1 P ursue the love, and seek earnestly the spiritual things, and rather that ye may prophecy,

Procurad alcanzar el amor; y desead con celo los dones espirituales, especialmente que profeticéis.

2 f or he who is speaking in an tongue -- to men he doth not speak, but to God, for no one doth hearken, and in spirit he doth speak secrets;

Porque el que habla en lenguas, no habla a los hombres, sino a Dios; pues nadie le entiende, sino que en espíritu habla misterios.

3 a nd he who is prophesying to men doth speak edification, and exhortation, and comfort;

Pero el que profetiza, habla a los hombres para edificación, exhortación y consolación.

4 h e who is speaking in an tongue, himself doth edify, and he who is prophesying, an assembly doth edify;

El que habla en lenguas, a sí mismo se edifica; pero el que profetiza, edifica a la iglesia.

5 a nd I wish you all to speak with tongues, and more that ye may prophecy, for greater is he who is prophesying than he who is speaking with tongues, except one may interpret, that the assembly may receive edification.

Así que, querría que todos vosotros hablaseis en lenguas, pero más que profetizaseis; porque el que profetiza es superior al que habla en lenguas, a no ser que las interprete para que la iglesia reciba edificación.

6 A nd now, brethren, if I may come unto you speaking tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophesying, or in teaching?

Así pues, hermanos, si yo voy a vosotros hablando en lenguas, ¿de qué provecho os seré, si no os hablo con revelación, o con ciencia, o con profecía, o con enseñanza?

7 y et the things without life giving sound -- whether pipe or harp -- if a difference in the sounds they may not give, how shall be known that which is piped or that which is harped?

Ciertamente las cosas inanimadas que producen sonidos, como la flauta o la cítara, si no dan distinción de notas, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se toca con la flauta o con la cítara?

8 f or if also an uncertain sound a trumpet may give, who shall prepare himself for battle?

Y si la trompeta da un sonido confuso, ¿quién se preparará para la batalla?

9 s o also ye, if through the tongue, speech easily understood ye may not give -- how shall that which is spoken be known? for ye shall be speaking to air.

Así también vosotros, si por la lengua no dais palabra bien comprensible, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que decís? Porque hablaréis al aire.

10 T here are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is unmeaning,

Tantas clases de lenguas hay, seguramente, en el mundo, y ninguna de ellas carece de significado.

11 i f, then, I do not know the power of the voice, I shall be to him who is speaking a foreigner, and he who is speaking, is to me a foreigner;

Pero si yo ignoro el valor de las palabras, seré como extranjero para el que habla, y el que habla será como extranjero para mí.

12 s o also ye, since ye are earnestly desirous of spiritual gifts, for the building up of the assembly seek that ye may abound;

Así también vosotros; pues que anheláis dones espirituales, procurad abundar en ellos para edificación de la iglesia.

13 w herefore he who is speaking in an tongue -- let him pray that he may interpret;

Por lo cual, el que habla en lenguas, pida en oración poder interpretarlas.

14 f or if I pray in an tongue, my spirit doth pray, and my understanding is unfruitful.

Porque si oro en lenguas, mi espíritu ora, pero mi entendimiento queda sin fruto.

15 W hat then is it? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray also with the understanding; I will sing psalms with the spirit, and I will sing psalms also with the understanding;

¿Qué, pues? Oraré con el espíritu, pero oraré también con el entendimiento; cantaré con el espíritu, pero cantaré también con el entendimiento.

16 s ince, if thou mayest bless with the spirit, he who is filling the place of the unlearned, how shall he say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, since what thou dost say he hath not known?

Porque si bendices sólo con el espíritu, el que ocupa lugar de oyente sencillo, ¿cómo dirá el Amén a tu acción de gracias?; pues no sabe lo que estás diciendo.

17 f or thou, indeed, dost give thanks well, but the other is not built up!

Porque tú, a la verdad, das gracias bien; pero el otro no es edificado.

18 I give thanks to my God -- more than you all with tongues speaking --

Doy gracias a Dios de que hablo en lenguas más que todos vosotros;

19 b ut in an assembly I wish to speak five words through my understanding, that others also I may instruct, rather than myriads of words in an tongue.

pero en la iglesia prefiero hablar cinco palabras con mi entendimiento, para instruir también a otros, que diez mil palabras en lenguas.

