1 ¶ Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel, que entraron en Egipto con Jacob; cada uno entró con su familia.

These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob. Each one came with those of his house:

2 R ubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá;

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,

3 I sacar, Zabulón y Benjamín;

Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,

4 D an y Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5 Y todas las almas de los que salieron del muslo de Jacob, fueron setenta. Y José estaba en Egipto.

There were seventy people in Jacob’s family. But Joseph was already in Egypt.

6 Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.

Joseph and all his brothers died and all their families of that time.

7 Y los hijos de Israel crecieron, y se multiplicaron, y fueron aumentados y fortalecidos en extremo; y se llenó la tierra de ellos.

But the sons of Israel had many children, and the people became many in number. There were so many that the land was filled with them.

8 ¶ Se levantó entretanto un nuevo rey sobre Egipto, que no conocía a José; el cual dijo a su pueblo:

Then a new king came into power over Egypt. He did not know Joseph.

9 H e aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es mayor y más fuerte que nosotros.

He said to his people, “See, the people of Israel are too many and too powerful for us.

10 A hora, pues, seamos sabios para con él, para que no se multiplique, y acontezca que viniendo guerra, él también se junte con nuestros enemigos, y pelee contra nosotros, y se vaya de la tierra.

Come, let us be wise in how we act towards them, or they will become more in number. If there is a war, they might join with those who hate us. They might fight against us and then leave the land.”

11 E ntonces pusieron sobre él comisarios de tributos que los molestaran con sus cargas; y edificaron al Faraón las ciudades de almacenaje: Pitón y Ramesés.

So they put men in power over them to make them work hard. And they built the store-cities Pithom and Raamses for Pharaoh the king.

12 P ero cuanto más los molestaban, tanto más se multiplicaban y crecían; tanto que ellos se fastidiaban de los hijos de Israel.

But the more the Egyptians made them suffer, the more they became until they spread throughout the land. So the Egyptians were afraid of the people of Israel.

13 Y los egipcios hicieron servir a los hijos de Israel con dureza;

The Egyptians made the people of Israel work very hard.

14 y amargaron su vida con dura servidumbre, en hacer barro y ladrillo, y en toda labor del campo, y en todo su servicio, al cual los obligaban con dureza.

They made their lives bitter with hard work building with stones and with all kinds of work in the field. They made them work very hard.

15 ¶ Y habló el rey de Egipto a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra, y otra Fúa, y les dijo:

Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew nurses. The name of one was Shiphrah. The name of the other was Puah.

16 C uando asistáis a las hebreas, y veáis el sexo, si fuere hijo, matadlo; y si fuere hija, entonces viva.

He said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth, and see the baby before the mother does, if it is a son, kill him. But if it is a daughter, let her live.”

17 M as las parteras temieron a Dios, y no hicieron como les mandó el rey de Egipto, y daban la vida a los niños.

But the nurses feared God. They did not do what the king of Egypt told them. They let the boys live.

18 Y el rey de Egipto hizo llamar a las parteras y les dijo: ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto, que habéis dado la vida a los niños?

So the king of Egypt called the nurses and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the boys live?”

19 Y las parteras respondieron al Faraón: Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias; porque son robustas, y dan a luz antes que la partera venga a ellas.

The nurses answered Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. They are strong. They give birth before the nurse comes to them.”

20 Y Dios hizo bien a las parteras; y el pueblo se multiplicó, y se fortaleció en gran manera.

So God was good to the nurses. And the people became many and strong.

21 Y las parteras por haber temido a Dios, él les hizo casas.

Because the nurses feared God, He gave them families.

22 E ntonces el Faraón mandó a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Echad en el río todo hijo que naciere, y a toda hija dad la vida.

Then Pharaoh told all his people, “Throw every son who is born to the Hebrews into the Nile. But keep every daughter alive.”
