1 І встав рано вранці Єруббаал, це Гедеон, та ввесь народ, що з ним, і таборували над Ен-Хародом. А мідіянітянський табір був із півночі від Ґів'ат-Гамморев долині.

Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod. Midian’s camp was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

2 І сказав Господь до Гедеона: Численний той народ, що з тобою, щоб Я дав мідіянітян в його руку, щоб не запишався надо Мною Ізраїль, говорячи: Рука моя спасла мене.

Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

3 А тепер поклич до ушей люду, говорячи: Хто боїться й тремтить, нехай вернеться й відійде від гори Ґілеад. І вернулося з народу двадцять і дві тисячі, а десять тисяч позосталось.

Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

4 І сказав Господь до Гедеона: Ще численний цей народ. Зведи їх до води, і Я там переберу його тобі. І буде, як Я скажу тобі: Цей піде з тобою, той піде з тобою, а кожен, що скажу тобі: Цей не піде з тобою, той не піде.

Yahweh said to Gideon, “There are still too many people. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that those whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.”

5 І привів він народ до води. І сказав Господь до Гедеона: Кожен, хто буде хлептати воду язиком своїм, як хлепче пес, поставиш його окремо. А кожен, хто припаде на коліна свої, щоб пити, поставиш його окремо.

So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.”

6 І було число тих, що хлептали, носячи рукою своєю до уст своїх, три сотні чоловіка, а вся решта народу припали на коліна свої, щоб пити воду.

The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water.

7 І сказав Господь до Гедеона: Трьома сотнями мужів, що хлептали, спасу тебе, і дам мідіянітян у твою руку, а ввесь народ піде кожен на своє місце.

Yahweh said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.”

8 І взяли вони в свою руку поживу народу та свої сурми, а всіх інших ізраїльтян він відпустив, кожного до намету свого, а три сотні мужа затримав. А мідіянітянський табір був під ним у долині.

So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men; and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

9 І сталося тієї ночі, і сказав до нього Господь: Устань, зійди до табору, бо Я дав його в руку твою.

That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go down into the camp; for I have delivered it into your hand.

10 А якщо ти боїшся зійти, зійди ти та Пура, твій слуга, до табору.

But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp.

11 І почуєш, що вони говорять, а потім зміцняться твої руки, і ти зійдеш до табору. І зійшов він та Пура, слуга його, до краю озброєних у таборі.

You will hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened to go down into the camp.” Then went he down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp.

12 А мідіянітяни й амаликитяни та всі сини Кедему лежали в долині, як сарана, щодо численности. А верблюдам їх нема числа, як пісок на березі моря, щодо численности.

The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is on the seashore for multitude.

13 І прийшов Гедеон, аж ось один оповідає другові своєму сон. І він казав: Оце снився мені сон, а ото буханець ячмінного хліба котиться в мідіянітянському таборі. І докотився він аж до намету, та й ударив його, а той упав, і перевернув його догори, і намет той бухнув.

When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow. He said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”

14 І відповів його друг та й сказав: Це ніщо інше, як меч Гедеона, Йоашового сина, мужа Ізраїльського, Бог дав у його руку мідіянітян та ввесь табір.

His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.”

15 І сталося, як Гедеон почув оповідання про той сон та розгадку його, то вклонився, і вернувся до Ізраїлевого табору та й сказав: Уставайте, бо Господь дав у вашу руку мідіянітянський табір!

It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped. Then he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise; for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!”

16 І поділив він три сотні тих мужів на три відділи, і дав у руку їх усіх сурми, і порожні глеки, та смолоскипи до середини тих глеків.

He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.

17 І сказав він до них: Що будете бачити від мене, то й ви так зробите. А ось я піду до краю табору, і буде, як я зроблю, так зробите й ви.

He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.

18 І засурмлю в сурму я та всі, що зо мною, то засурмите в сурми й ви навколо всього табору, та й скажете: меч за Господа та за Гедеона!

When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’”

19 І прийшов Гедеон та сотня мужів, що з ним, до краю табору, на початку середньої сторожі, коли тільки но поставили сторожу. І засурмили вони в сурми, і побили глеки, що в їхніх руках.

So Gideon, and the hundred men who were with him, came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch. Then they blew the trumpets, and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

20 І засурмили три відділи в сурми, і поторощили глеки, і тримали рукою своєї лівиці смолоскипа, а рукою своєї правиці сурми, щоб сурмити. І кричали вони: Меч за Господа та за Гедеона!

The three companies blew the trumpets, broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!”

21 І стояли кожен на своїм місці навколо табору, а ввесь табір бігав, і вони кричали й утікали.

They each stood in his place around the camp; and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight.

22 І засурмили три сотні сурем, а Господь обернув меча одного на одного та на ввесь табір. І табір побіг аж до Бет-Гашшітта до Церери, аж до Сефат-Авел-Мехоли при Таббаті.

They blew the three hundred trumpets, and Yahweh set every man’s sword against his fellow, and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.

23 І були скликані ізраїльтяни з Нефталиму, і з Асиру, і з усього Манасії, і вони гналися за мідіянітянами.

The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued Midian.

24 А по всіх Єфремових горах Гедеон послав послів, говорячи: Зійдіть навперейми мідіянітян, і заступіть їм воду аж до Бет-Бари та Йордан. І скликали всіх Єфремових людей, та й заступили воду аж до Бет-Бари та Йордан.

Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan.

25 І вони захопили двох мідіянітянських князів: Орева та Зеева, і вбили Орева в Цур-Ореві, а Зеева вбили в Екев-Зееві. І гналися за мідіянітянами, а голови Орева та Зеева перенесли до Гедеона на той бік Йордану.

They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at Oreb’s rock, and Zeeb they killed at Zeeb’s wine press; and pursued Midian. Then they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
