1 O ne day Jonathan son of Saul said to his armor-bearer, Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side. But he did not tell his father.

¶ Y un día aconteció, que Jonatán hijo de Saúl dijo a su criado que le traía las armas: Ven, y pasemos a la guarnición de los filisteos, que está a aquel lado. Y no lo hizo saber a su padre.

2 S aul was remaining in the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron; and with him were about 600 men,

Y Saúl estaba en el término de Gabaa, debajo de un granado que hay en Migrón, y el pueblo que estaba con él era como seiscientos hombres.

3 A nd Ahijah son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord’s priest in Shiloh, was wearing the ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan was gone.

Y Ahías hijo de Ahitob, hermano de Icabod, hijo de Finees, hijo de Elí, sacerdote del SEÑOR en Silo, llevaba el efod; y no sabía el pueblo que Jonatán se hubiera ido.

4 B etween the passes by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistine garrison there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side; one was named Bozez, and the other Seneh.

Y entre los pasos por donde Jonatán procuraba pasar a la guarnición de los filisteos, había un peñasco agudo de un lado, y otro del otro lado; el uno se llamaba Boses y el otro Sene.

5 T he one crag rose on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.

Un peñasco estaba situado al norte hacia Micmas, y el otro al mediodía hacia Gabaa.

6 A nd Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For there is nothing to prevent the Lord from saving by many or by few.

Dijo, pues, Jonatán a su criado que le traía las armas: Ven, pasemos a la guarnición de estos incircuncisos; por ventura obre el SEÑOR por nosotros; que no es difícil para el SEÑOR salvar con multitud o con poco número.

7 A nd his armor-bearer said to him, Do all that is in your mind; I am with you in whatever you think.

Y su paje de armas le respondió: Haz todo lo que tienes en tu corazón; ve, que aquí estoy contigo a tu voluntad.

8 J onathan said, We will pass over to these men and we will let them see us.

Y Jonatán dijo: He aquí, nosotros pasaremos a estos hombres, y nos mostraremos a ellos.

9 I f they say to us, Wait until we come to you, then we will stand still in our place and will not go up to them.

Si nos dijeren así: Esperad hasta que lleguemos a vosotros; entonces nos estaremos en nuestro lugar, y no subiremos a ellos.

10 B ut if they say, Come up to us, we will go up, for the Lord has delivered them into our hand, and this will be our sign.

Mas si nos dijeren así: Subid a nosotros; entonces subiremos, porque el SEÑOR los ha entregado en nuestras manos; y esto nos será por señal.

11 S o both of them let the Philistine garrison see them. And the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.

Se mostraron, pues, ambos a la guarnición de los filisteos, y los filisteos dijeron: He aquí los hebreos, que salen de las cavernas en que se habían escondido.

12 T he garrison men said to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, Come up to us and we will show you a thing. Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, Come up after me, for the Lord has given them into Israel’s hand.

Y los varones de la guarnición respondieron a Jonatán y a su paje de armas, y dijeron: Subid a nosotros, y os haremos saber una cosa. Entonces Jonatán dijo a su paje de armas: Sube tras mí, que el SEÑOR los ha entregado en la mano de Israel.

13 T hen Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, his armor-bearer after him; and the enemy fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him.

Y subió Jonatán trepando con sus manos y sus pies, y tras él su paje de armas; y a los que caían delante de Jonatán, su paje de armas que iba tras él, los mataba.

14 A nd that first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made was about twenty men within about a half acre of land.

Esta fue la primera matanza, en la cual Jonatán con su paje de armas, mató como unos veinte varones, como en la mitad de una yugada que un par de bueyes suelen arar en un campo.

15 A nd there was trembling and panic in the camp, in the field, and among all the men; the garrison, and even the raiders trembled; the earth quaked, and it became a terror from God.

Y hubo miedo en el real y por la tierra, y por todo el pueblo de la guarnición; y los que habían ido a destruir la tierra, también ellos temblaron, y la tierra fue alborotada, y hubo miedo de Dios.

16 S aul’s watchmen in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude melted away and went hither and thither.

¶ Y los centinelas de Saúl vieron desde Gabaa de Benjamín cómo la multitud estaba deshecha y daban el uno al otro.

17 T hen Saul said to the men with him, Number and see who is gone from us. When they numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were missing.

Entonces Saúl dijo al pueblo que tenía consigo: Pasad revista, y mirad quién haya ido de los nuestros. Y cuando pasaron revista, hallaron que faltaban Jonatán y su paje de armas.

18 S aul said to Ahijah, Bring here the ark of God—for at that time the ark of God was with the children of Israel.

Y Saúl dijo a Ahías: Trae el arca de Dios. Porque el arca de Dios estaba entonces con los hijos de Israel.

