1 W hen Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “See, David is in the desert of Engedi.”

Cînd s'a întors Saul de la urmărirea Filistenilor, au venit şi i-au spus:,, Iată că David este în pustia En-Ghedi.``

2 T hen Saul took 3, 000 chosen men from all Israel, and went to find David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.

Saul a luat trei mii de oameni aleşi din tot Israelul, şi s'a dus să caute pe David şi pe oamenii lui pînă pe stîncile ţapilor sălbatici.

3 H e came to the places where the sheep were kept on the way. There was a cave there, and Saul went in to get rid of his body waste. Now David and his men were sitting farther back in the cave.

A ajuns la nişte stîne de oi, cari erau lîngă drum; şi acolo era o peşteră, în care a intrat să doarmă. David şi oamenii lui erau... în fundul peşterii.

4 D avid’s men said to David, “See, this is the day the Lord told you, ‘See, I am about to give the one who hates you into your hand. You will do to him what you think is best.’” Then David got up and cut off a piece of Saul’s clothing in secret.

Oamenii lui David i-au zis:,, Iată ziua în care Domnul îţi zice:, Dau pe vrăjmaşul tău în mînile tale; fă -i ce-ţi va plăcea.`` David s'a sculat, şi a tăiat încet colţul hainei lui Saul.

5 A fter this, David felt guilty in his heart because he had cut off a piece of Saul’s clothing.

După aceea, inima îi bătea, pentrucă tăiase colţul hainei lui Saul.

6 S o he said to his men, “May the Lord not let me put out my hand against my leader, for he is the Lord’s chosen one.”

Şi a zis oamenilor săi:,, Să mă ferească Domnul să fac împotriva domnului meu, care este unsul Domnului, o aşa faptă ca să pun mîna pe el! Căci el este unsul Domnului.``

7 D avid stopped his men with these words. He did not let them go against Saul. So Saul stood up and left the cave, and went on his way.

Cu aceste cuvinte David a oprit pe oamenii săi, şi i -a împedecat să se arunce asupra lui Saul. Apoi Saul s'a sculat să iasă din peşteră, şi şi -a văzut înainte de drum.

8 A fter this David got up and went out of the cave and called to Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David put his face to the ground, showing much respect.

După aceea, David s'a sculat şi a ieşit din peşteră. El a început să strige atunci după Saul:,,Împărate, domnul meu!`` Saul s'a suit înapoi, şi David s'a plecat cu faţa la pămînt şi s'a închinat.

9 D avid said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘David wants to hurt you’?

David a zis lui Saul:,, De ce asculţi tu de vorbele oamenilor cari zic:, David îţi vrea răul?`

10 S ee, your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you to me today in the cave. Some told me to kill you, but I had pity on you. I said, ‘I will not put out my hand against my leader, for he is the Lord’s chosen one.’

Vezi acum cu ochii tăi că Domnul te dăduse astăzi în mînile mele în peşteră. Oamenii mei mă îndemnau să te omor; dar te-am cruţat, şi am zis:, Nu voi pune mîna pe domnul meu, căci este unsul Domnului.`

11 N ow, my father, see the piece of your clothing in my hand. I cut off the piece of your clothing but did not kill you. So know and understand that I have no desire to do wrong to you. I have not sinned against you, yet you come wanting to kill me.

Uite, părintele meu, uite colţul hainei tale în mîna mea. Fiindcă ţi-am tăiat colţul hainei, şi nu te-am ucis, să ştii şi să vezi că în purtarea mea nu este nici răutate nici răzvrătire, şi că n'am păcătuit împotriva ta. Totuş tu îmi întinzi curse, ca să-mi iei viaţa.

12 M ay the Lord judge between you and me. May He punish you for your action against me. But my hand will not be against you.

Judece Domnul între mine şi tine, şi Domnul să mă răzbune pe tine; dar eu nu voi pune mîna pe tine.

13 A s the men of long ago said in their wisdom, ‘Out of the sinful comes sin,’ but my hand will not be against you.

Răul dela cei răi vine, zice vechea zicală. De aceea eu nu voi pune mîna pe tine.

14 A fter whom has the king come out? After whom are you running? After a dead dog? After a little bug?

Împotriva cui a pornit împăratul lui Israel? Pe cine urmăreşti tu? Un cîne mort, un purice.

15 M ay the Lord be the One to judge between you and me. May He see and help me, and save me from you.”

Domnul va judeca şi va hotărî între mine şi tine, El va vedea, El îmi va... apăra pricina şi El îmi va face dreptate, izbăvindu-mă din mîna ta.``

16 W hen David had finished speaking to Saul, Saul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” Then Saul gave a loud cry.

Cînd a sfîrşit David de spus aceste vorbe lui Saul, Saul a zis:,, Glasul tău este, fiule David?`` Şi Saul a ridicat glasul şi a plîns.

17 H e said to David, “You are more right and good than I. For you have brought good to me, while I have done wrong to you.

Şi a zis lui David:,, Tu eşti mai bun decît mine; căci tu mi-ai făcut... bine, iar eu ţi-am făcut rău.

18 Y ou have said today that you have done good to me. The Lord gave me to you and you did not kill me.

Tu îţi arăţi azi bunătatea cu care te porţi faţă de mine, căci Domnul mă dăduse în mînile tale, şi nu m'ai omorît.

19 I f a man finds the one who hates him, will he let him go away safe? May the Lord bring good to you for what you have done for me this day.

Dacă întîlneşte cineva pe vrăjmaşul lui, îl lasă oare să-şi urmeze drumul în linişte? Domnul să-ţi răsplătească pentru ce mi-ai făcut în ziua aceasta!

20 N ow I know that you will be king for sure. The nation of Israel will be made strong under your power.

Acum iată, ştiu că tu vei domni, şi că împărăţia lui Israel va rămînea în mînile tale.

21 S o promise to me by the Lord that you will not destroy my children after me. Promise that you will not destroy my name from my father’s family.”

Jură-mi dar pe Domnul că nu-mi vei nimici sămînţa mea după mine, şi că nu-mi vei şterge numele din casa tatălui meu.``

22 D avid gave Saul his promise, and Saul went home. But David and his men went up to the safe place.

David a jurat lui Saul. Apoi Saul a plecat acasă, iar David şi oamenii lui s'au suit în locul întărit.
