1 A nd the whole assembly lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

І зняла зойк уся та громада, та й заголосила. І плакав народ той тієї ночі.

2 A nd all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole assembly said to them, Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or in this wilderness would that we had died!

І нарікали на Мойсея та на Аарона всі Ізраїлеві сини. І сказала до них вся громада: О, якби ми померли були в єгипетськім краї, або щоб ми померли були в цій пустині!

3 A nd why is Jehovah bringing us to this land that we may fall by the sword, that our wives and our little ones may become a prey? Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?

І нащо Господь провадить нас до того Краю, щоб нам попадати від меча? Жінки наші та діти наші стануть здобиччю... Чи не краще нам вернутися до Єгипту?

4 A nd they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return to Egypt.

І сказали вони один до одного: Оберімо собі голову, та й вертаймось до Єгипту!

5 T hen Moses and Aaron fell upon their faces before the whole congregation of the assembly of the children of Israel.

І впали Мойсей та Аарон на обличчя свої перед усім збором громади Ізраїлевих синів.

6 A nd Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of them that searched out the land, rent their garments.

А Ісус, син Навинів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, із тих, що розвідували той Край, пороздирали одежу свою,

7 A nd they spoke to the whole assembly of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it out, is a very, very good land.

та й сказали до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, говорячи: Той Край, що перейшли ми по ньому, щоб розвідати його, Край той дуже-дуже хороший!

8 I f Jehovah delight in us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us, a land that flows with milk and honey;

Якщо Господь уподобає Собі нас, то впровадить нас до того Краю, і дасть його нам, Край, який тече молоком та медом.

9 o nly rebel not against Jehovah; and fear not the people of the land; for they shall be our food. Their defence is departed from them, and Jehovah is with us: fear them not.

Тільки не бунтуйтесь проти Господа, і не бійтеся народу того Краю, бо вони хліб для нас! Їхня тінь відійшла від них, а з нами Господь, не бійтеся їх!

10 A nd the whole assembly said that they should be stoned with stones. And the glory of Jehovah appeared in the tent of meeting to all the children of Israel.

І сказала була вся громада, щоб камінням закидати їх, та слава Господня появилася в скинії заповіту всім Ізраїлевим синам...

11 A nd Jehovah said to Moses, How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them?

І промовив Господь до Мойсея: Аж доки буде цей народ зневажати Мене, і аж доки не будуть вони вірувати в Мене, у всі ті ознаки, що Я учинив був серед нього?

12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.

Ударю його поразою, і позбавлю його насліддя, а тебе зроблю народом більшим і сильнішим від нього.

13 A nd Moses said to Jehovah, Then the Egyptians will hear it; for in thy might thou broughtest up this people from the midst of them;

І сказав Мойсей до Господа: І почує Єгипет, що Ти з-посеред нього вивів Своєю силою народ цей,

14 a nd they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land, have heard that thou, Jehovah, art in the midst of this people, that thou, Jehovah, lettest thyself be seen eye to eye, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night;

та й скаже до мешканців цього Краю, які чули, що Ти Господь серед цього народу, що око-в-око являєшся Ти, Господи, а хмара Твоя стоїть над ними, і що Ти ходиш перед ними в стовпі хмари вдень, а в стовпі огню вночі,

15 i f thou now slayest this people as one man, then the nations that have heard thy fame will speak, saying,

якщо заб'єш Ти цей народ, як одну людину, то скажуть ті люди, що чули слух про Тебе, говорячи:

16 B ecause Jehovah was not able to bring this people into the land that he had sworn unto them, he has therefore slain them in the wilderness.

Через неспроможність Господа впровадити той народ до Краю, якого Він заприсяг був їм, вигубив їх у пустині...

17 A nd now, I beseech thee, let the power of the Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,

А тепер нехай же звеличиться сила Господня, як Ти наказав був, говорячи:

18 J ehovah is slow to anger, and abundant in goodness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and fourth.

Господь довготерпеливий, і багатомилостивий, Він прощає провину та переступ, і не очистить винного, а карає провину батьків на третіх і на четвертих поколіннях.

19 P ardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy loving-kindness, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

Прости ж провину цього народу через велику милість Свою, як прощав Ти цьому народові від Єгипту й аж сюди!

20 A nd Jehovah said, I have pardoned according to thy word.

А Господь сказав: Я простив за словом твоїм.

21 B ut as surely as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Jehovah!

Але, як Я живий, слава Господня наповнить увесь оцей Край.

22 f or all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice,

Тому всі ті люди, що бачили славу Мою та ознаки Мої, що чинив Я в Єгипті та в пустині, але випробовували Мене оце десять раз та не слухалися голосу Мого,

23 s hall in no wise see the land which I did swear unto their fathers: none of them that despised me shall see it.

поправді кажу, не побачать вони того Краю, що Я заприсяг був їхнім батькам. І всі, хто зневажає Мене, не побачать його!

