если лишал я слугу или служанку справедливости, когда они были в тяжбе со мной,

14 W hat then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

то, что стал бы я делать, когда Бог восстанет на суд? Что я сказал бы, будучи призван к ответу?

15 D id not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Разве не Тот, Кто создал меня в утробе, создал и их? Не один ли Творец во чреве нас сотворил?

16 I f I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

Если я бедным отказывал в просьбах, и печалил глаза вдовы,

17 O r have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

если один я съедал свой хлеб, с сиротою им не делясь –

18 ( For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)

я с юности растил его, как отец, и от чрева матери заботился о вдове –

19 I f I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

если я видел гибнувшего нагим и нищего без одежды,

20 I f his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

и сердце его не благословляло меня, за то, что согрел я его шерстью моих овец,

21 I f I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

если поднимал я руку на сироту, зная, что есть у меня влияние в суде,

22 T hen let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

пусть рука моя отпадет от плеча, пусть переломится в суставе.

23 F or destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

Я боялся бед от Бога и, страшась Его величия, я не смог бы такого сделать.

24 I f I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Если бы я на золото понадеялся, и сказал бы сокровищу: «Ты опора моя»,

25 I f I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

если бы ликовал, что богатство мое несметно, что так много собрала моя рука,

26 I f I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

если глядя на солнце в его сиянии или на луну в ее сверкающем шествии,

27 A nd my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

я сердцем прельщался втайне, и слал им воздушный поцелуй,

28 T his also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

то и эти грехи подлежат суду, ведь так я предал бы Всевышнего Бога.

29 I f I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

Если рад я был гибели моего врага, ликовал, когда он попадал в беду –

30 N either have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

но я не давал согрешить устам, не призывал проклятия на его жизнь, –

31 I f the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

если в шатре моем не говорили: «Насытиться бы нам его мясом! » –

32 T he stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

но и странник не ночевал на улице, ведь мои двери отворялись прохожему –

33 I f I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

если я скрывал свой грех, как Адам, в сердце своем прятал вину,

34 D id I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

из-за страха перед толпой, из-за боязни перед сородичами, – то я бы молчал и сидел взаперти.

35 O h that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

(О если бы кто-нибудь меня выслушал! Вот подпись моя. Пусть Всемогущий ответит. Пусть мой обвинитель запишет свое обвинение.

36 S urely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

О, я носил бы его на плече, надевал его, как венец.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

Каждый свой шаг я открыл бы Ему, и, как князь, приблизился бы к Нему.)

38 I f my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

Если взывала против меня земля, и рыдали ее борозды вместе,

39 I f I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

потому что я ел ее плод, и не платил за него, и душу владельцев ее изнурял,

40 L et thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

то пусть растет вместо хлеба терн и сорные травы взамен ячменя. Закончились слова Иова.
