1 ¶ Estaba entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.

A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in the town of Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.

2 ( Y María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con ungüento, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos).

This was the Mary who put perfume on the Lord and dried His feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.

3 E nviaron, pues, sus hermanas a él, diciendo: Señor, he aquí, el que amas está enfermo.

The sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, “Lord, your friend is sick!”

4 Y oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.

When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. It has happened so that it will bring honor to God. And the Son of God will be honored by it also.” Jesus Tells of the Death of Lazarus

5 Y amaba Jesús a Marta, y a su hermana, y a Lázaro.

Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 C uando oyó pues que estaba enfermo, permaneció aún dos días en aquel lugar donde estaba.

But when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was two more days.

7 L uego, después de esto, dijo a sus discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez.

Then He said to His followers, “Let us go into the country of Judea again.”

8 L e dicen los discípulos: Rabí, antes procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?

The followers said to Him, “Teacher, the Jews tried to throw stones at You to kill You not long ago. Are You going there again?”

9 R espondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anduviere de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo.

Jesus said, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walks during the day, he will not fall. He sees the light of this world.

10 M as el que anduviere de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.

If a man walks during the night, he will fall. The light is not in him.”

11 D icho esto, les dice después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy a despertarle del sueño.

After Jesus had said this, He spoke again and said, “Our friend Lazarus is sleeping. I will go and wake him up.”

12 L e dijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, salvo estará.

The followers said to Him, “If he is sleeping, he will get well.”

13 M as esto decía Jesús de la muerte de él; y ellos pensaron que hablaba del sueño de dormir.

But Jesus meant Lazarus was dead. They thought He meant Lazarus was resting in sleep.

14 E ntonces, pues, Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro ha muerto;

Then Jesus said to them, “Lazarus is dead.

15 y me alegro por vosotros, que yo no haya estado allí, para que creáis; mas vamos a él.

Because of you I am glad I was not there so that you may believe. Come, let us go to him.”

16 D ijo entonces Tomás, el que se dice el Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él.

Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to the other followers, “Let us go also so we may die with Jesus.” Jesus Tells That the Grave Will Not Hold the Dead

17 ¶ Vino pues Jesús, y halló que hacía ya cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro.

When Jesus got there, He heard that Lazarus had been in the grave four days.

18 Y Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como quince estadios;

Bethany was about one-half hour walk from Jerusalem.

19 y muchos de los judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, a consolarlas de su hermano.

Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give words of comfort about their brother.

20 E ntonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús venía, salió a recibirle; mas María se estuvo en la casa.

Martha heard that Jesus was coming and went to meet Him. Mary stayed in the house.

21 Y Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto;

Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

22 m as también sé ahora, que todo lo que pidieres de Dios, te dará Dios.

I know even now God will give You whatever You ask.”

23 L e dice Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano.

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 M arta le dice: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el día postrero.

Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again when the dead are raised from the grave on the last day.”

25 L e dice Jesús: YO SOY la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá.

Jesus said to her, “I am the One Who raises the dead and gives them life. Anyone who puts his trust in Me will live again, even if he dies.

26 Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?

Anyone who lives and has put his trust in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

27 L e dice: Sí Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo.

She answered, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God. You are the One Who was to come into the world.” Lazarus Is Raised from the Dead

28 Y dicho esto, se fue, y llamó en secreto a María su hermana, diciendo: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.

After Martha said this, she went and called her sister Mary. She said without anyone else hearing, “The Teacher is here and has sent for you.”

29 E lla, cuando lo oyó, se levantó prestamente y vino a él.

When Mary heard this, she got up and went to Him.

30 ( Que aún no había llegado Jesús a la aldea, mas estaba en aquel lugar donde Marta le había salido a recibir.)

Jesus had not yet come into their town. He was still where Martha had met Him.

31 E ntonces los judíos que estaban en casa con ella, y la consolaban, como vieron que María se había levantado prestamente, y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí.

The Jews had been in the house comforting Mary. They saw her get up and hurry out. They followed her and said, “She is going to the grave to cry there.”

32 M as María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, se derribó a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no hubiera muerto mi hermano.

Mary went to the place where Jesus was. When she saw Him, she got down at His feet. She said to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33 ¶ Jesús entonces, como la vio llorando, y a los judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, se embraveció en Espíritu, se alborotó a sí mismo,

Jesus saw her crying. The Jews who came with her were crying also. His heart was very sad and He was troubled.

