1 A nd it came to pass, when Jesus ended directing his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

Cuando Jesús terminó de dar instrucciones a sus doce discípulos, se fue de allí a enseñar y a predicar en las ciudades de ellos.

2 A nd John having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, having sent two of his disciples,

Y al oír Juan, en la cárcel, las obras de Cristo, envió a dos de sus discípulos,

3 s aid to him, `Art thou He who is coming, or for another do we look?'

para preguntarle: ¿Eres tú el que ha de venir, o esperaremos a otro?

4 A nd Jesus answering said to them, `Having gone, declare to John the things that ye hear and see,

Respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Id, e informad a Juan de las cosas que oís y veis.

5 b lind receive sight, and lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and deaf hear, dead are raised, and poor have good news proclaimed,

Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos son limpiados, los sordos oyen, los muertos son resucitados, y a los pobres les es anunciado el evangelio;

6 a nd happy is he who may not be stumbled in me.'

y bienaventurado es el que no tropieza en mí.

7 A nd as they are going, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, `What went ye out to the wilderness to view? -- a reed shaken by the wind?

Mientras ellos se iban, comenzó Jesús a decir de Juan a la gente: ¿Qué salisteis a ver en el desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento?

8 ` But what went ye out to see? -- a man clothed in soft garments? lo, those wearing the soft things are in the kings' houses.

¿Pero qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un hombre cubierto de vestiduras lujosas? He aquí que los que llevan vestiduras lujosas, están en las casas de los reyes.

9 ` But what went ye out to see? -- a prophet? yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet,

Entonces, ¿qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, os digo, y más que profeta.

10 f or this is he of whom it hath been written, Lo, I do send My messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

Porque éste es de quien está escrito: He aquí que yo envío mi mensajero delante de tu faz, El cual preparará tu camino delante de ti.

11 V erily I say to you, there hath not risen, among those born of women, a greater than John the Baptist, but he who is least in the reign of the heavens is greater than he.

De cierto os digo: Entre los que nacen de mujer no se ha levantado otro mayor que Juan el Bautista; pero el que sea menor en el reino de los cielos, es mayor que él.

12 ` And, from the days of John the Baptist till now, the reign of the heavens doth suffer violence, and violent men do take it by force,

Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos sufre violencia, y los violentos lo arrebatan.

13 f or all the prophets and the law till John did prophesy,

Porque todos los profetas y la ley profetizaron hasta Juan.

14 a nd if ye are willing to receive, he is Elijah who was about to come;

Y si queréis recibirlo, él es Elías, el que había de venir.

15 h e who is having ears to hear -- let him hear.

El que tiene oídos para oír, oiga.

16 ` And to what shall I liken this generation? it is like little children in market-places, sitting and calling to their comrades,

Mas ¿a qué compararé esta generación? Es semejante a los muchachos que se sientan en las plazas, y dan voces a sus compañeros,

17 a nd saying, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance, we lamented to you, and ye did not smite the breast.

diciendo: Os tocamos la flauta, y no bailasteis; os entonamos canción de duelo, y no os lamentasteis.

18 ` For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon;

Porque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen: Tiene un demonio.

19 t he Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Lo, a man, a glutton, and a wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners, and wisdom was justified of her children.'

Vino el Hijo del Hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: Mirad un hombre comilón, y bebedor de vino, amigo de publicanos y de pecadores. Pero la sabiduría queda justificada por sus hijos. Ayes sobre las ciudades impenitentes

20 T hen began he to reproach the cities in which were done most of his mighty works, because they did not reform.

Entonces comenzó a reconvenir a las ciudades en las cuales había hecho el mayor número de sus milagros, porque no se habían arrepentido, diciendo:

21 ` Wo to thee, Chorazin! wo to thee, Bethsaida! because, if in Tyre and Sidon had been done the mighty works that were done in you, long ago in sackcloth and ashes they had reformed;

¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida! Porque si en Tiro y en Sidón se hubieran hecho los milagros que han sido hechos en vosotras, ya hace tiempo que se hubieran arrepentido en saco y en ceniza.

22 b ut I say to you, to Tyre and Sidon it shall be more tolerable in a day of judgment than for you.

Por tanto os digo que en el día del juicio, habrá más tolerancia para Tiro y para Sidón, que para vosotras.

23 ` And thou, Capernaum, which unto the heaven wast exalted, unto hades shalt be brought down, because if in Sodom had been done the mighty works that were done in thee, it had remained unto this day;

Y tú, Capernaúm, que eres levantada hasta el cielo, hasta el Hades serás abatida; porque si en Sodoma se hubieran hecho los milagros que han sido hechos en ti, habría permanecido hasta el día de hoy.

24 b ut I say to you, to the land of Sodom it shall be more tolerable in a day of judgment than to thee.'

Por tanto os digo que en el día del juicio, habrá más tolerancia para la tierra de Sodoma, que para ti. Venid a mí y descansad

25 A t that time Jesus answering said, `I do confess to Thee, Father, Lord of the heavens and of the earth, that thou didst hide these things from wise and understanding ones, and didst reveal them to babes.

En aquel tiempo, tomando Jesús la palabra, dijo: Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque ocultaste estas cosas a los sabios y a los entendidos, y las revelaste a los niños.

26 Y es, Father, because so it was good pleasure before Thee.

Sí, Padre, porque así te agradó.

27 ` All things were delivered to me by my Father, and none doth know the Son, except the Father, nor doth any know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son may wish to reveal.

Todas las cosas me fueron entregadas por mi Padre; y nadie conoce perfectamente al Hijo, sino el Padre, y ninguno conoce perfectamente al Padre, sino el Hijo, y aquel a quien el Hijo resuelva revelarlo.

28 ` Come unto me, all ye labouring and burdened ones, and I will give you rest,

Venid a mí todos los que estáis fatigados y cargados, y yo os haré descansar.

29 t ake up my yoke upon you, and learn from me, because I am meek and humble in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls,

Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros, y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón; y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas;

30 f or my yoke easy, and my burden is light.'

porque mi yugo es cómodo, y mi carga ligera.
