1 I t was in the days of Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus who reigned from India to Ethiopia over 127 provinces.

Y aconteció en los días de Asuero (el Asuero que reinó desde la India hasta la Etiopía sobre ciento veinteisiete provincias),

2 I n those days when King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne which was in Shushan or Susa in the palace or castle,

que en aquellos días, cuando se asentó el rey Asuero sobre el trono de su reino, el cual estaba en Susa, el palacio.

3 I n the third year of his reign he made a feast for all his princes and his courtiers. The chief officers of the Persian and Median army and the nobles and governors of the provinces were there before him

en el tercer año de su reinado hizo banquete a todos sus príncipes y siervos, teniendo delante de él la fuerza de Persia y de Media, gobernadores y príncipes de provincias,

4 W hile he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendor and excellence of his majesty for many days, even 180 days.

para mostrar él las riquezas de la gloria de su reino, y la honra de la hermosura de su grandeza, por muchos días, ciento ochenta días.

5 A nd when these days were completed, the king made a feast for all the people present in Shushan the capital, both great and small, a seven-day feast in the court of the garden of the king’s palace.

Y cumplidos estos días, hizo el rey banquete por siete días en el patio del huerto del palacio real a todo el pueblo, desde el mayor hasta el menor que se halló en Susa, el palacio.

6 T here were hangings of fine white cloth, of green and of blue, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings or rods and marble pillars. The couches of gold and silver rested on a pavement of porphyry, white marble, mother-of-pearl, and colored stones.

El pabellón era de blanco, verde, y cárdeno, tendido sobre cuerdas de lino y púrpura en anillos de plata y columnas de mármol; los reclinatorios de oro y de plata, sobre losado de pórfido y de mármol, de alabastro y de cárdeno.

7 D rinks were served in different kinds of golden goblets, and there was royal wine in abundance, according to the liberality of the king.

Y daban a beber en vasos de oro (los vasos eran diferentes unos de otros), y mucho vino real, conforme a la facultad del rey.

8 A nd drinking was according to the law; no one was compelled to drink, for the king had directed all the officials of his palace to serve only as each guest desired.

Y la bebida fue según esta ley: Que nadie se constriñere; porque así lo había mandado el rey a todos los mayordomos de su casa; que se hiciere según la voluntad de cada uno.

9 A lso Queen Vashti gave a banquet for the women in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.

Asimismo la reina Vasti hizo banquete de mujeres, en la casa real del rey Asuero.

10 O n the seventh day, when the king’s heart was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who ministered to King Ahasuerus as attendants,

El séptimo día, estando el corazón del rey alegre del vino, mandó a Mehumán, Bizta, Harbona, Bigta, Abagta, Zetar, y a Carcas, siete eunucos que servían delante del rey Asuero,

11 T o bring Queen Vashti before the king, with her royal crown, to show the peoples and the princes her beauty, for she was fair to behold.

que trajeran a la reina Vasti delante del rey con la corona del reino, para mostrar a los pueblos y a los príncipes su hermosura; porque era hermosa de parecer.

12 B ut Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command conveyed by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was enraged, and his anger burned within him.

Y la reina Vasti no quiso venir a la orden del rey, enviada por mano de los eunucos; y se enojó el rey mucho, y se encendió en él su ira.

13 T hen the king spoke to the wise men who knew the times—for this was the king’s procedure toward all who were familiar with law and judgment—

Preguntó entonces el rey a los sabios que sabían los tiempos (porque así era la costumbre del rey para con todos los que sabían la ley y el derecho;

14 T hose next to him being Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media who were in the king’s presence and held first place in the kingdom.

y estaban junto a él, Carsena, Setar, Admata, Tarsis, Meres, Marsena, y Memucán, siete príncipes de Persia y de Media que veían el rostro del rey, y se sentaban los primeros en el reino):

15 A ccording to the law, what is to be done to Queen Vashti because she has not done the bidding of King Ahasuerus conveyed by the eunuchs?

¿Qué se debe hacer según la ley con la reina Vasti, por cuanto no ha cumplido la orden del rey Asuero, enviada por mano de los eunucos?

16 A nd Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen has not only done wrong to the king but also to all the princes and to all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.

Y dijo Memucán delante del rey y de los príncipes: No solamente contra el rey ha cometido iniquidad la reina Vasti, sino contra todos los príncipes, y contra todos los pueblos que hay en todas las provincias del rey Asuero.

17 F or this deed of the queen will become known to all women, making their husbands contemptible in their eyes, since they will say, King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she did not come.

Porque este hecho de la reina pasará a noticia de todas las mujeres, para hacerles tener en poca estima a sus maridos, diciendo: El rey Asuero mandó traer delante de sí a la reina Vasti, y ella no vino.

18 T his very day the ladies of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s behavior will be telling it to all the king’s princes. So contempt and wrath in plenty will arise.

Y entonces dirán esto las princesas de Persia y de Media que oyeren el hecho de la reina, a todos los príncipes del rey; y habrá mucho menosprecio y enojo.

19 I f it pleases the king, let a royal command go forth from him and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and Medes, so that it may not be changed, that Vashti is to come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she.

Si parece bien al rey, salga mandamiento real delante de él, y se escriba entre las leyes de Persia y de Media, que no sea traspasado: Que no venga más Vasti delante del rey Asuero; y dé el rey su reino a su compañera que sea mejor que ella.

20 S o when the king’s decree is made and proclaimed throughout all his kingdom, extensive as it is, all wives will give honor to their husbands, high and low.

Y la sentencia que hará el rey será oído en todo su reino, aunque es grande, y todas las mujeres darán honra a sus maridos, desde el mayor hasta el menor.

21 T his advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did what Memucan proposed.

Y agradó esta palabra en ojos del rey y de los príncipes, e hizo el rey conforme al dicho de Memucán;

22 H e sent letters to all the royal provinces, to each in its own script and to every people in their own language, saying that every man should rule in his own house and speak there in the language of his own people.

pues envió cartas a todas las provincias del rey, a cada provincia conforme a su escribir, y a cada pueblo conforme a su lenguaje, diciendo: Que todo varón sea señor en su casa; y que se publique esto en la lengua de su pueblo.
