1 M y son! if thou hast been surety for thy friend, Hast stricken for a stranger thy hand,

2 H ast been snared with sayings of thy mouth, Hast been captured with sayings of thy mouth,

Si te has ligado con las palabras de tu boca, Y has quedado preso en los dichos de tus labios,

3 D o this now, my son, and be delivered, For thou hast come into the hand of thy friend. Go, trample on thyself, and strengthen thy friend,

Haz esto ahora, hijo mío, y líbrate, Ya que has caído en las manos de tu prójimo; Ve, humíllate, importuna a tu amigo.

4 G ive not sleep to thine eyes, And slumber to thine eyelids,

No des sueño a tus ojos, Ni a tus párpados adormecimiento;

5 B e delivered as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of a fowler.

Escápate como gacela de la mano del cazador, Y como ave de la mano del que arma lazos.

6 G o unto the ant, O slothful one, See her ways and be wise;

Observa a la hormiga, oh perezoso, Mira sus caminos, y serás sabio;

7 W hich hath not captain, overseer, and ruler,

La cual, no teniendo capitán, Ni gobernador, ni señor,

8 S he doth prepare in summer her bread, She hath gathered in harvest her food.

Prepara en el verano su comida, Y recoge en el tiempo de la siega su mantenimiento.

9 T ill when, O slothful one, dost thou lie? When dost thou arise from thy sleep?

Perezoso, ¿hasta cuándo has de dormir? ¿Cuándo te levantarás de tu sueño?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little clasping of the hands to rest,

Un poco de sueño, un poco de dormitar, Y cruzar otro poco las manos sobre el pecho;

11 A nd thy poverty hath come as a traveller, And thy want as an armed man.

Así vendrá tu necesidad como un merodeador, Y tu pobreza como hombre armado.

12 A man of worthlessness, a man of iniquity, Walking perverseness of mouth,

El hombre malo, el hombre depravado, Es el que anda en falsedad de boca;

13 W inking with his eyes, speaking with his feet, Directing with his fingers,

Que guiña los ojos, que arrastra los pies, Que hace señas con los dedos.

14 F rowardness in his heart, devising evil at all times, Contentions he sendeth forth.

Perversidades hay en su corazón; anda pensando el mal. En todo tiempo siembra discordias.

15 T herefore suddenly cometh his calamity, Instantly he is broken -- and no healing.

Pero le llegará la desgracia de repente; Súbitamente será quebrantado, y no habrá remedio.

16 T hese six hath Jehovah hated, Yea, seven abominations to His soul.

Seis cosas aborrece Jehová, Y aun siete abomina su alma:

17 E yes high -- tongues false -- And hands shedding innocent blood --

Los ojos altivos, la lengua mentirosa, Las manos derramadoras de sangre inocente,

18 A heart devising thoughts of vanity -- Feet hasting to run to evil --

El corazón que maquina pensamientos inicuos, Los pies presurosos para correr al mal,

19 A false witness doth breathe out lies -- And one sending forth contentions between brethren.

El testigo falso que habla mentiras, Y el que siembra discordia entre hermanos. Amonestación contra el adulterio

20 K eep, my son, the command of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother.

Guarda, hijo mío, el mandamiento de tu padre, Y no rechaces la enseñanza de tu madre;

21 B ind them on thy heart continually, Tie them on thy neck.

Átalos siempre en tu corazón, Enlázalos a tu cuello.

22 I n thy going up and down, it leadeth thee, In thy lying down, it watcheth over thee, And thou hast awaked -- it talketh thee.

Te guiarán cuando andes; cuando duermas, velarán por ti; Hablarán contigo cuando despiertes.

23 F or a lamp the command, And the law a light, And a way of life reproofs of instruction,

Porque el mandamiento es lámpara, y la enseñanza es luz, Y camino de vida las reprensiones que te instruyen,

24 T o preserve thee from an evil woman, From the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

Para que te guarden de la mala mujer, De la blandura de la lengua de la mujer extraña.

25 D esire not her beauty in thy heart, And let her not take thee with her eyelids.

No codicies su hermosura en tu corazón, Ni ella te prenda con sus ojos;

26 F or a harlot consumeth unto a cake of bread, And an adulteress the precious soul hunteth.

Porque la ramera se contenta con una hogaza de pan, Pero la adúltera va a la caza de la vida preciosa de un varón.

27 D oth a man take fire into his bosom, And are his garments not burnt?

¿Tomará el hombre fuego en su seno Sin que sus vestidos ardan?

28 D oth a man walk on the hot coals, And are his feet not scorched?

¿Andará el hombre sobre brasas Sin que sus pies se quemen?

29 S o he who hath gone in unto the wife of his neighbour, None who doth touch her is innocent.

Así es el que se llega a la mujer de su prójimo; No quedará impune ninguno que la toque.

30 T hey do not despise the thief, When he stealeth to fill his soul when he is hungry,

¿No tienen en poco al ladrón si hurta Para saciar su apetito cuando tiene hambre?

31 A nd being found he repayeth sevenfold, All the substance of his house he giveth.

Pero si es sorprendido, pagará siete veces; Entregará todo el haber de su casa.

32 H e who committeth adultery a woman lacketh heart, He is destroying his soul who doth it.

Mas el que comete adulterio es falto de entendimiento; Arruina su alma el que tal hace.

33 A stroke and shame he doth find, And his reproach is not wiped away,

Heridas y vergüenza hallará, Y su afrenta nunca será borrada.

34 F or jealousy the fury of a man, And he doth not spare in a day of vengeance.

Porque los celos enfurecen al marido, Y no perdonará en el día de la venganza.

35 H e accepteth not the appearance of any atonement, Yea, he doth not consent, Though thou dost multiply bribes!

No aceptará ninguna indemnización, Ni querrá perdonar, aunque multipliques los regalos.