19 W hile Saul talked to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp kept increasing. Then Saul said to the priest, Withdraw your hand.

Y aconteció que estando aún hablando Saúl con el sacerdote, el alboroto que había en el campamento de los filisteos se aumentaba, e iba creciendo en gran manera. Entonces dijo Saúl al sacerdote: Detén tu mano.

20 T hen Saul and all the people with him rallied and went into the battle, and behold, every sword was against his fellow in wild confusion.

Y juntando Saúl todo el pueblo que con él estaba, vinieron hasta el lugar de la batalla; y he aquí que la espada de cada uno era vuelta contra su compañero, y la mortandad era grande.

21 M oreover, the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before that time, who went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

Y los hebreos que habían estado con los filisteos de ayer y anteayer, y habían venido con ellos de los alrededores al campamento, también éstos se volvieron del lado de los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y con Jonatán.

22 L ikewise, all the men of Israel who had hid themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, they also went after them in hot pursuit in the battle.

Asimismo todos los israelitas que se habían escondido en el monte de Efraín, oyendo que los filisteos huían, ellos también los persiguieron en aquella batalla.

23 S o the Lord delivered Israel that day, and the battle passed beyond Beth-aven.

Así salvó el SEÑOR a Israel aquel día. Y llegó el alcance hasta Bet-avén.

24 B ut the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had caused them to take an oath, saying, Cursed be the man who eats any food before evening and until I have taken vengeance on my enemies. So none of the men tasted any food.

¶ Pero los varones de Israel fueron puestos en apuro aquel día; porque Saúl había conjurado al pueblo, diciendo: Cualquiera que comiere pan hasta la tarde, hasta que haya tomado venganza de mis enemigos, sea maldito. Y todo el pueblo no había gustado pan.

25 A nd all the people of the land came to a wood, and there was honey on the ground.

Y aquel ejército de toda la tierra llegó a un bosque, donde había miel en la superficie del campo.

26 W hen the men entered the wood, behold, the honey was dripping, but no man tasted it, for the men feared the oath.

Entró, pues, el pueblo en el bosque, y he aquí que la miel corría; mas ninguno hubo que llegara la mano a su boca; porque el pueblo temía el juramento.

27 B ut Jonathan had not heard when his father charged the people with the oath. So he dipped the end of the rod in his hand into a honeycomb and put it to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.

Pero Jonatán no había oído cuando su padre conjuró al pueblo, y extendió la punta de una vara que traía en su mano, y la mojó en un panal de miel, y llevó su mano a su boca; y sus ojos fueron aclarados.

28 T hen one of the men told him, Your father strictly charged the men with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man who eats any food today. And the people were exhausted and faint.

Entonces habló uno del pueblo, diciendo: Tu padre ha conjurado expresamente al pueblo, diciendo: Maldito sea el varón que comiere hoy alimento. Y el pueblo desfallecía de hambre.

29 T hen Jonathan said, My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

Y respondió Jonatán: Mi padre ha turbado la tierra. Ved ahora cómo han sido aclarados mis ojos, por haber gustado un poco de esta miel.

30 H ow much better if the men had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found! For now the slaughter of the Philistines has not been great.

¿Cuánto más si el pueblo hubiera hoy comido del despojo de sus enemigos que halló? ¿No se habría hecho ahora mayor estrago en los filisteos?

31 T hey smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very faint.

E hirieron aquel día a los filisteos desde Micmas hasta Ajalón; mas el pueblo se cansó mucho.

32 t he men flew upon the spoil. They took sheep, oxen, and calves, slew them on the ground, and ate them with the blood.

Se lanzó, por tanto, el pueblo al despojo, y tomaron ovejas y vacas y becerros, y los mataron en tierra, y el pueblo comió con sangre.

33 T hen Saul was told, Behold, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating with the blood. And he said, You have transgressed; roll a great stone to me here.

Y dieron aviso de ello a Saúl, diciendo: El pueblo peca contra el SEÑOR comiendo con sangre. Y él dijo: Vosotros habéis prevaricado; rodadme ahora acá una gran piedra.

34 S aul said, Disperse yourselves among the people and tell them, Bring me every man his ox or his sheep, and butcher them here and eat; and sin not against the Lord by eating the blood. So all the men brought each one his ox that night and butchered it there.

Y Saúl volvió a decir: Esparcíos por el pueblo, y decidles que me traigan cada uno su vaca, y cada cual su oveja, y degolladlos aquí, y comed; y no pecaréis contra el SEÑOR comiendo con sangre. Y trajo todo el pueblo cada cual por su mano su vaca aquella noche, y las degollaron allí.