20 B rethren, become not children in the understanding, but in the evil be ye babes, and in the understanding become ye perfect;

Hermanos, no seáis niños en el modo de pensar, sino sed niños en la malicia, pero maduros en el modo de pensar.

21 i n the law it hath been written, that, `With other tongues and with other lips I will speak to this people, and not even so will they hear Me, saith the Lord;'

En la ley está escrito: En otras lenguas y con otros labios hablaré a este pueblo; y ni aun así me escucharán, dice el Señor.

22 s o that the tongues are for a sign, not to the believing, but to the unbelieving; and the prophesy not for the unbelieving, but for the believing,

Así que, las lenguas son por señal, no a los creyentes, sino a los incrédulos; pero la profecía, no a los incrédulos, sino a los creyentes.

23 I f, therefore, the whole assembly may come together, to the same place, and all may speak with tongues, and there may come in unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

Si, pues, toda la iglesia se reúne en un solo lugar, y todos hablan en lenguas, y entran indoctos o incrédulos, ¿no dirán que estáis locos?

24 a nd if all may prophecy, and any one may come in, an unbeliever or unlearned, he is convicted by all, he is discerned by all,

Pero si todos profetizan, y entra algún incrédulo o indocto, por todos es convencido, por todos es juzgado;

25 a nd so the secrets of his heart become manifest, and so having fallen upon face, he will bow before God, declaring that God really is among you.

lo secreto de su corazón se hace manifiesto; y así, postrándose sobre el rostro, adorará a Dios, declarando que Dios está realmente entre vosotros.

26 W hat then is it, brethren? whenever ye may come together, each of you hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation? let all things be for building up;

¿Qué, pues, hermanos? Cuando os reunís, cada uno de vosotros tiene salmo, tiene enseñanza, tiene lengua, tiene revelación, tiene interpretación. Hágase todo para edificación.

27 i f an tongue any one do speak, by two, or at the most, by three, and in turn, and let one interpret;

Si habla alguno en lenguas, que lo hagan dos, o a lo más tres, y por turno; y uno interprete.

28 a nd if there may be no interpreter, let him be silent in an assembly, and to himself let him speak, and to God.

Y si no hay intérprete, calle en la iglesia, y hable para sí mismo y para Dios.

29 A nd prophets -- let two or three speak, and let the others discern,

Asimismo, los profetas hablen dos o tres, y los demás disciernan.

30 a nd if to another sitting may be revealed, let the first be silent;

Y si algo le es revelado a otro que esté sentado, calle el primero.

31 f or ye are able, one by one, all to prophesy, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted,

Porque podéis profetizar todos uno por uno, para que todos aprendan, y todos sean exhortados.

32 a nd the spiritual gift of prophets to prophets are subject,

Y los espíritus de los profetas estén sometidos a los profetas;

33 f or God is not of tumult, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.

pues Dios no es Dios de confusión, sino de paz. Como en todas las iglesias de los santos,

34 Y our women in the assemblies let them be silent, for it hath not been permitted to them to speak, but to be subject, as also the law saith;

vuestras mujeres callen en las congregaciones; porque no les es permitido hablar, sino que estén sometidas, como también la ley lo dice.

35 a nd if they wish to learn anything, at home their own husbands let them question, for it is a shame to women to speak in an assembly.

Y si quieren aprender algo, pregunten en casa a sus maridos; porque es indecoroso para las mujeres el hablar en la congregación.

36 F rom you did the word of God come forth? or to you alone did it come?

¿Acaso ha procedido de vosotros la palabra de Dios, o ha llegado sólo a vosotros?

37 i f any one doth think to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge the things that I write to you -- that of the Lord they are commands;

Si alguno se cree profeta, o espiritual, reconozca que lo que os escribo son mandamientos del Señor.

38 a nd if any one is ignorant -- let him be ignorant;

Pero si alguno lo ignora, que lo ignore.

39 s o that, brethren, earnestly desire to prophesy, and to speak with tongues do not forbid;

Así que, hermanos, anhelad el profetizar, y no impidáis el hablar en lenguas;

40 l et all things be done decently and in order.

pero hágase todo decentemente y con orden.
