3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,

Дякую Богові своєму при кожній згадці про вас,

4 a lways offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all,

і завжди в усякій молитві своїй за всіх вас чиню я молитву з радощами,

5 i n view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.

за участь вашу в Євангелії від першого дня аж дотепер.

6 F or I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Я певний того, що той, хто в вас розпочав добре діло, виконає його аж до дня Христа Ісуса.

7 F or it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me.

Бо то справедливо мені думати це про всіх вас, бо я маю вас у серці, а ви всі в кайданах моїх, і в обороні, і в утвердженні Євангелії спільники мої в благодаті.

8 F or God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.

Бо Бог мені свідок, що тужу я за вами всіма в сердечній любові Христа Ісуса.

9 A nd this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment,

І молюсь я про те, щоб ваша любов примножалась ще більше та більше в пізнанні й усякім дослідженні,

10 s o that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;

щоб ви досліджували те, що краще, щоб чисті та цілі були Христового дня,

11 h aving been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. The Gospel Is Preached

наповнені плодів праведности через Ісуса Христа, на славу та на хвалу Божу.

12 N ow I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel,

Бажаю ж я, браття, щоб відали ви, що те, що сталось мені, вийшло більше на успіх Євангелії,

13 s o that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else,

бо в усій преторії та всім іншим стали відомі кайдани мої за Христа.

14 a nd that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.

А багато братів у Господі через кайдани мої посміліли та ще більше відважилися Слово Боже звіщати безстрашно.

15 S ome, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will;

Одні, правда, і через заздрощі та колотнечу, другі ж із доброї волі Христа проповідують;

16 t he latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel;

а інші з любови, знаючи, що я поставлений на оборону Євангелії;

17 t he former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment.

а інші через підступ звіщають Христа нещиро, думаючи, що додадуть тягару до кайданів моїх.

18 W hat then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

Але що ж? У всякому разі, чи облудно, чи щиро, Христос проповідується, а тим я радію та й буду радіти.

19 f or I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

Бо знаю, що це буде мені на спасіння через вашу молитву й допомогу Духа Ісуса Христа,

20 a ccording to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. To Live Is Christ

через чекання й надію мою, що я ні в чому не буду посоромлений, але цілою сміливістю, як завжди, так і тепер Христос буде звеличений у тілі моїм, чи то життям, чи то смертю.

21 F or to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Бо для мене життя то Христос, а смерть то надбання.

22 B ut if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose.

А коли життя в тілі то для мене плід діла, то не знаю, що вибрати.

23 B ut I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better;

Тягнуть мене одне й друге, хоч я маю бажання померти та бути з Христом, бо це значно ліпше.

24 y et to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

А щоб полишатися в тілі, то це потрібніш ради вас.

25 C onvinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith,

І оце знаю певно, що залишусь я, і пробуватиму з вами всіма вам на користь та на радощі в вірі,

26 s o that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.

щоб ваша хвала через мене примножилася в Христі Ісусі, коли знову прийду я до вас.

27 O nly conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

Тільки живіть згідно з Христовою Євангелією, щоб, чи прийду я й побачу вас, чи й не бувши почув я про вас, що ви стоїте в однім дусі, борючись однодушно за віру євангельську,

28 i n no way alarmed by your opponents—which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God.

і ні в чому не боячися противників; це їм доказ загибелі, вам же спасіння. А це від Бога!

29 F or to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,

Бо вчинено вам за Христа добродійство, не тільки вірувати в Нього, але і страждати за Нього,

30 e xperiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

маючи таку саму боротьбу, яку ви бачили в мені, а тепер чуєте про мене.
