1 Y sucedió que en el año cuarto del rey Darío vino la palabra del Señor a Zacarías el cuarto día del mes noveno, Quisleu.

In the fourth year of king Darius, Yahweh’s word came to Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Chislev.

2 L a aldea de Betel había enviado a Sarezer, a Regem-melec y a sus hombres a implorar el favor del Señor,

The people of Bethel sent Sharezer and Regem Melech, and their men, to entreat Yahweh’s favor,

3 y a hablar a los sacerdotes que eran de la casa del Señor de los ejércitos, y a los profetas, diciendo: ¿Debemos llorar en el mes quinto y abstenernos como lo hemos hecho durante tantos años?

and to speak to the priests of the house of Yahweh of Armies, and to the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?”

4 E ntonces vino a mí la palabra del Señor de los ejércitos, diciendo:

Then the word of Yahweh of Armies came to me, saying,

5 H abla a todo el pueblo de la tierra y a los sacerdotes, y di: “Cuando ayunabais y os lamentabais en el quinto y el séptimo mes durante estos setenta años, ¿ayunabais en verdad por mí ?

“Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month for these seventy years, did you at all fast to me, really to me?

6 “ Y cuando coméis y bebéis, ¿no coméis y bebéis para vosotros mismos?

When you eat, and when you drink, don’t you eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

7 “ ¿No son estas las palabras que el Señor proclamó por medio de los antiguos profetas, cuando Jerusalén estaba habitada y próspera con sus ciudades a su alrededor, y el Neguev y la tierra baja estaban habitados?”

Aren’t these the words which Yahweh proclaimed by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and its cities around her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?’”

8 E ntonces vino la palabra del Señor a Zacarías, diciendo:

Yahweh’s word came to Zechariah, saying,

9 A sí ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos: Juicio verdadero juzgad, y misericordia y compasión practicad cada uno con su hermano.

“Thus has Yahweh of Armies spoken, saying, ‘Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother.

10 “ No oprimáis a la viuda, al huérfano, al extranjero ni al pobre, ni traméis el mal en vuestros corazones unos contra otros.”

Don’t oppress the widow, nor the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.’

11 P ero ellos rehusaron escuchar y volvieron la espalda rebelde y se taparon los oídos para no oír.

But they refused to listen, and turned their backs, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear.

12 Y endurecieron sus corazones como el diamante para no oír la ley ni las palabras que el Señor de los ejércitos había enviado por su Espíritu, por medio de los antiguos profetas; vino, pues, gran enojo de parte del Señor de los ejércitos.

Yes, they made their hearts as hard as flint, lest they might hear the law, and the words which Yahweh of Armies had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from Yahweh of Armies.

13 Y sucedió que, como yo había clamado y ellos no habían querido escuchar, así ellos clamaron y yo no quise escuchar —dice el Señor de los ejércitos—

It has come to pass that, as he called, and they refused to listen, so they will call, and I will not listen,” said Yahweh of Armies;

14 s ino que los dispersé en torbellino entre todas las naciones que no conocían. Y la tierra fue desolada tras ellos, sin que nadie fuera ni viniera; convirtieron la tierra deseable en desolación.

“but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they made the pleasant land desolate.”
