1 T hen Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

Аммонитянин Нахаш пришел и осадил Иавеш Галаадский. Все жители Иавеша сказали ему: − Заключи с нами союз, и мы будем подчиняться тебе.

2 A nd Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

Но Нахаш аммонитянин ответил: − Я заключу с вами союз только на том условии, что выколю каждому из вас правый глаз и так покрою бесчестием весь Израиль.

3 A nd the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Старейшины Иавеша сказали ему: − Дай нам семь дней, чтобы мы могли послать вестников по всему Израилю. Если никто не придет, чтобы спасти нас, мы сдадимся тебе.

4 T hen came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

Когда вестники пришли в Гиву к Саулу и рассказали народу о том, что произошло, весь народ громко заплакал.

5 A nd, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

Как раз в это время Саул возвращался с полей, идя за своими волами, и спросил: − Что за беда у народа? Почему он плачет? Тогда ему пересказали то, что рассказали жители Иавеша.

6 A nd the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

Когда Саул услышал их слова, Дух Бога сошел на него, и Саул разгневался.

7 A nd he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

Он взял пару волов, рассек их на куски и разослал с вестниками по всему Израилю, объявляя: − Вот что будет с волами всякого, кто не пойдет за Саулом и Самуилом. Страх Господа охватил народ, и они выступили все как один.

8 A nd when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

Когда Саул построил их в Везеке, мужчин Израиля было триста тысяч, а мужчин Иудеи − тридцать тысяч.

9 A nd they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Они сказали вестникам: − Передайте жителям Иавеша Галаадского: «Завтра к тому часу, когда станет припекать солнце, вы будете спасены». Когда вестники передали это жителям Иавеша, те ободрились.

10 T herefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

Они сказали аммонитянам: − Завтра мы сдадимся вам, и вы сможете сделать все, что вам угодно.

11 A nd it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

На следующий день Саул разделил своих людей на три отряда. Во время последней стражи ночи они ворвались в лагерь аммонитян и перебили их до часа дневного зноя. Уцелевшие были рассеяны, так что не осталось двоих вместе. Утверждение царской власти Саула

12 A nd the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

После этого народ сказал Самуилу: − Кто это говорил: «Неужели Саул будет править нами?» Приведи к нам этих людей, мы убьем их.

13 A nd Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.

Но Саул ответил: − Сегодня никто не будет казнен, ведь в этот день Господь спас Израиль.

14 T hen said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

И Самуил сказал народу: − Пойдем в Гилгал и утвердим там царскую власть.

15 A nd all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Весь народ пошел в Гилгал и утвердил Саула царем в присутствии Господа. Там они принесли перед Господом жертвы примирения. Очень веселился там Саул вместе со всеми израильтянами.
