1 N ow while Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there gathered to him out of Israel a very great assembly of men, women, and children; for the people wept bitterly.

Y orando Esdras y confesando, llorando y postrándose delante de la casa de Dios, se juntó a él una muy grande congregación de Israel, hombres, mujeres y niños; y lloraba el pueblo con gran llanto.

2 A nd Shecaniah son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra: We have broken faith and dealt treacherously against our God and have married foreign women of the peoples of the land; yet now there is still hope for Israel in spite of this thing.

Entonces respondió Secanías hijo de Jehiel, de los hijos de Elam, y dijo a Esdras: Nos hemos rebelado contra nuestro Dios, pues tomamos mujeres extranjeras de los pueblos de la tierra; mas hay aún esperanza para Israel sobre esto.

3 T herefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the foreign wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the command of our God; and let it be done according to the Law.

Por tanto ahora hagamos pacto con nuestro Dios, que echaremos todas las mujeres y los nacidos de ellas, según el consejo del Señor, y de los que temen el mandamiento de nuestro Dios; y hágase conforme a la ley.

4 A rise, for it is your duty, and we are with you. Be strong and brave and do it.

Levántate, porque a ti toca el negocio, y nosotros estaremos contigo; esfuérzate, y ponlo por obra.

5 T hen Ezra arose and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.

Entonces se levantó Esdras, y juramentó a los príncipes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, y a todo Israel, que harían conforme a esto; y ellos juraron.

6 T hen Ezra came from before the house of God and went into the lodging place of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. There he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned over the returned exiles’ faithlessness.

Se levantó luego Esdras de delante de la Casa de Dios, y se fue a la cámara de Johanán hijo de Eliasib; e ido allá, no comió pan ni bebió agua, porque se entristeció sobre la prevaricación de los de la transmigración.

7 A nd proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles, that they should assemble in Jerusalem,

E hicieron pasar pregón por Judá y por Jerusalén a todos los hijos de la transmigración, que se juntaran en Jerusalén;

8 A nd that whoever did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders, all his property should be forfeited and he himself banned from the assembly of the exiles.

y que el que no viniera dentro de tres días, conforme al acuerdo de los príncipes y de los ancianos, perdiera toda su hacienda, y él fuera apartado de la congregación de los de la transmigración.

9 T hen all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the twentieth day of the ninth month, and all the people sat in the open space before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.

Así fueron reunidos todos los varones de Judá y de Benjamín en Jerusalén dentro de tres días, a los veinte del mes, el cual era el mes noveno; y se sentó todo el pueblo en la plaza de la Casa de Dios, temblando con motivo de aquel negocio, y a causa de las lluvias.

10 A nd Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, You have acted wickedly and broken faith and have married foreign (heathen) women, increasing the guilt of Israel.

Y se levantó Esdras el sacerdote, y les dijo: Vosotros habéis prevaricado, por cuanto tomasteis mujeres extrañas, añadiendo así sobre la culpa de Israel.

11 S o now make confession and give thanks to the Lord, the God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from foreign (heathen) wives.

Ahora pues, dad confesión al SEÑOR Dios de vuestros padres, y haced su voluntad, y apartaos de los pueblos de las tierras, y de las mujeres extranjeras.

12 T hen all the assembly answered with a loud voice, As you have said, so must we do.

Y respondió toda la congregación, y dijeron en alta voz: Así se haga conforme a tu palabra.

13 B ut the people are many and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand outside. Nor can this work be done in a day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.

Mas el pueblo es mucho, y el tiempo lluvioso, y no hay fuerza para estar en la calle; ni la obra es de un día ni de dos, porque somos muchos los que hemos prevaricado en este negocio.

14 L et our officials stand for the whole assembly; let all in our cities who have foreign wives come by appointment, and with each group the elders of that city and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God over this matter is turned away from us.

Estén ahora nuestros príncipes, los de toda la congregación; y todos aquellos que en nuestras ciudades hubieren tomado mujeres extranjeras, vengan a tiempos aplazados, y con ellos los ancianos de cada ciudad, y los jueces de ellas, hasta que apartemos de nosotros el furor de la ira de nuestro Dios sobre esto.

15 O nly Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.

Fueron pues puestos sobre este negocio Jonatán hijo de Asael, y Jahazías hijo de Ticva; y Mesulam y Sabetai, levitas, les ayudaron.

16 T hen the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest and certain heads of fathers’ houses were selected, according to their fathers’ houses, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter.

E hicieron así los hijos de la transmigración. Y fueron apartados Esdras y los varones cabezas de los padres en la casa de sus padres, y todos ellos por sus nombres; y se sentaron el primer día del mes décimo para inquirir sobre el negocio.

17 A nd by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of the cases of the men married to foreign wives.

Y concluyeron, con todos aquellos que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, el primer día del mes primero.

18 O f the sons of the priests who had married non-Jewish women were found: of the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.

Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, fueron hallados éstos: De los hijos de Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y de sus hermanos: Maasías, Eliezer, Jarib, y Gedalías;

19 T hey solemnly vowed to put away their wives, and, being guilty, offered a ram of the flock for guilt.

y dieron su mano en promesa de echar sus mujeres, y ofrecieron como culpados un carnero de los rebaños por su culpa.

20 O f the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.

Y de los hijos de Imer: Hanani y Zebadías.

21 O f the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.

Y de los hijos de Harim: Maasías, Elías, Semaías, Jehiel, y Uzías.

22 O f the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

Y de los hijos de Pasur: Elioenai, Maasías, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabad, y Elasa.

23 O f the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

Y de los hijos de los levitas: Jozabad, y Simei, Kelaía (éste es Kelita), Petaías, Judá y Eliezer.

24 O f the singers: Eliashib. Of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

Y de los cantores, Eliasib; y de los porteros: Salum, Telem, y Uri.

25 A nd of Israel: of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah (Hashabiah), and Benaiah.

Asimismo de Israel, de los hijos de Paros: Ramía, Jezías, Malquías, Mijamín, Eleazar, Malquías, y Benaía.

26 O f the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah.

Y de los hijos de Elam: Matanías, Zacarías, Jehiel, Abdi, Jerimot, y Elías.

27 O f the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza.

Y de los hijos de Zatu: Elioenai, Eliasib, Matanías, Jerimot, Zabad, y Aziza.

28 O f the sons also of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.

44 A ll these had married foreign women, and some of the wives had borne children.

Todos éstos habían tomado mujeres extranjeras; y había mujeres de ellos que habían dado a luz hijos.
