1 ¶ Y fue Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal a Siquem, a los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:

Jerubbaal’s son Abimelech went to his mother’s family at Shechem. He said to them and to all those of the family of his mother’s father,

2 Y o os ruego que habléis a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem: ¿Qué os parece por mejor, que os señoreen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal; o que os señoree un varón? Acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra.

“Speak to all the leaders of Shechem. Say to them, ‘Which is better for you? Should all seventy of Jerubbaal’s sons rule over you? Or should one man rule over you? Remember that I am your own bone and flesh.’”

3 Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem todas estas palabras; y el corazón de ellos se inclinó en favor de Abimelec, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es.

So his mother’s family spoke all these words for him in the ears of the leaders of Shechem. And they decided to follow Abimelech. For they said, “He is our brother.”

4 Y le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con los cuales Abimelec alquiló varones vacíos y livianos, que le siguieron.

They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the family of Baal-berith. Abimelech used the money to hire wild men of no worth who followed him.

5 Y viniendo a la casa de su padre en Ofra, mató a sus hermanos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta varones, sobre una piedra; mas quedó Jotam, el más pequeño hijo de Jerobaal, que se escondió.

Then he went to his father’s house at Ophrah. And he killed his brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal. He killed all seventy men upon one stone. But Jerubbaal’s youngest son Jotham was left alive, because he hid himself.

6 Y reunidos todos los señores de Siquem con toda la casa de Milo (la congregación), fueron y eligieron a Abimelec por rey, cerca de la llanura del pilar que estaba en Siquem.

Then all the men of Shechem and of Beth-millo gathered together. They went and made Abimelech king, by the tree that had been set up in Shechem.

7 ¶ Cuando se lo dijeron a Jotam, fue y se puso en la cumbre del monte de Gerizim, y alzando su voz clamó, y les dijo: Oídme, varones de Siquem; que Dios os oiga.

When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim. He called out to them in a loud voice, “Listen to me, O men of Shechem. So God may listen to you.

8 F ueron los árboles a ungir rey sobre sí, y le dijeron al olivo: Reina sobre nosotros.

One time the trees went out to choose a king to rule them. They said to the olive tree, ‘Rule over us!’

9 M as el olivo respondió: ¿He de dejar mi grosura, con el que por mi causa Dios y los hombres son honrados, por ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?

But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my riches of oil by which God and men are honored, and go to wave over the trees?’

10 Y dijeron los árboles a la higuera: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.

Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and rule over us!’

11 Y respondió la higuera: ¿He de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, por ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?

But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my good sweet fruit, and go to wave over the trees?’

12 D ijeron luego los árboles a la vid: Pues ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.

So the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and rule over us!’

13 Y la vid les respondió: ¿He de dejar mi mosto, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, por ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?

But the vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine which makes God and men happy, and go to wave over the trees?’

14 D ijeron entonces todos los árboles al escaramujo: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.

Then all the trees said to the thorn bush, ‘You come and rule over us!’

15 Y el escaramujo respondió a los árboles: Si en verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, venid, y aseguraos debajo de mi sombra; y si no, fuego salga del escaramujo que devore los cedros del Líbano.

And the thorn bush said to the trees, ‘If in truth you are choosing me as king over you, come and be safe in my shadow. But if not, may fire come out of the thorn bush and burn up the tall trees of Lebanon.’

16 A hora pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey a Abimelec, y si lo habéis hecho bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme a la obra de sus manos;

“Now it may be that you have acted in truth and honor in making Abimelech king. It may be that you have acted well toward Jerubbaal and his house, by paying him for what he did.

17 ( Pues que mi padre peleó por vosotros, y echó lejos su vida por libraros de la mano de Madián;

For my father fought for you. He put his life in danger to set you free from the power of Midian.

18 y vosotros os levantasteis hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y matasteis a sus hijos, setenta varones, sobre una piedra; y habéis puesto por rey sobre los señores de Siquem a Abimelec, hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano);

But you have gone against my father’s house today. You have killed seventy of his sons on one stone. Abimelech is the son of my father’s woman servant. And you have made him king over the people of Shechem, because he is your brother.

19 s i con verdad y con integridad habéis obrado hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abimelec, y él goce de vosotros.

If you have acted in truth and honor toward Jerubbaal and his house today, then be happy with Abimelech. And let him be happy with you.

20 Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelec, que consuma a los señores de Siquem y a la casa de Milo; y fuego salga de los de Siquem y de la casa de Milo, que consuma a Abimelec.

