1 N ow the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter to the Benjaminites as wife.

І присягнув Ізраїльтянин в Міцпі, говорячи: Жоден із нас не дасть своєї дочки Веніяминові за жінку!

2 A nd the people came to Bethel, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly,

І посходився народ до Бет-Елу, та й сидів там аж до вечора перед Божим лицем. І піднесли вони голос свій, та й плакали плачем великим.

3 a nd said, Jehovah, God of Israel, why is it come to pass in Israel, that there should be this day one tribe lacking in Israel?

І сказали вони: Чому, Господи, Боже Ізраїлів, сталося це між Ізраїлем, щоб сьогодні бракувало з Ізраїля одне плем'я?

4 A nd it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered up burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.

І сталося назавтра, і встав рано народ, та й збудували жертівника, і принесли цілопалення та мирні жертви.

5 A nd the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation to Jehovah? For they had a great oath concerning him that came not up to Jehovah to Mizpah, saying, He shall certainly be put to death.

І сказали Ізраїлеві сини: Хто зо всіх Ізраїлевих племен не ввійшов до зборів до Господа? Бо та присяга була велика на того, хто не прийшов до Господа, до Міцпи, говорячи: Такий буде конче забитий.

6 A nd the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, To-day is one tribe extirpated from Israel.

І жалували Ізраїлеві сини за Веніямином, своїм братом, та й сказали: Сьогодні відрубане з Ізраїля одне плем'я!

7 W hat shall we do for wives for them that remain? since we have sworn by Jehovah that we will not give them of our daughters for wives.

Що ми зробимо їм, позосталим, щодо жінок? А ми присягнули Господом, що не дамо їм із дочок наших за жінок.

8 A nd they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpah to Jehovah? And behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-Gilead, to the congregation;

І сказали вони: Яке одне з Ізраїлевих племен не прийшло до Господа до Міцпи? Аж ось виявилось, що з Явешу ґілеадського ніхто не приходив до табору на збори.

9 f or the people were numbered, and behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead there.

І був переглянений народ, а оце не було там нікого з мешканців Явешу ґілеадського!

10 A nd the assembly sent thither twelve thousand men of the most valiant and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead with the edge of the sword, and the women and the children.

І послала громада туди дванадцять тисяч чоловіка хоробрих людей, і наказали їм, говорячи: Ідіть, і повбиваєте мешканців ґілеадського Явешу вістрям меча, і жінок і дітей.

11 A nd this is the thing which ye shall do: ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain with man.

А це та річ, що ви зробите: Кожного чоловіка та кожну жінку, що пізнала чоловіка, зробите закляттям.

12 A nd they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead four hundred young women that were virgins, who had known no man by lying with any male, and they brought them to the camp, to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

І знайшли вони з мешканців ґілеадського Явешу чотири сотні дівчат паннів, що не пізнали чоловіка, і спровадили їх до табору в Шіло, що в ханаанському Краї.

13 A nd the whole assembly sent to speak to the children of Benjamin that were at the cliff of Rimmon, and to proclaim peace to them.

І послала вся та громада, а ті говорили до Веніяминових синів, що в Села-Ріммоні, та й кликнули їм: Мир!

14 A nd Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them the wives whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead; but even so they found not enough for them.

І вернувся Веніямин того часу, і дали їм тих жінок, яких позоставили при житті, із жінок ґілеадського Явешу. Та не знайшли їм досить.

15 A nd the people repented them for Benjamin, because Jehovah had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

А народ той жалував за Веніямином, бо Господь зробив пролома в Ізраїлевих племенах.

16 A nd the elders of the assembly said, What shall we do for wives for them that remain? for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin.

І сказали старші громади: Що ми зробимо позосталим щодо жінок? Бо вигублена жінка з Веніямина.

17 A nd they said, There must be a possession for those of Benjamin that have escaped, that a tribe be not blotted out of Israel.

І сказали вони: Останки насліддя для Веніямина, і не буде витерте плем'я з Ізраїля.

18 B ut we cannot give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to the Benjaminites!

А ми не можемо дати їм жінок із наших дочок, бо Ізраїлеві сини присягли, говорячи: Проклятий, хто дає жінку Веніяминові!

19 A nd they said, Behold, there is a feast of Jehovah from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north side of Bethel, toward the sun-rising of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

І сказали вони: Ось буває рік-у-рік свято Господнє в Шіло, що на північ від Бет-Елу, на схід сонця від дороги, що провадить з Бет-Елу до Сихему, і з півдня від Левони.

20 A nd they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;

І наказали вони Веніяминовим синам, говорячи: Ідіть, і будете чатувати в виноградниках.

21 a nd see, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

І побачите, аж ось дочки Шіла вийдуть танцювати танці, то ви вийдете з виноградників, та й схопите собі кожен свою жінку з дочок Шіла, і підете в Веніяминів край.

22 A nd it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to complain to us, that we will say to them, Gratify us with them, because we did not take each man his wife in the war; for ye did not give them to them, that ye should now be guilty.

І буде, коли їхні батьки або їхні брати прийдуть до нас сваритися, то ми скажемо їм: Змилуйтеся над ними, бо не взяли ми для кожного з них жінку на війні, і ви не дали їж, тому цього часу ви винні.

23 A nd the children of Benjamin did so, and took wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught; and they went and returned to their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.

І зробили так Веніяминові сини, і взяли жінок за числом своїм із тих, що танцювали, що їх вони викрали. І пішли вони, і вернулися до наділу свого, і побудували міста, та й осілися в них.

24 A nd the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

І порозходилися звідти Ізраїлеві сини того часу кожен до племени свого та до роду свого, і пішли звідти кожен до спадку свого.

25 I n those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.

Того часу не було царя в Ізраїлі, кожен робив, що здавалося правдивим в його очах!
