1 A fter these things had been done, the leaders came to me, saying, “The people of Israel and the religious leaders and the Levites have not separated themselves from the people of the lands. They have followed the sinful ways of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

Y ACABADAS estas cosas, los príncipes se llegaron á mí, diciendo: El pueblo de Israel, y los sacerdotes y levitas, no se han apartado de los pueblos de las tierras, de los Cananeos, Hetheos, Pherezeos, Jebuseos, Ammonitas, y Moabitas, Egipcios, y Amorrheos, haciendo conforme á sus abominaciones.

2 F or they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons. The holy people have mixed with the peoples of the lands. The leaders and rulers of the government have been the first in this sin.”

Porque han tomado de sus hijas para sí y para sus hijos, y la simiente santa ha sido mezclada con los pueblos de las tierras; y la mano de los príncipes y de los gobernadores ha sido la primera en esta prevaricación.

3 W hen I heard this, I tore my clothing and my coat, and pulled hair from my head and face, and sat down filled with much trouble and fear.

Lo cual oyendo yo, rasgué mi vestido y mi manto, y arranqué de los cabellos de mi cabeza y de mi barba, y sentéme atónito.

4 T hen everyone who shook with fear at the words of the God of Israel, because of the sin of the Jews who returned from Babylon, gathered around me. And I sat filled with trouble and fear until the time to give the evening gift in worship.

Y juntáronse á mí todos los temerosos de las palabras del Dios de Israel, á causa de la prevaricación de los de la transmigración; mas yo estuve sentado atónito hasta el sacrificio de la tarde.

5 W hen the evening gift was given, I rose up from my trouble, with my clothing and coat torn. And I got down on my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God.

Y al sacrificio de la tarde levantéme de mi aflicción; y habiendo rasgado mi vestido y mi manto, postréme de rodillas, y extendí mis palmas á Jehová mi Dios,

6 I said, “O my God, I am ashamed to lift up my face to You, my God, for our sins have risen above our heads. Our guilt has grown even to the heavens.

Y dije: Dios mío, confuso y avergonzado estoy para levantar, oh Dios mío, mi rostro á ti: porque nuestras iniquidades se han multiplicado sobre nuestra cabeza, y nuestros delitos han crecido hasta el cielo.

7 W e have been very guilty since the days of our fathers to this day. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our religious leaders have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands. We have been killed by the sword. We have been carried away to a strange land. We have had our things taken from us, and have been put to shame, as it is this day.

Desde los días de nuestros padres hasta este día estamos en grande culpa; y por nuestras iniquidades nosotros, nuestros reyes, y nuestros sacerdotes, hemos sido entregados en manos de los reyes de las tierras, á cuchillo, á cautiverio, y á robo, y á confusión de rostro, como hoy día.

8 B ut now for a short time loving-favor has been shown to us from the Lord our God. He has kept some of us alive to return to get a hold on His holy place, that our God may give light to our eyes, and give us some new life while we are under the power of Persia.

Y ahora como por un breve momento fué la misericordia de Jehová nuestro Dios, para hacer que nos quedase un resto libre, y para darnos estaca en el lugar de su santuario, á fin de alumbrar nuestros ojos nuestro Dios, y darnos una poca de vida en nuestra servidumbre.

9 F or we are servants, but our God has not left us even while we are servants of another nation. He has shown us loving-kindness in the eyes of the kings of Persia. He has given us new life to set up the house of our God, to build again its parts that have been destroyed, and to give us a wall in Judah and Jerusalem.

Porque siervos éramos: mas en nuestra servidumbre no nos desamparó nuestro Dios, antes inclinó sobre nosotros misericordia delante de los reyes de Persia, para que se nos diese vida para alzar la casa de nuestro Dios, y para hacer restaurar sus asolamientos, y para darnos vallado en Judá y en Jerusalem.

10 A nd now, our God, what should we say after this? For we have turned away from Your Laws,

Mas ahora, ¿qué diremos, oh Dios nuestro, después de esto? porque nosotros hemos dejado tus mandamientos,

11 w hich You have given to us by Your servants who spoke for You, saying, ‘The land which you are going in to take for your own is an unclean land. The peoples of the lands are unclean and have sinful ways, and they have filled it from end to end with their sin.

Los cuales prescribiste por mano de tus siervos los profetas, diciendo: La tierra á la cual entráis para poseerla, tierra inmunda es á causa de la inmundicia de los pueblos de aquellas regiones, por las abominaciones de que la han henchido de uno á otro extremo con su inmundicia.

12 S o do not let your daughters marry their sons, or their daughters marry your sons. Never look for their peace or their well-being, that you may be strong and eat the good things of the land, and leave it as a gift to your children forever.’

Ahora pues, no daréis vuestras hijas á los hijos de ellos, ni sus hijas tomaréis para vuestros hijos, ni procuraréis su paz ni su bien para siempre; para que seáis corroborados, y comáis el bien de la tierra, y la dejéis por heredad á vuestros hijos para siempre.

13 Y ou, our God, have made our punishment less than our sins. You have given us these people who are left of the Jews and who have returned from a strange land. And after all that has come upon us because of our wrong-doing and much guilt,

Mas después de todo lo que nos ha sobrevenido á causa de nuestras malas obras, y á causa de nuestro grande delito, ya que tú, Dios nuestro, estorbaste que fuésemos oprimidos bajo de nuestras iniquidades, y nos diste este tal efugio;

14 s hould we break Your Laws again and marry the peoples who do these sinful things? Would You not be angry with us until we are destroyed and there is no one left?

¿Hemos de volver á infringir tus mandamientos, y á emparentar con los pueblos de estas abominaciones? ¿No te ensañarías contra nosotros hasta consumirnos, sin que quedara resto ni escapatoria?

15 O Lord God of Israel, You are right and good. For some of us have been left alive to return, as it is this day. See, we are guilty before You. No one can stand before You because of this.”

Jehová, Dios de Israel, tú eres justo: pues que hemos quedado algunossalvos, como este día, henos aquí delante de ti en nuestros delitos; porque no es posible subsistir en tu presencia á causa de esto.