But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and burn up the people of Shechem and Beth-millo. Then let it burn up Abimelech.”

21 Y huyó Jotam, se fugó, y se fue a Beer, y allí estuvo por causa de Abimelec su hermano.

Jotham ran away from them and went to Beer. He stayed there, because he was afraid of his brother Abimelech.

22 ¶ Y después que Abimelec hubo dominado sobre Israel tres años,

Abimelech ruled over Israel for three years.

23 e nvió Dios un espíritu malo entre Abimelec y los señores de Siquem; que los de Siquem se levantaron contra Abimelec;

Then God sent a bad spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem. The men of Shechem were not faithful to Abimelech.

24 p ara que el agravio de los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y la sangre de ellos, viniera a ponerse sobre Abimelec su hermano que los mató, y sobre los señores de Siquem que corroboraron las manos de él para matar a sus hermanos.

God did this to punish Abimelech and the men of Shechem, because the seventy sons of Jerubbaal were killed by their brother Abimelech. And the men of Shechem gave him the strength to do it.

25 Y los señores de Siquem le pusieron asechadores en las cumbres de los montes, los cuales robaban a todos los que pasaban junto a ellos por el camino; de esto fue dado aviso a Abimelec.

The men of Shechem went against Abimelech by hiding men on the mountain tops. They robbed all who passed by them on the road. Abimelech was told about it.

26 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed vino con sus hermanos, y se pasaron a Siquem; y los señores de Siquem se confiaron en él.

Now Gaal the son of Ebed moved with his family into Shechem. And the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

27 Y saliendo al campo, vendimiaron sus viñas, y pisaron la uva, e hicieron alegrías; y entrando en el templo de sus dioses, comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abimelec.

They went out into the field and gathered the grapes of their vines and crushed them. Then they had a special supper in the house of their god. They ate and drank and wished bad to come to Abimelech.

28 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo: ¿Quién es Abimelec y qué es Siquem, para que nosotros le sirvamos a él? ¿No es hijo de Jerobaal? ¿Y no es Zebul su asistente? Servid a los varones de Hamor padre de Siquem. ¿Por qué habíamos de servirle a él?

Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech? And who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal? Is not Zebul his leader? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve Abimelech?

29 F uérame dado este pueblo bajo mi mano, yo echaría luego a Abimelec. Y decía a Abimelec: Aumenta tu ejército, y sal.

If only these people were under my rule! Then I would send Abimelech away. I would say to Abimelech, ‘Make your army strong, and come out.’”

30 Y Zebul, príncipe de la ciudad, oyendo las palabras de Gaal hijo de Ebed, se encendió su ira;

When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, he was very angry.

31 y envió sagazmente mensajeros a Abimelec, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem, y he aquí, que han cercado la ciudad contra ti.

He sent men to bring news to Abimelech in secret. They said, “See, Gaal the son of Ebed has come to Shechem with his family. They are turning the city against you.

32 L evántate pues ahora de noche, tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscada en el campo.

So you and the people who are with you get up during the night and hide in the field.

33 Y por la mañana al salir el sol te levantarás y acometerás la ciudad; y él y el pueblo que está con él saldrán contra ti, y tú harás con él según que se te ofrecerá.

Then get up early in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, and rush against the city. When Gaal and the people who are with him come out against you, do whatever you can to them.”

34 L evantándose, pues, de noche Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías.

So Abimelech and all who were with him got up during the night. They hid and waited in four groups to fight against Shechem.

35 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed salió, y se puso a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, se levantaron de la emboscada.

Gaal the son of Ebed came out and stood in the city gate. And Abimelech and the people who were with him came out of their hiding places.

36 Y viendo Gaal el pueblo, dijo a Zebul: He allí pueblo que desciende de las cumbres de los montes. Y Zebul le respondió: La sombra de los montes te parece como hombres.

When Gaal saw the men, he said to Zebul, “See, men are coming down from the mountain tops!” But Zebul said to him, “It is the shadow of the mountains that looks like men to you.”

37 M as Gaal volvió a hablar, y dijo: He allí pueblo que desciende por en medio de la tierra, y un escuadrón que viene camino de la campiña de Meonenim.

Gaal spoke again, saying, “See, men are coming down from the highest part of the land. One group is coming on the way from the oak tree of those who tell the future.”

38 Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está ahora aquel dicho que decías: Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos? ¿No es éste el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues ahora, y pelea con él.

Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your proud talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Are these not the men whom you hated? Go out now and fight with them!”

