1 T hen Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the sons of the east.

І зібрався Яків, і пішов до краю синів Кедему.

2 H e looked, and saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep were lying there beside it, for from that well they watered the flocks. Now the stone on the mouth of the well was large.

І побачив, аж ось криниця в полі, і ото там три отарі лежали біля неї, бо з тієї криниці напувають стада. А на отворі криниці лежав великий камінь.

3 W hen all the flocks were gathered there, they would then roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the mouth of the well.

І збирались туди всі стада, і скочували каменя з отвору криниці, і напоювали отару, і привалювали каменя на отвір криниці знов на його місце.

4 J acob said to them, “My brothers, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from Haran.”

І сказав до пастухів Яків: Браття мої, звідкіля ви? А ті відказали: Ми з Харану.

5 H e said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” And they said, “We know him.”

І сказав їм: Чи ви знаєте Лавана, сина Нахорового? І відказали: Знаємо.

6 A nd he said to them, “Is it well with him?” And they said, “It is well, and here is Rachel his daughter coming with the sheep.”

І сказав їм: Чи гаразд із ним? І відказали: Гаразд. А ось Рахіль, дочка його, приходить з отарою.

7 H e said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered. Water the sheep, and go, pasture them.”

І сказав: Тож іще багато дня, не час зганяти худобу. Напійте отару, та йдіть пасіть.

8 B ut they said, “We cannot, until all the flocks are gathered, and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.”

А вони відказали: Не можемо, аж поки не будуть зігнані всі стада, і не відкотять каменя з отвору криниці, тоді понапуваємо отару.

9 W hile he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

Іще він говорив із ними, аж ось приходить Рахіль з отарою батька свого, бо була вона пастушка.

10 W hen Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, Jacob went up and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.

І сталося, коли Яків побачив Рахіль, дочку Лавана, брата своєї матері, то підійшов Яків і відкотив каменя з отвору криниці, і напоїв отару Лавана, брата матері своєї.

11 T hen Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted his voice and wept.

І поцілував Яків Рахіль, і підніс свій голос, і заплакав...

12 J acob told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and that he was Rebekah’s son, and she ran and told her father.

І Яків оповів Рахілі, що він брат батька її, і що він син Ревеки. А та побігла, і розповіла батькові своєму...

13 S o when Laban heard the news of Jacob his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Then he related to Laban all these things.

І сталося, коли Лаван почув вістку про Якова, сина сестри своєї, то побіг йому назустріч, і обняв його, і поцілував його, і привів його до свого дому. А він розповів Лаванові про всі ті пригоди.

14 L aban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” And he stayed with him a month.

І промовив до нього Лаван: Поправді, ти кість моя й тіло моє! І сидів він із ним місяць часу.

15 T hen Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”

І сказав Лаван до Якова: Чи тому, що ти брат мій, то ти будеш служити мені даремно? Скажи ж мені, яка плата тобі?

16 N ow Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

А в Лавана було дві дочки: ім'я старшій Лія, а ім'я молодшій Рахіль.

17 A nd Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful of form and face.

Очі ж Ліїні були хворі, а Рахіль була гарного стану та вродливого вигляду.

18 N ow Jacob loved Rachel, so he said, “ I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”

І покохав Яків Рахіль, та й сказав: Я буду сім літ служити тобі за Рахіль, молодшу дочку твою.

19 L aban said, “It is better that I give her to you than to give her to another man; stay with me.”

І промовив Лаван: Краще мені віддати її тобі, аніж віддати мені її іншому чоловікові. Сиди ж зо мною!

20 S o Jacob served seven years for Rachel and they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her. Laban’s Treachery

І служив Яків за Рахіль сім літ, а вони через любов його до неї були в його очах, як кілька днів.

21 T hen Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my time is completed, that I may go in to her.”

І сказав Яків Лаванові: Дай мені жінку мою, бо виповнилися мої дні, і нехай я до неї ввійду!

22 L aban gathered all the men of the place and made a feast.

І зібрав Лаван усіх людей тієї місцевости, і справив гостину.

23 N ow in the evening he took his daughter Leah, and brought her to him; and Jacob went in to her.

І сталося ввечері, і взяв він дочку свою Лію, і до нього впровадив її. І Яків із нею зійшовся.

24 L aban also gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid.

А Лаван дав їй Зілпу, невільницю свою, дав Лії, дочці своїй, за невільницю.

25 S o it came about in the morning that, behold, it was Leah! And he said to Laban, “ What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Why then have you deceived me?”

А вранці виявилося, що то була Лія! І промовив Яків до Лавана: Що це ти вчинив мені? Хіба не за Рахіль працював я в тебе? Нащо ж обманив ти мене?

26 B ut Laban said, “It is not the practice in our place to marry off the younger before the firstborn.

А Лаван відказав: У нашій місцевості не робиться так, щоб віддавати молодшу перед старшою.

27 C omplete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which you shall serve with me for another seven years.”

Виповни тиждень для цієї, і буде дана тобі також та, за працю, що будеш працювати в мене ще сім літ других.

28 J acob did so and completed her week, and he gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife.

І зробив Яків так, і виповнив тиждень для цієї. І він дав йому Рахіль, дочку свою, дав йому за жінку.

29 L aban also gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maid.

І дав Лаван Рахілі, дочці своїй, Білгу, невільницю свою, дав їй за невільницю.

30 S o Jacob went in to Rachel also, and indeed he loved Rachel more than Leah, and he served with Laban for another seven years.

І прийшов він також до Рахілі, і покохав також Рахіль, більше, як Лію. І працював у нього ще сім літ других.

31 N ow the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, and He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

І побачив Господь, що зненавиджена Лія, і відкрив її утробу, а Рахіль була неплідна.

32 L eah conceived and bore a son and named him Reuben, for she said, “Because the Lord has seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.”

І завагітніла Лія, і сина породила, і назвала ім'я йому: Рувим, бо сказала була: Господь споглянув на недолю мою, бо тепер покохає мене чоловік мій!

33 T hen she conceived again and bore a son and said, “ Because the Lord has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.

І завагітніла вона ще, і сина породила, і сказала: Господь почув, що я зненавиджена, і дав мені також цього. І назвала ймення йому: Симеон.

34 S he conceived again and bore a son and said, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named Levi.

І завагітніла вона ще, і сина породила, і сказала: Тепер оцим разом буде до мене прилучений мій чоловік, бо я трьох синів породила йому. Тому й назвала ім'я йому: Левій.

35 A nd she conceived again and bore a son and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.

І завагітніла вона ще, і сина породила, і сказала: Тим разом я буду хвалити Господа! Тому назвала ім'я йому: Юда. Та й перестала роджати.
