1 W hen Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, Behold, David is in the Wilderness of En-gedi.

¶ Y cuando Saúl volvió de los filisteos, le dieron aviso diciendo: He aquí que David está en el desierto de En-gadi.

2 T hen Saul took 3, 000 chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men among the Rocks of the Wild Goats.

Y tomando Saúl tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel, fue en busca de David y de los suyos, por las cumbres de los peñascos de las cabras monteses.

3 H e came to the sheepfolds on the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the cave’s innermost recesses.

Y cuando llegó a una majada de ovejas en el camino, donde había una cueva, entró Saúl en ella a hacer sus necesidades; y David y los suyos estaban sentados a los lados de la cueva.

4 D avid’s men said to him, Behold the day of which the Lord said to you, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hands and you shall do to him as seems good to you. Then David arose and stealthily cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe.

Entonces los de David le dijeron: He aquí el día que te ha dicho el SEÑOR: He aquí que yo entrego tu enemigo en tus manos, y harás con él como te pareciere. Y se levantó David, y calladamente cortó la orilla de la ropa de Saúl.

5 A fterward, David’s heart smote him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

Después de lo cual el corazón de David le hirió, porque había cortado la orilla de la ropa de Saúl.

6 H e said to his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to put my hand out against him, when he is the anointed of the Lord.

Y dijo a los suyos: El SEÑOR me guarde de hacer tal cosa contra mi señor, el ungido del SEÑOR, que yo extienda mi mano contra él; porque es ungido del SEÑOR.

7 S o David checked his men with these words and did not let them rise against Saul. But Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.

Así quebrantó David a los suyos con palabras, y no les permitió que se levantaran contra Saúl. Y Saúl, saliendo de la cueva, se fue su camino.

8 D avid also arose afterward and went out of the cave and called after Saul, saying, My lord the king! And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth and did obeisance.

También David se levantó después, y saliendo de la cueva dio voces a las espaldas de Saúl, diciendo: ¡Mi señor el rey! Y cuando Saúl miró atrás, David inclinó su rostro a tierra, y adoró.

9 A nd David said to Saul, Why do you listen to the words of men who say, David seeks to do you harm?

¶ Y dijo David a Saúl: ¿Por qué oyes las palabras de los que dicen: Mira que David procura tu mal?

10 B ehold, your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hands in the cave. Some told me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed.

He aquí han visto hoy tus ojos cómo el SEÑOR te ha puesto hoy en mis manos en esta cueva; y dijeron que te matara, mas te perdoné, porque dije: No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor, porque ungido es del SEÑOR.

11 S ee, my father, see the skirt of your robe in my hand! Since I cut off the skirt of your robe and did not kill you, you know and see that there is no evil or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, yet you hunt my life to take it.

Y mira, padre mío, mira aún la orilla de tu ropa en mi mano; porque yo corté la orilla de tu manto, y no te maté. Conoce, pues, y ve que no hay mal ni traición en mi mano, ni he pecado contra ti; con todo, tú andas a caza de mi vida para quitármela.

12 M ay the Lord judge between me and you, and may the Lord avenge me upon you, but my hand shall not be upon you.

Juzgue el SEÑOR entre mí y ti, y véngueme de ti el SEÑOR; pero mi mano no será contra ti.

13 A s the proverb of the ancients says, Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness; but my hand shall not be against you.

Como dice el proverbio del antiguo: De los impíos saldrá la impiedad; así que mi mano no será contra ti.

14 A fter whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog? After a flea?

¿Tras quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? ¿A un perro muerto? ¿A una pulga?

15 M ay the Lord be judge and judge between me and you, and see and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hands.

El SEÑOR, pues, será juez, y él juzgará entre mí y ti. El vea, y pleitee mi pleito, y me defienda de tu mano.

16 W hen David had said this to Saul, Saul said, Is this your voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

¶ Y aconteció que, cuando David acabó de decir estas palabras a Saúl, Saúl dijo: ¿No es esta la voz tuya, hijo mío David? Y alzando Saúl su voz lloró.

17 H e said to David, You are more upright in God’s eyes than I, for you have repaid me good, but I have rewarded you evil.

Y dijo a David: Más justo eres tú que yo, que me has pagado con bien, habiéndote yo pagado con mal.

18 Y ou have declared today how you have dealt well with me; for when the Lord gave me into your hand, you did not kill me.

Tú has mostrado hoy que has hecho conmigo bien; pues no me has dado muerte, habiéndome el SEÑOR puesto en tus manos.

19 F or if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done for me this day.

Porque ¿quién hallará a su enemigo, y lo dejará ir sano y salvo? El SEÑOR te pague con bien por lo que en este día has hecho conmigo.

20 A nd now, behold, I well know that you shall surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hands.

Y ahora, como yo entiendo que tú has de reinar, y que el reino de Israel ha de ser en tu mano firme y estable,

21 S wear now therefore to me by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants after me and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.

júrame, pues, ahora por el SEÑOR, que no talarás mi simiente después de mí, ni raerás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre.

22 D avid gave Saul his oath; and Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

Entonces David juró a Saúl. Y se fue Saúl a su casa, y David y los suyos se subieron a su fuerte.