39 Y Gaal salió delante de los señores de Siquem, y peleó contra Abimelec.

So Gaal went out in front of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech.

40 M as lo persiguió Abimelec, delante del cual él huyó; y cayeron heridos muchos hasta la entrada de la puerta.

Abimelech went after Gaal. And Gaal ran away from him. Many were hurt and fell all the way to the gate.

41 Y Abimelec se quedó en Aruma; y Zebul echó fuera a Gaal y a sus hermanos, para que no moraran en Siquem.

Abimelech stayed at Arumah. But Zebul drove out Gaal and his family so they could not stay in Shechem.

42 Y aconteció al siguiente día, que el pueblo salió al campo; y fue dado aviso a Abimelec.

The men went out to the field the next day and told Abimelech.

43 E l cual, tomando a su gente, la repartió en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo; y cuando miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad; y se levantó contra ellos, y los hirió.

So he took his men and divided them into three groups, and they waited in the field. When he saw Gaal’s people coming out of the city, Abimelech went against them and killed them.

44 P ues Abimelec y el escuadrón que estaba con él, acometieron con ímpetu, y se detuvieron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y las otras dos compañías acometieron a todos los que estaban en el campo, y los hirieron.

Abimelech and the group with him rushed and stood in the city gate. The other two groups then rushed against all who were in the field and killed them.

45 Y después de combatir Abimelec la ciudad todo aquel día, la tomó, y mató al pueblo que en ella estaba, y asoló la ciudad, y la sembró de sal.

Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He took the city and killed the people who were in it. Then he destroyed the city and covered it with salt.

46 C uando oyeron esto todos los de la torre de Siquem, entraron en la fortaleza del templo del dios Berit.

All the leaders of the tower of Shechem heard about it. And they went into the inside room of the house of the god of El-berith.

47 Y fue dicho a Abimelec como todos los de la torre de Siquem estaban reunidos.

Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48 E ntonces subió Abimelec al monte de Salmón, él y toda la gente que con él estaba; y tomó Abimelec un hacha en su mano, y cortó una rama de los árboles, y levantándola se la puso sobre sus hombros, diciendo al pueblo que estaba con él: Lo que me veis a mí que hago, hacedlo vosotros prestamente como yo.

So Abimelech and all who were with him went up to Mount Zalmon. Abimelech took an ax in his hand and cut down a branch from the trees. Then he lifted it onto his shoulder. He said to the men who were with him, “Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”

49 Y así todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron a Abimelec, y las pusieron junto a la fortaleza, y prendieron fuego con ellas a la fortaleza; de manera que todos los de la torre de Siquem murieron, como unos mil hombres y mujeres.

So each of the men cut down his branch also, and followed Abimelech. They put the branches around the inside room and set it on fire. So all the men of the tower of Shechem died. There were about 1, 000 men and women in all.

50 ¶ Después Abimelec se fue a Tebes; y puso cerco a Tebes, y la tomó.

Then Abimelech went to Thebez. He fought against it and took it.

51 E n medio de aquella ciudad había una torre fuerte, a la cual se retiraron todos los hombres y mujeres, y todos los señores de la ciudad; y cerrando tras sí las puertas, subieron al techo de la torre.

But there was a strong tower in the center of the city. All the men and women and leaders of the city ran to it and shut themselves in. And they went up on the roof of the tower.

52 Y vino Abimelec a la torre, y combatiéndola, llegó a la puerta de la torre para prenderle fuego.

Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it. He went near the door of the building to burn it with fire.

53 M as una mujer dejó caer un pedazo de una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec, y le quebró el cráneo.

But a certain woman threw a grain-crushing stone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull.

54 Y luego él llamó a su escudero, y le dijo: Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: Una mujer lo mató. Y su escudero le atravesó, y murió.

Abimelech was quick to call the young man who carried his heavy battle-clothes, saying, “Take your sword and kill me. Or else it will be said that a woman killed me.” So the young man killed him with a sword.

55 Y cuando los israelitas vieron muerto a Abimelec, se fueron cada uno a su casa.

When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, each man went home.

56 A sí devolvió Dios a Abimelec el mal que hizo contra su padre matando a sus setenta hermanos.

So God punished Abimelech for the sin he had done against his father by killing his seventy brothers.

57 Y aun todo el mal de los señores de Siquem lo hizo volver Dios sobre sus cabezas; y la maldición de Jotam, hijo de Jerobaal, vino sobre ellos.

God punished the men of Shechem for all their sin. The words that Jotham the son of Jerubbaal spoke against them came true.