35 A nd Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first altar he built to the Lord.

Y edificó Saúl altar al SEÑOR, este altar fue el primero que edificó al SEÑOR.

36 T hen Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night and seize and plunder them until daylight, and let us not leave a man of them. They said, Do whatever seems good to you. Then the priest said, Let us draw near here to God.

¶ Y dijo Saúl: Descendamos de noche contra los filisteos, y los saquearemos hasta la mañana, y no dejaremos de ellos ninguno. Y ellos dijeron: Haz lo que bien te pareciere. Dijo luego el sacerdote: Acerquémonos aquí a Dios.

37 A nd Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You deliver them into the hand of Israel? But He did not answer him that day.

Y Saúl consultó a Dios: ¿Descenderé tras los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en mano de Israel? Mas el SEÑOR no le dio respuesta aquel día.

38 T hen Saul said, Draw near, all the chiefs of the people, and let us see how this sin arose today.

Entonces dijo Saúl: Llegaos acá todos los principales del pueblo; y sabed y mirad por quién ha sido hoy este pecado;

39 F or as the Lord lives, Who delivers Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But not a man among all the people answered him.

porque vive el SEÑOR, que salva a Israel, que si fuere en mi hijo Jonatán, el morirá de cierto. Y no hubo en todo el pueblo quien le respondiera.

40 T hen he said to all Israel, You be on one side; and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. The people said to Saul, Do what seems good to you.

Dijo luego a todo Israel: Vosotros estaréis a un lado, y yo y Jonatán mi hijo estaremos al otro lado. Y el pueblo respondió a Saúl: Haz lo que bien te pareciere.

41 T herefore Saul said to the Lord, the God of Israel, Give a perfect lot and show the right. And Saul and Jonathan were taken, but the other men went free.

Entonces dijo Saúl al SEÑOR Dios de Israel: Muestra quien está sin mancha. Y fueron tomados Jonatán y Saúl, y el pueblo salió libre.

42 S aul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

Y Saúl dijo: Echad suerte entre mí y Jonatán mi hijo. Y fue tomado Jonatán.

43 S aul said to Jonathan, Tell me what you have done. And Jonathan said, I tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. And behold, I must die.

Entonces Saúl dijo a Jonatán: Declárame qué has hecho. Y Jonatán se lo declaró, y dijo: Cierto que gusté con la punta de la vara que traía en mi mano, un poco de miel; ¿he de morir por eso?

44 S aul answered, May God do so, and more also, for you shall surely die, Jonathan.

Y Saúl respondió: Así me haga Dios y así me añada, que sin duda morirás, Jonatán.

45 B ut the people said to Saul, Shall Jonathan, who has wrought this great deliverance to Israel, die? God forbid! As the Lord lives, there shall not one hair of his head perish, for he has wrought this great deliverance with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.

Entonces el pueblo dijo a Saúl: ¿Ha pues de morir Jonatán, el que ha hecho esta salud grande en Israel? No será así. Vive el SEÑOR, que no ha de caer un cabello de su cabeza en tierra, pues que ha obrado hoy con Dios. Así rescató el pueblo a Jonatán, para que no muriera.

46 T hen Saul ceased pursuing the Philistines, and they went to their own place.

Y Saúl dejó de seguir a los filisteos; y los filisteos se fueron a su lugar.

47 W hen Saul took over the kingdom of Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he made it worse for them.

¶ Y tomando Saúl el reino sobre Israel, hizo guerra a todos sus enemigos alrededor: contra Moab, contra los hijos de Amón, contra Edom, contra los reyes de Soba, y contra los filisteos; y adondequiera que se volvía, los atribuló.

48 H e did valiantly and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.

Y reunió un ejército, e hirió a Amalec, y libró a Israel de mano de los que le saqueaban.

49 N ow Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchi-shua; and the names of his two daughters were, of the firstborn, Merab; and of the younger, Michal.

Y los hijos de Saúl fueron Jonatán, Isúi, y Malquisúa. Y los nombres de sus dos hijas eran, el nombre de la mayor, Merab, y el de la menor, Mical.

50 T he name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The commander of his army was Abner son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

Y el nombre de la mujer de Saúl era Ahinoam, hija de Ahimaas. Y el nombre del general de su ejército era Abner, hijo de Ner tío de Saúl.

51 K ish the father of Saul and Ner the father of Abner were sons of Abiel.

Porque Cis padre de Saúl, y Ner padre de Abner, fueron hijos de Abiel.

52 T here was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul, and whenever Saul saw any mighty or courageous man, he attached him to himself.

Y la guerra fue fuerte contra los filisteos todo el tiempo de Saúl; y a cualquiera que Saúl veía que era hombre valiente e hijo de virtud, le juntaba consigo.