34 y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Le dicen: Señor, ven, y ve.

He said, “Where did you lay Lazarus?” They said, “Lord, come and see.”

35 Y lloró Jesús.

Then Jesus cried.

36 D ijeron entonces los judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba.

The Jews said, “See how much He loved Lazarus.”

37 Y unos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste que abrió los ojos al ciego, hacer que éste no muriera?

Some of them said, “This Man opened the eyes of the blind man. Could He not have kept this man from dying?”

38 Y Jesús, por eso, embraveciéndose otra vez en sí mismo, vino al sepulcro donde había una cueva, la cual tenía una piedra encima.

Jesus went to the grave with a sad heart. The grave was a hole in the side of a hill. A stone covered the door.

39 D ice Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que se había muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya, que es de cuatro días.

Jesus said, “Take the stone away.” The dead man’s sister, Martha, said to Him, “Lord, by now his body has a bad smell. He has been dead four days.”

40 J esús le dice: ¿No te he dicho que, si creyeres, verás la gloria de Dios?

Jesus said to her, “Did I not say that if you would believe, you would see the shining-greatness of God?”

41 E ntonces quitaron la piedra de donde el muerto había sido puesto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos arriba, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy que me has oído.

They took the stone away. Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank You for hearing Me.

42 Q ue yo sabía que siempre me oyes; mas por causa de la compañía que está alrededor, lo dije, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

I know You always hear Me. But I have said this for the people standing here, so they may believe You have sent Me.”

43 Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó a gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera.

When He had said this, He called with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

44 E ntonces el que había estado muerto, salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Les dice Jesús: Desatadle, y dejadle ir.

The man who had been dead came out. His hands and feet were tied in grave clothes. A white cloth was tied around his face. Jesus said to the people, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go!” The Proud Religious Law-Keepers Try to Think of a Way to Kill Jesus

45 ¶ Entonces muchos de los judíos que habían venido a María, y habían visto lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él.

Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus had done put their trust in Him.

46 M as unos de ellos fueron a los fariseos, y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.

Some of them went to the proud religious law-keepers and told them what Jesus had done.

47 Y los sumo sacerdotes y los fariseos juntaron concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre hace muchas señales.

The religious leaders of the Jews and the proud religious law-keepers gathered a court together. They said, “What will we do? This Man is doing many powerful works.

48 S i le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los romanos, y quitarán nuestro lugar y la nación.

If we let Him keep doing these things, all men will put their trust in Him. The Romans will come and take away the house of God and our nation.”

49 Y Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;

Caiaphas was the head religious leader that year. He said to them, “You know nothing about this.

50 n i pensáis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación se pierda.

Do you not see it is better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed?”

51 M as esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que, como era el sumo sacerdote de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación;

Caiaphas did not think of these words himself. He spoke what God had said would happen. He was telling before it happened that Jesus must die for the nation.

52 y no solamente por aquella nación, mas también para que juntara en uno los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.

He must die not only for the nation, but also to bring together into one group the children of God who were living in many places.

53 A sí que, desde aquel día consultaban juntos para matarle.

From that day on they talked together about how they might kill Jesus.

54 D e manera que Jesús ya no andaba manifiestamente entre los judíos; mas se fue de allí a la tierra que está junto al desierto, a una ciudad que se llama Efraín; y se estaba allí con sus discípulos.

For this reason Jesus did not walk out in the open among the Jews. He went to a town called Ephraim. It was near a desert. He stayed there with His followers. The Proud Religious Law-Keepers Look for Jesus

55 Y la Pascua de los judíos estaba cerca; y muchos subieron de la tierra a Jerusalén antes de la Pascua, para purificarse;

The special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt was soon. Many people from around the country came up to Jerusalem to go through the religious washing before the special supper.

56 y buscaban a Jesús, y hablaban los unos con los otros estando en el Templo: ¿Qué os parece? ¿Qué no vendrá a la fiesta?

They looked for Jesus. They stood together in the house of God and asked each other, “What do you think? Will He come to the special supper?”

57 Y los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado mandamiento, que si alguno se enteraba dónde estaba, lo manifestara, para que le prendieran.

The religious leaders of the Jews and the proud religious law-keepers had said that if any man knew where Jesus was, he should tell them. They wanted to take Him.
