1 ¶ Mirad cuál caridad nos ha dado el Padre, que seamos llamados hijos de Dios; por esto el mundo no nos conoce, porque no le conoce a él.

See what great love the Father has for us that He would call us His children. And that is what we are. For this reason the people of the world do not know who we are because they did not know Him.

2 M uy amados, ahora somos hijos de Dios, y aun no es manifestado lo que hemos de ser; pero sabemos que si él apareciere, seremos semejantes a él, porque le veremos como él es.

Dear friends, we are God’s children now. But it has not yet been shown to us what we are going to be. We know that when He comes again, we will be like Him because we will see Him as He is.

3 Y cualquiera que tiene esta esperanza en él, se purifica, como él también es limpio.

The person who is looking for this to happen will keep himself pure because Christ is pure.

4 ¶ Cualquiera que hace pecado, traspasa también la ley; y el pecado es transgresión de la Ley.

The person who keeps on sinning is guilty of not obeying the Law of God. For sin is breaking the Law of God.

5 Y sabéis que él apareció para quitar nuestros pecados, y no hay pecado en él.

You know that Christ came to take away our sins. There is no sin in Him.

6 C ualquiera que permanece en él, no peca; cualquiera que peca, no le ha visto, ni le ha conocido.

The person who lives by the help of Christ does not keep on sinning. The person who keeps on sinning has not seen Him or has not known Him.

7 H ijitos, no os engañe ninguno; el que hace justicia, es justo, como él también es justo.

My children, let no one lead you in the wrong way. The man who does what is right, is right with God in the same way as Christ is right with God.

8 E l que hace pecado, es del diablo, porque el diablo peca desde el principio. Para esto apareció el Hijo de Dios, para deshacer las obras del diablo.

The person who keeps on sinning belongs to the devil. The devil has sinned from the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

9 C ualquiera que es nacido de Dios, no hace pecado, porque su simiente está en él; y no puede pecar, porque es nacido de Dios.

No person who has become a child of God keeps on sinning. This is because the Holy Spirit is in him. He cannot keep on sinning because God is his Father.

10 E n esto son manifiestos los hijos de Dios, y los hijos del diablo; cualquiera que no hace justicia, y que no ama a su Hermano, no es de Dios.

This is the way you can know who are the children of God and who are the children of the devil. The person who does not keep on doing what is right and does not love his brother does not belong to God.

11 ¶ Porque, esta es la anunciación que habéis oído desde el principio: Que nos amemos unos a otros.

This is what you have heard from the beginning, that we should love each other.

12 N o como Caín, que era del maligno, y mató a su hermano. ¿Y por qué causa le mató? Porque sus obras eran malas, y las de su Hermano eran justas.

Do not be like Cain. He was a child of the devil and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? It was because he did what was sinful and his brother did what was right.

13 H ermanos míos, no os maravilléis si el mundo os aborrece.

Do not be surprised if the world hates you, Christian brothers.

14 ¶ Nosotros sabemos que somos pasados de muerte a vida, en que amamos a los Hermanos. El que no ama a su Hermano, permanece en muerte.

We know we have passed from death into life. We know this because we love the Christians. The person who does not love has not passed from death into life.

15 C ualquiera que aborrece a su Hermano, es homicida; y sabéis que ningún homicida tiene vida eterna permanente en sí.

A man who hates his brother is a killer in his heart. You know that life which lasts forever is not in one who kills.

16 E n esto hemos conocido la caridad de Dios, en que él puso su vida por nosotros; también nosotros debemos poner nuestras vidas por los Hermanos.

We know what love is because Christ gave His life for us. We should give our lives for our brothers.

17 M as el que tuviere bienes de este mundo, y viere a su hermano tener necesidad, y le cerrare sus entrañas, ¿cómo permanece la caridad de Dios en él?

What if a person has enough money to live on and sees his brother in need of food and clothing? If he does not help him, how can the love of God be in him?

18 H ijitos míos, no amemos de palabra ni de lengua, sino con obra y de verdad.

My children, let us not love with words or in talk only. Let us love by what we do and in truth.

19 Y en esto conocemos que somos de la verdad, y tenemos nuestros corazones certificados delante de él.

This is how we know we are Christians. It will give our heart comfort for sure when we stand before Him.

20 ¶ Y si nuestro corazón nos reprende, mayor es Dios que nuestro corazón, y conoce todas las cosas.

Our heart may say that we have done wrong. But remember, God is greater than our heart. He knows everything.

21 C arísimos, si nuestro corazón no nos reprende, confianza tenemos en Dios;

Dear friends, if our heart does not say that we are wrong, we will have no fear as we stand before Him.

22 y cualquier cosa que pidiéremos, la recibiremos de él, porque guardamos sus mandamientos, y hacemos las cosas que son agradables delante de él.

We will receive from Him whatever we ask if we obey Him and do what He wants.

23 ¶ Y éste es su mandamiento: Que creamos en el nombre de su Hijo Jesucristo, y nos amemos unos a otros como nos lo ha mandado.

This is what He said we must do: Put your trust in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love each other. Christ told us to do this.

24 Y el que guarda sus mandamientos, está en él, y él en él. Y en esto sabemos que él permanece en nosotros, por el Espíritu que nos ha dado.

The person who obeys Christ lives by the help of God and God lives in him. We know He lives in us by the Holy Spirit He has given us.
