1 J oash was seven years old when he became king. And he ruled forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

DE SIETE años era Joas cuando comenzó á reinar, y cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalem. El nombre de su madre fué Sibia, de Beer-seba.

2 J oash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the religious leader.

E hizo Joas lo recto en ojos de Jehová todos los días de Joiada el sacerdote.

3 J ehoiada took two wives for him, and he became the father of sons and daughters.

Y tomó para él Joiada dos mujeres; y engendró hijos é hijas.

4 A fter this Joash decided to do the work that was needed on the Lord’s house.

Después de esto aconteció que Joas tuvo voluntad de reparar la casa de Jehová.

5 H e gathered the religious leaders and Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah. And gather money from all Israel to pay for the work needed to be done on the house of your God from year to year. Be quick about it.” But the Levites did not hurry.

Y juntó los sacerdotes y los Levitas, y díjoles: Salid por las ciudades de Judá, y juntad dinero de todo Israel, para que cada año sea reparada la casa de vuestro Dios; y vosotros poned diligencia en el negocio. Mas los Levitas no pusieron diligencia.

6 S o the king called for Jehoiada the head religious leader, and said to him, “Why have you not made the Levites bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax set by Moses the Lord’s servant? All the people of Israel were to pay taxes for the tent of the Law.”

Por lo cual el rey llamó á Joiada el principal, y díjole: ¿Por qué no has procurado que los Levitas traigan de Judá y de Jerusalem al tabernáculo del testimonio, la ofrenda que impuso Moisés siervo de Jehová, y de la congregación de Israel?

7 F or the sons of that sinful woman Athaliah had broken into the house of God. They even used the holy things of the Lord’s house for the false gods of Baal.

Porque la impía Athalía y sus hijos habían destruído la casa de Dios, y además habían gastado en los ídolos todas las cosas consagradas á la casa de Jehová.

8 S o the king had them make a box and set it outside by the gate of the Lord’s house.

Mandó pues el rey que hiciesen un arca, la cual pusieron fuera á la puerta de la casa de Jehová;

9 A nd they made it known in Judah and Jerusalem that the tax set by God’s servant Moses on Israel in the desert must be brought to the Lord.

E hicieron pregonar en Judá y en Jerusalem, que trajesen á Jehová la ofrenda que Moisés siervo de Dios había impuesto á Israel en el desierto.

10 T hen all the leaders and all the people were filled with joy. They brought in their taxes and put the money into the box until they had finished.

Y todos los príncipes y todo el pueblo se holgaron: y traían, y echaban en el arca hasta henchirla.

11 T he Levites would bring the box in to the king’s helper. And when they saw that there was much money, the king’s writer and the head religious leader’s helper would come and empty the box. They would take out the money and return the box to its place. They did this each day, and gathered much money.

Y como venía el tiempo para llevar el arca al magistrado del rey por mano de los Levitas, cuando veían que había mucho dinero, venía el escriba del rey, y el que estaba puesto por el sumo sacerdote, y llevaban el arca, y vaciábanla, y volvíanla á su lugar: y así lo hacían de día en día, y recogían mucho dinero;

12 T he king and Jehoiada gave it to those who watched over the work being done on the Lord’s house. They paid those who worked with stone and wood and iron and brass, for the work done on the Lord’s house.

El cual daba el rey y Joiada á los que hacían la obra del servicio de la casa de Jehová, y tomaban canteros y oficiales que reparasen la casa de Jehová, y herreros y metalarios para componer la casa de Jehová.

13 S o the workmen worked hard doing what needed to be done. The house of God was like new again, just as it was planned. They made it strong.

Hacían pues los oficiales la obra, y por sus manos fué la obra restaurada, y restituyeron la casa de Dios á su condición, y la consolidaron.

14 W hen they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada. From it were made the objects used in the Lord’s house. These things were made for the worship and the burnt gifts. Then dishes and pots of gold and silver were made. And they gave burnt gifts in the house of the Lord all the time, all the days of Jehoiada.

Y cuando hubieron acabado, trajeron lo que quedaba del dinero al rey y á Joiada, é hicieron de él vasos para la casa de Jehová, vasos para el servicio, morteros, cucharas, vasos de oro y de plata. Y sacrificaban holocaustos continuamente en la casa de Jehová todos los días de Joiada.