24 B ut my servant Caleb, because he hath another spirit in him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he came; and his seed shall possess it.

Але раб Мій Калев за те, що з ним був дух інший, і він виконував накази Мої, то Я введу його до того Краю, куди він увійшов був, і потомство його оволодіє ним.

25 ( Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley.) To-morrow turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness, on the way to the Red sea.

А амаликитянин та ханаанеянин сидить у долині. Узавтра оберніться, та й рушайте на пустиню дорогою Червоного моря!

26 A nd Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

І Господь промовляв до Мойсея й до Аарона, говорячи:

27 H ow long with this evil assembly, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

Аж доки цій злій громаді нарікати на Мене? Нарікання Ізраїлевих синів, що вони нарікають на Мене, Я чув.

28 S ay unto them, As surely as I live, saith Jehovah, if I do not do unto you as ye have spoken in mine ears!

Скажи їм: Живий Я! Мова Господня: Поправді кажу, як ви говорили до ушей Моїх, так Я зроблю вам.

29 I n this wilderness shall your carcases fall; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number from twenty years old and upwards, who have murmured against me,

У цій пустині попадають ваші трупи, та всі перелічені ваші всім вашим числом від віку двадцяти літ і вище, що нарікали на Мене.

30 s hall in no wise come into the land, concerning which I have lifted up my hand to make you dwell in it; save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Поправді кажу, ви не ввійдете до того Краю, що Я підносив був на присягу руку Свою, що будете перебувати в нім, окрім Калева, сина Єфуннеєвого, та Ісуса, сина Навинового.

31 B ut your little ones, of whom ye said they should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land that ye have despised.

А діти ваші, що про них казали ви: станете здобиччю ворогові, то впроваджу Я їх, і пізнають вони цей Край, яким ви обридили.

32 A nd as to you, your carcases shall fall in this wilderness.

І ваші власні трупи попадають у цій пустині!

33 A nd your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.

А ваші сини будуть блукати на пустині сорок літ, і відповідатимуть за зраду вашу, аж поки вигинуть ваші трупи на пустині.

34 A fter the number of the days in which ye have searched out the land, forty days, each day for a year shall ye bear your iniquities forty years, and ye shall know mine estrangement.

Числом тих днів, що розвідували ви той Край, сорок день, будете ви нести ваші гріхи по року за день сорок літ, і пізнаєте, що значить бути покинутими Мною!

35 I Jehovah have spoken; I will surely do it unto all this evil assembly which have gathered together against me! in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

Я, Господь, говорив: Поправді кажу, оце зроблю всій цій злій громаді, що змовляється проти Мене: у цій пустині вигинуть, і тут повмирають.

36 A nd the men whom Moses had sent to search out the land, who returned, and made the whole assembly to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report upon the land,

А ті люди, яких Мойсей послав був розвідати той Край, коли вернулися, то зробили, що вся громада нарікала на нього, і пустили злу вістку на той Край,

37 e ven those men who had brought up an evil report upon the land, died by a plague before Jehovah.

то ті люди, що пустили були злу вістку на той Край, повмирали від порази перед Господнім лицем.

38 B ut Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, lived still of the men that had gone to search out the land.

А Ісус, син Навинів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, жили з тих людей, що ходили розвідати той Край.

39 A nd Moses told all these sayings to all the children of Israel; then the people mourned greatly.

І говорив Мойсей ці слова до всіх Ізраїлевих синів, і народ був у тяжкій жалобі!

40 A nd they rose up early in the morning, and went up to the hill-top, saying, Here are we, and we will go up to the place of which Jehovah has spoken; for we have sinned.

І повставали вони рано вранці, та й повиходили на верхів'я гори, говорячи: Ось ми, і ми підемо до місця, що Господь був сказав, бо ми прогрішили.

41 A nd Moses said, Why now do ye transgress the commandment of Jehovah? but it shall not prosper!

А Мойсей сказав: Чому ж ви переступаєте наказ Господній? Таж це не вдасться!

42 G o not up, for Jehovah is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies;

Не виходьте, бо Господь не серед вас, а то будете побиті своїми ворогами.

43 f or the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; for as ye have turned away from Jehovah, Jehovah will not be with you.

Бо там перед вами амаликитянин і ханаанеянин, і ви попадаєте від меча, бо ви відвернулися від Господа, і не буде Господь із вами.

44 Y et they presumed to go up to the hill-top; but the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and Moses, did not depart from the midst of the camp.

Але вони осмілилися вийти на верхів'я гори, а ковчег свідоцтва Господнього та Мойсей не рушилися з-посеред табору.

45 A nd the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt on that hill, came down and smote them, and cut them to pieces, as far as Hormah.

І зійшов амаликитянин та ханаанеянин, що сидить на тій горі, та й побили їх, і били їх аж до Хорми.