15 W hen Jehoiada had lived a long time, he died. He died when he was 130 years old.

Mas Joiada envejeció, y murió harto de días: de ciento y treinta años era cuando murió.

16 T hey buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done well in Israel, and to God and His house.

Y sepultáronlo en la ciudad de David con los reyes, por cuanto había hecho bien con Israel, y para con Dios, y con su casa.

17 B ut after the death of Jehoiada, the leaders of Judah came and bowed down in front of the king. And the king listened to them.

Muerto Joiada, vinieron los príncipes de Judá, é hicieron acatamiento al rey; y el rey los oyó.

18 T hey left the house of the Lord the God of their fathers, and worshiped the false gods of Asherah and the objects made to look like them. So anger came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of their sin.

Y desampararon la casa de Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron á los bosques y á las imágenes esculpidas; y la ira vino sobre Judá y Jerusalem por este su pecado.

19 Y et God sent men who speak for God to bring them back to the Lord. These men of God spoke against them, but they would not listen.

Y envióles profetas, para que los redujesen á Jehová, los cuales les protestaron: mas ellos no los escucharon.

20 T hen the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the religious leader. He stood where he could be seen by the people and said to them, “God says, ‘Why do you sin against the Laws of the Lord, and bring trouble on yourselves? Because you have left the Lord, He has left you.’”

Y el espíritu de Dios envistió á Zachârías, hijo de Joiada el sacerdote, el cual estando sobre el pueblo, les dijo: Así ha dicho Dios: ¿Por qué quebrantáis los mandamientos de Jehová? No os vendrá bien de ello; porque por haber dejado á Jehová, el también os dejará.

21 S o they made plans against him. At the king’s word, they killed Zechariah with stones in the open space of the Lord’s house.

Mas ellos hicieron conspiración contra él, y cubriéronle de piedras por mandato del rey, en el patio de la casa de Jehová.

22 S o Joash the king did not remember the kindness his father Jehoiada had shown him, but he killed his son. And when Zechariah was dying, he said, “May the Lord see and punish!” The Death of Joash

No tuvo pues memoria el rey Joas de la misericordia que su padre Joiada había hecho con él, antes matóle su hijo; el cual dijo al morir: Jehová lo vea, y lo requiera.

23 A t the end of the year the army of the Syrians came up against Joash. They came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the leaders of the people. And they sent all they had taken in battle to the king of Damascus.

A la vuelta del año subió contra él el ejército de Siria; y vinieron á Judá y á Jerusalem, y destruyeron en el pueblo á todos los principales de él, y enviaron todos sus despojos al rey á Damasco.

24 T he army of the Syrians came with a small number of men. But the Lord let them win against a very large army. Because the people of Judah and Jerusalem had turned away from the Lord, the God of their fathers. So the Syrians were used to punish Joash.

Porque aunque el ejército de Siria había venido con poca gente, Jehová les entregó en sus manos un ejército muy numeroso; por cuanto habían dejado á Jehová el Dios de sus padres. Y con Joas hicieron juicios.

25 W hen they had left Joash, leaving him very sick, his own servants made plans against him because of the blood of the son of Jehoiada the religious leader. And they killed him on his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the city of David. But they did not bury him in the graves of the kings.

Y yéndose de él los Siros, dejáronlo en muchas enfermedades; y conspiraron contra él sus siervos á causa de las sangres de los hijos de Joiada el sacerdote, é hiriéronle en su cama, y murió: y sepultáronle en la ciudad de David, mas no lo sepultaron en los sepulcros de los reyes.

26 T he men who made plans against Joash were Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

Los que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad, hijo de Simath Ammonita, y Jozabad, hijo de Simrith Moabita.

27 N ow the story of his sons, and the words spoken by wise men against him, and the work done on the house of God, are written in the Book of the Kings. His son Amaziah became king in his place.

De sus hijos, y de la multiplicación que hizo de las rentas, y de la instauración de la casa de Jehová, he aquí está escrito en la historia del libro de los reyes. Y reinó en su lugar Amasías su hijo.
